DISNEY FANTASY CHRISTENING

March 1, 2012

The Disney Fantasy was officially christened as the newest member of the Disney Cruise Line fleet. In a ceremony held inside the Fantasy on March 1, 2012 as she was docked in New York, Disney executives, employees and celebrities gathered in the Fantasy's three-story tall atrium. Mariah Carey, a New York native, was named godmother of the grand ship and her husband, Nick Cannon helped Minnie Mouse break a ceremonial bottle of champagne on the Fantasy's hull.

The ceremony was preceded by a show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris in the Fantasy's Walt Disney Theater. He was joined by Jerry Seinfeld and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Disney Fantasy Deck Plans

Updated for 2012/2013

Disney Fantasy at Night by freimut on Flickr

Disney Fantasy at Night courtesy of freimut through Creative Commons.

The Disney Fantasy has 14 passenger decks. Deck 1 is an interior deck on the lowest part of the ship. Deck 14, inside the forward funnel, houses the private Outlook Lounge.

There are three sets of passenger elevators and staircases, noted by "E" on the deck plans, located in the front, middle and rear of the Disney Fantasy.

You should note that not all elevators can access every deck. For example, the forward elevators can not access deck 14 and the aft (rear) elevators can not access deck 14 or the staterooms and restaurant on deck 2 or the Health Center on deck 1.Don't be confused. The deck plans will guide the way for you.

We'll take you on a deck by deck tour starting with deck 1. Along the way, we'll provide images, tips and other helpful information to make your cruise the best experience it can be.

To jump to a specific deck, click the link to that deck below.

Disney Fantasy Deck 1 Plan

Deck 1 Directory
Health Center - forward
Tender lobbies - forward, midship, aft

Deck 1 is the lowest passenger deck of the Disney Fantasy and houses the Health Center, which you can access using the forward elevator bank.

Please note that the Health Center has limited "walk-in" hours. See your Personal Navigator (which you will receive in your stateroom each night) for specific hours during your cruise. If you need immediate medical attention, a doctor and nurse are always on call.

Deck 1 also has three sets of "tender lobbies" which are used to embark and debark the ship in certain ports of call. In Port Canaveral, you will use deck 3 but in other places, you will use these lobbies on deck 1. There is one set at the bottom of each set of passenger elevators.

The Cruise Director will make an announcement letting you know which lobbies to use will be made prior to allowing passengers off the ship. Make sure you use the correct set of elevators that correspond to the lobby you are instructed to use.

... and don't forget to bring your Key To The World ID and passport every time you disembark the ship.

SHIP TIP...

All staterooms are equipped with two "Wave Phones", wireless phones that work anywhere on the ship and on Castaway Cay. The Wave phones replace the pagers parents with children in Youth Activities were previously issued. You may dial Wave phone to Wave phone, Wave phone to stateroom phone, or any shipboard phone to Wave phone. Each Wave phone has a unique number.

If the phones are lost, damaged, or not returned to the stateroom there is a $250 charge per phone that will be charged to the stateroom account.

Disney Fantasy vs. Disney Dream

Sister ships but not identical...

Disney_Fantasy by madle-fotowelt.de on Flickr

The Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are "sister" ships, nearly identical in appearance and size. Both were built in the same shipyard in Papenburg, Germany and have the same number of staterooms, restaurants, shops and pools...but there are some differences.

On the exterior, the Disney Dream features Mickey and three Fantasia brooms on the stern touching up the "Dream" logo. The Fantasy has Dumbo with Timothy Mouse in his cap, paint brush in hand.

The scrolling design on the underside of the bow of the Fantasy (right) features "Sorcerer Mickey". The bow of the Dream has "Captain Mickey". A slightly different version of "Sorcerer Mickey" is displayed prominently on the bow of the Disney Magic. The Disney Wonder features "Steamboat Willie".

Image courtesy of madle-fotowelt.de through Creative Commons.

On the inside, the first difference is noticeable upon boarding and entering the Atrium lobby on deck 3. The Dream, modeled after the Magic has a more subtle Art Deco design. The Fantasy and Wonder feature Art Nouveau style...patterns and hues of vibrant blue, green, pink and gold..

Other differences, including new features exclusive to the Disney Fantasy, include ...

Atrium Statue
Disney Cruise Line Minnie Mouse statue by bright_shadow56 on Flickr

The atrium lobby of the Disney Fantasy features Mademoiselle Minnie Mouse, dressed to the nines inspired by ocean travel of the 20's and 30's, complete with parasol and a steamer trunk. In comparison, the Dream's lobby features a bronze statue of Admiral Donald Duck

The Disney Magic's lobby has a statue of Helmsman Mickey behind a ships wheel. The Wonder's lobby features Ariel in front of Triton's, one of the Wonder's three main dining rooms.

Main Dining Venues
Royal Court by insidethemagic on Flickr

Right off the atrium of the Disney Fantasy is one of the three main dining venues, Royal Court. (the Dream has Royal Palace).

Royal Court, inspired by classic Disney films including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty And The Beast, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, features a stunning chandelier in the center of the dining room and hand-crafted mosaic tile wall murals of the princesses, Cinderella, Snow White (left), Belle and Aurora.

The two other rotational dining rooms on the Fantasy will share the same names as those on the Dream, Enchanted Garden and Animator's Palate, although the "shows" at the latter are different.

Nightlife and Adult Clubs
Disney Fantasy - The Tube Night Club by insidethemagic on Flickr

After dark, the nightlife on the Disney Fantasy comes alive at Europa (left), the adults-only area made up of five bars and dance clubs.

Themed around European travel, venues include the Italian-themed La Piazza lounge, complete with Venetian masks, and Ooh La La, a bar turned elegant French boudoir with velvet walls.

Pictured left, "The Tube" on the Disney Fantasy courtesy of insidethemagic through Creative Commons.

For fans of public transportation, the Tube Bar is a tribute to the London Underground. Decor will include a tube map, mod red furniture, an English phone booth and an illuminated Union Jack dance floor.. O'Gill's Pub, a rollicking Irish bar with dark woods, brass accents and a selection of Irish beers and Skyline Lounge round out the options in Europa.

There are three new areas unique to the Fantasy (but we'd be surprised if the Dream is not retrofitted with these fun features very soon).

Bibbidi-Bobbidi Boutique
Disney Fantasy - Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique by insidethemagic on Flickr

Girls and boys can now get makeovers on the high seas at Bibbidi-Bobbidi Boutique, a Disney Fantasy exclusive. Young princesses can receive a variety of magical makeovers complete with a new hairstyle, makeup, nails and costumes. On pirate party nights, the Boutique transforms into a place where boys, girls and grownups can get ready for the pirate life with beards, bandanas, swords, scars and eye patches.

Satellite Sun Deck
Disney Fantasy - Satellite Sun Deck by insidethemagic on Flickr

Exclusive to the Fantasy, the Satellite Sun Deck on deck 13 forward will have a new water feature called Satellite Falls, a circular splash pool with benches and a gently falling rain curtain for adults 18 and older to cool off. This area will complement the adults-only Quiet Cove Pool and Bar on deck 11.

Aqua Lab
Disney Fantasy - Aqua Lab by JodiGrundig on Flickr

Located on Deck 12 near the entrance to the AquaDuck water coaster, AquaLab is an 1,800-square-foot water play area with pop jets, geysers and bubblers.

As the story goes, AquaLab was created by Donald Duck's nephews - Huey, Dewey and Louie - and features a variety of water "experiments" designed to drench the entire family.

The Making of The Disney Fantasy

Disney Fantasy Final Piece

The Disney Fantasy, following in the footsteps of her sister ship, the Disney Dream, was built in pre-fabricated "modules" and assembled at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The picture above is of the final piece of the Fantasy's bow being lowered into place.

In contrast, the Disney Magic and Wonder were built in two halves, a front and back, in separate locations and brought together and assembled in Italy prior to their maiden voyages in 1998 and 1999 respectively.

Below is a time lapse video of the construction of the Fantasy.

The bathroom does not have a conventional 110V outlet. It does have a special shaver outlet in the ceiling of the bathroom, pictured below.

Inside or Outside Stateroom ?

The Choice Is Up To You...

SHIP TIP...

The choice of whether to select an inside or outside stateroom comes down to three factors: price, availability and the cruise experience you and your party are looking for.

Price : You'll pay more for a stateroom with a verandah.

Availability : Because inside stateroooms are less expensive and there are less of them on the Disney ships, they may not be available unless you book early.

Experience :
After being in staterooms with and without outside access, I can confirm you will probably spend more time in your stateroom if you have a verandah. Inside staterooms have the opposite effect and tend to force you out into the open spaces of the ship.

With the introduction of the "Magic Porthole" on the Dream and Fantasy in every inside stateroom, guests will feel less cramped in an inside stateroom but you will still need to exit to smell the fresh ocean air, a luxury guests staying in a stateroom with a verandah don't have to leave their stateroom for.

One last consideration... you will probably sleep better in an inside stateroom. Even though outside staterooms have room darkening curtains, sunlight will still seep through and wake up light sleepers. Inside staterooms stay dark until you're ready to wake up. (just don't sleep through your cruise !...)

SHIP TIP...

Can't decide between two entree's for dinner ?...ask your server to bring both and they will do so happily.

...and if you especially enjoyed something from a previous night, let your server know. They will usually be able to get you the same entree even if you are in a different dining room. The same tip applies to dessert. Just don't tell your server you "don't want anything".

Special dietary requests can also usually be accommodated with at least 24 hours notice. Tell your server and they will check with the chef.
