Dreams Take Flight (TM)- A trip of a lifetime to Disney World for Special Young Children
The Dream's Take Flight (TM) organization holds a one day trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland, California for physically, mentally challenged and underprivileged young boys and girls. The children are between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, all of whom would never have the opportunity to take such an excursion due to medical or financial reasons. The project was initiated by a group of Air Canada employees in 1989. To date, the Dreams take flight (TM) organization has transported over 16000 children on this special one day Disney adventure. There are a total of 8 Canadian as well as 2 U.S cities, Los Angeles and Tampa, that participate in the program. This day wouldn't be possible without the countless volunteers, mainly active and retired employees of Air Canada, who donate their time throughout the year raising funds from activities such as bake sales, bazaars, charity golf tournaments, sale of merchandise, and other events. The organization also receives corporate and private donations as well as other sponsorships. The 2011 Dreams Take Flight (TM), Quebec Chapter, is scheduled to take place on November 2nd.
Dreams Take Flight- The Selection Process
Hundreds of applications received yearly for the Dreams Take Flight event
The children who are selected to attend this special Disney Dream adventure are screened by the trip organizers. They must be physically able to endure this strenuous activity but financially unable to experience such a venture. Many of the children that are chosen have physical or mental disabilities, some are confined to a wheelchair, others have illnesses such as Crohn's Disease, Downs Syndrome or Diabetes. "The challenges that organizers confront during the trip pale in comparison to the everyday feats these children face" says one doctor has been accompanying the group for the past 20 years.

The Disney Dreams Take Flight Itinerary- A 20 hour Excursion
Dreams Take Flight Begins at Dawn
The day begins at midnight when tireless volunteers work throughout the night decorating the airplane hangar in the Disney theme, to welcome the young travellers. The children arrive around 5am, a bit sleepy but raring to go.They are greeted by several volunteers, disguised as Disney characters, as well as the trip organizers, dancers and musicians. The party begins early to get the momentum going. It is quite an experience to witness the excitement on each childs face as they prepare to embark on their one day journey, one that they never imagined possible. A Boeing 767-200 donated by Air Canada, awaits over 150 eager guests to carry them on a 3 hour flight to the most magical place on earth. The volunteers who will be taking the flight are made up of airline employees as well as doctors who are on board to make sure that all the children's special needs are taken care of during the day.

We're Here! Dreams Take Flight Arrives in Orlando!
The Beginning of a Memorable Day in the Magic Kingdom Theme Park
The flight leaves around 7 am. Upon arrival in Orlando, chartered busses transport the children and volunteers to Disney World. The groups split up and go off exploring all the exciting things that Disney has to offer such as going on the rides, getting the Disney characters autographs, taking in a show or two or just walking around Main street.

The day ends with the Magical Parade and of course the fireworks. All the children are given money to buy a souvenir right before meeting up with the rest of the group in the late evening to prepare for their return home. The airplane touches down around midnight with over 150 exhausted but exhilarated passengers aboard as they return home with many unforgettable memories.
Travelling to a Disney Theme Park
Is taking a Disney World trip your Dream?
Disney is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the world, because of the fun and excitement it brings to children and adults alike. Each year millions of families flock to the theme parks hoping to catch a glimpse of Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Goofy or other Disney characters. Some people enjoy it so much that they return several times. My family and I have been fortunate enough to have visited both Disney World and Disneyland and hope one day to visit some of the other Disney theme parks in Europe and the Far East.

Disney Dream Flight Memories from the Children
Letters from parents and children who have taken the flight
The Dreams Take Flight (TM) organization has received many thank you letters over the years from the children and their families who took part in the Disney trip. Here are a few excerpts:
" Thank you so much for taking me to Walt Disney World and taking such good care of me. I had the best time of my life. It has been a dream come true"
"I have spent my career looking after children with special needs. The resilience of these little angels continually astounds me as their hope and openness often times surfaces during great moments of heartache and difficulty. Your organization rewards these little angels for their strength and endurance for pain. The background of Disney World makes for great pictures, however, I suspect that the most indelible memories many children will hold close to their heart is the focused time and pure unconditional love offered to them for a day"
" Thank you so much for giving my son the opportunity to travel to Disney World. The memories of that day will stay with him forever."

Agreed with binzy. Disney can work out the logistics and criteria. Can't be that hard.

Of course! Disney should be the happiest place on earth, especially for kids. The travel organizers should get smart when setting up criteria for the underprivileged.

LindaJM says:
No, not entirely free, but it would be great if they would work with NPOs to help children in need, and lower prices for a group like this would be a great way to start!

Disney Parks is a business. Even if they offered special discounts, who would set the criteria for who got them and how would they ensure all were fairly treated? I'm glad we have non-profit agencies that help kids like this. I wish my son could have had this experience when he was small.

I agree with Ohme - Disney is a business -- but it is a great way for the non-profits to provide a beautiful treat for a child!

Not sure if free is the answer. But I think overall the price of the theme park should be more reasonably priced.
