Cars 2 Coming in Summer 2011
Disney Pixar will be releasing Cars 2 in June, 2011. The film was originally scheduled for release in 2012, but was moved up a year. Brad Lewis, who produced Ratatouille, will take over as director from John Lasseter, who is now the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Disney, and Lightning McQueen and Mater will be taking a trip around the world.
What's New with Cars 2?
Will the sequel include all the characters from the first film?

Cars is the second Pixar film (Toy Story was the first) to have a theatrical direct sequel. Cars 2 was originally scheduled for 2012, but was brought forward a year, and is now scheduled for release June 24, 2011. The movie is the first of two Pixar films to be released in 2011, marking the first time that the studio has released more than one film in the same year. The second film, The Bear and the Bow, will be released at Christmas and is Pixar's first fairy tale.
In Cars 2, Lightning McQueen and Mater will travel around the world, but it's unclear whether all the other characters from the first movie will return. The character of Doc Hudson was played by Paul Newman, who died of lung cancer in 2008. Cars Director John Lasseter was originally adamant Newman would return, but recently told MTVLasseter said they would "see how the story goes with Doc Hudson....It'll be hard to replace Paul Newman, but we don't know yet."
George Carlin, who was the voice of Fillmore, has also died, so it's unclear whether he will be replaced or if Fillmore will be written out of the sequel.
The sequel will have to work hard to live up to the standard created by the original Cars movie. Cars was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2006 (but lost the Oscar to "Happy Feet"). It was also named the Best Animated Feature Film of 2006 by film critic associations such as the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review. In addition, Randy Newman and James Taylor received a Grammy Award for the song "Our Town," which was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Cars was also selected as the Favorite Family Movie at the 33rd People's Choice Awards. Perhaps the most prestigious award that Cars received was the inaugural Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Cars also won the highest award for animation in 2006, the Best Animated Feature Annie Award.
More About Pixar
Pixar Animation Studios is a CGI animation production company based in Emeryville, California, United States. To date, the studio has earned twenty-two Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, and three Grammys, among many other awards, acknowledgments and achievements. It is one of the most critically acclaimed film studios of all time. It is best known for its CGI-animated feature films which are created with PhotoRealistic RenderMan, its own implementation of the industry-standard Renderman image-rendering API used to generate high-quality images.
Pixar started in 1979 as the Graphics Group, a part of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm before it was bought by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1986. The Walt Disney Company bought Pixar in 2006.
Pixar has made 10 feature films beginning with Toy Story in 1995 and each one has achieved critical and commercial success. Pixar followed Toy Story with A Bugs Life in 1998, Toy Story 2 in 1999, Monsters, Inc. in 2001, Finding Nemo in 2003 (which is, to date, the most commercially successful Pixar film, grossing over $800 million worldwide), The Incredibles in 2004, Cars in 2006, Ratatouille in 2007, WALL-E in 2008, and Up in 2009 (the first Pixar film presented in Disney Digital 3-D). Pixars eleventh film, Toy Story 3, is scheduled for release on June 18, 2010.
All six Pixar films released since the inauguration of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2001 have been nominated for the award, with four, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and WALL-E, winning it.
On September 6, 2009 John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich were officially handed the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Biennale Venice Film Festival. The award was presented by Lucasfilm founder George Lucas.
