Racing into radiator springs, lost and with sheriff in pursuit Lightning McQueen causes mayhem, various accidents and near misses he ends up towing the local statue of stanley around with him, tearing up the towns road eventually snagging on an electricity pole and strung up, sheriff is able to catch up and the rookie wakes the following morning in the local pound, wheel booted and faced by mater. Led to the courthouse Lightning thinks he's got the green light to leave town as the towns judge, Doc Hudson, see the resemblance to a racing car and dismisses the case, however the towns laywer, Sally carrera, enters the courtroom and after a loyal township speech persuades Doc to change his mind and sentances Lightning McQueen to fix the road which he tore up the night previous.

Mater removes the wheel boot and Lightning see freedom ahead only to find the townfolk aren't as dumb as he thought, they syphoned his gas while he slept. Knowing that he is to be freed once the road is re-surfaced Lightning sets to the task and rushes on through to get the job complete. The towns folk though don't like his work and Doc orders him to start over, protesting, Lightning McQueen gets Doc to give him a chance and the judge gives him the option of a race with the loser having to re-do the road surfacing, again Lightning see this as his freedom to get back on track and get to california and so the pair line up to compete. Doc, knowing what he is doing lets the rookie set off at lightning speed and follows round with Mater. Lightning McQueen doesn't know the track and the inevitable happens, he veers off the road and into the cacti, Doc knowing this all along, Lightning McQueen now has the road to start all over again.

Lightning, feeling totally embarrassed, sets to ripping up his attempted go at re-surfacing the road, seeing his only option of getting to california is if he completes the road and makes a good job of it. He works through the night and sees the townfolk starting to warm to him. He runs out of asphelt and Doc finds him the following morning, back practising, trying to master the corner which sent him veering into the cacti during his race with the Doc. The townfolk wake to see the road progessing and cant believe the fantastic job Lightning has made so far and even Doc has to comment on the standard of the new road.

The cars are inspired by the road and begin to tidy up their town, painting the garages and other buisinesses, and all seem to be warming to Lightning McQueen as the days pass. Lightning himself, starts to see a different outlook on life, Mater takes him tractor tipping and Sally offers him a cone at her motel. Lightning is set aback when Mater declares that he made a good choice in choosing his best friend - Lightning McQueen....

Enjoying his night at Sally's cone, Lightning wakes and inadvertantley ends up in Docs garage, he is taken aback when he discovers that Doc has three piston cups stashed away and realises that Doc was the hudson hornet, a previous, three time piston cup winner and record breaker. Lightning excitidly tries to tell the other cars but is mocked and none of them can believe that Doc was once a racecar. Sally invites Lightning for a drive and they head for the mountains to enjoy some quality driving time together. Sally show Lightning the wheel well motel, which used to be the most popular place to stay on route 66, Sally goes on to show Lightning a different outlook on life and explains how radiator springs used to be a thriving town along route 66 until forty years ago when the interstate 40 highway was built and cars bypassed radiator springs to save ten minutes of driving, forcing buisinesses to close and residents to leave.

On their return to town Lightning discovers Doc on the dirt, unaware that Lightning is watching Doc wants to prove to himself that he can take the corner which McQueen can't master and roll back the years, he manages in great style as Lightning watches on in awe of the past champion. Discovering Lightning had been watching Doc races back to his garage with Lightning in pursuit, he tries to persuade Doc that they are the same and Doc shows him the newsclippings of how his career ended, a bad accident left Doc out for the season and on his return the team disowned him favouring a new rookie.

As the days had passed and his close cruise with Sally, Lightning McQueen had made true friends in the townsfolk of radiator springs. The cars felt let down when they discovered the road finished and no sign of Lightning only for Lightning to show up, wanting to spend an extra day with his new friends. Lightning McQueen spends the day using the towns shops to have new tyres fitted and a new paintjob and surprises the cars by having all the towns neon lights fixed which light up in the evening darkness.

The cars think Lightning has waved a magic wand as they see visitors headlights approaching in the distance only to find it's the media along with Mac, to pick McQueen up for the trip to California. With some deep soulsearching Lightning reluctantly gets into Mac and heads off for California and to Sallys surprise the media thank Doc for the tip off which Sally angrily accuses Doc of doing for his own purposes and not considering anyone else.

As the race begins, McQueen's distracted and his thoughts keep drifting back to Radiator Springs and it shows in his racing as he falls a full lap behind. However, to his surprise he gets a message through his intercom with the pits from Doc, and he sees his new friends lined up in his pits as his new pit crew. This lifts Lightning's feeling and he races like never before and with the help of his friends and their amazing wheel changing speed and some of the tricks Doc had taught him he manages to make up the full lap and the trio enter the last lap with Lightning in the lead.

Chick hicks, very unhappy at looking at coming third and yet again behind the king deliberately rams into the king causing him to have a spectacular crash and end up a near total wreck and out of the race. Lightning see the kings wreckage just in time and skids to a halt just before the finishing line and chequered flag and chick hicks passes him to take the winners spot. Lightning has visions of Doc in the Kings position all those years ago and backs up to the king and pushes the King to and over the finish line so he can finish his last race. Chick hicks ends up celebrating his win with himself and everyone else can only think of the sporting gesture made by Lightning, even Dinoco congratulate Lightning and offer him the sponsorship deal who so craved for but the new Lightning McQueen turns the offer down as he wants to stay with his new friends and the people who got him to where he is today.......he does however call in one favour with his new Dinoco friends - He gets Mater a ride in a dinoco helicopter.

Hopefully you will agree the Disney pixar cars movie is a great family film and we hope we haven't spoilt the storyline for anyone who hasn't yet seen it.
