The toy story 2 movie opens with Buzz Lightyear flying through the galaxy and landing on an alien planet, in gamma quadrant sector 4 that has all the signs pointing to being the location of Emperor Zurg's fortress. He thinks the planet is uninhabited and he reports back that there is no signs of intelligent life anywhere, but, to his surprise, hundreds of robots appear and aim their lasers towards him and are about to blast him when Buzz expertly uses his laser, aims it at a crystal formation that reflects the laser and destroys all the robots.
Buzz is blown into the air with the resulting explosion and then finds he has to run away from the falling debris. Taking shelter against some rocks a robotic eye projects out and as Buzz blasts it with his laser he finds the ground underneath him opening up and he jumps down and finds himself at the entrance to Emperor Zurg's lair.
Inside the lair Buzz is unaware that Zurg actually knows he's there and is tracking him on a giant Zurg vision screen. Running through the lair Buzz Lightyear avoids death from a number of traps and finally finds himself in front of a floating battery . . . the source of Zurg's power.
Unfortunately, it was all a trap and Emperor Zurg himself shows up to face off with Buzz. It doesn't all go Zurg's way though and Buzz initially defends himself well, deflecting Zurg's bullets, but as Buzz tries to release his laser and defeat Zurg once and for all, Emperor Zurg beats him to it and shoots Buzz Lightyear !

There is no need to worry though, we see the Game Over notice and realize that Rex is playing a video game and the movie moves back to Andy's bedroom with Rex declaring "I'm never gonna defeat Zurg" while Buzz reassures him "You're a better Buzz than I am"
Sheriff Woody at this time is getting ready to head off to Cowboy Camp with Andy. He's very nervous and in a state of panic trying to organize the toys while he's away and desperately looking to find his hat, worried that Andy won't want him without his precious hat. All the other toys are searching for the hat and Buzz assures him that they will find it and shouts the other toys for any progress in the search. The toys continue to search and Bo Peep reminds Woody that the boy who wrote his name under Woody's boot would take him to cowboy camp with, or without his hat but is then distracted as her sheep accidentally pull Rex onto the TV remote which turns on a commercial for Al's toy barn, with a man dressed as a chicken advertising toys, and the toys scramble to turn the TV off before someone hears it.
With this Slinky comes into the bedroom announcing he has some good news and some bad news. The good news is that he has found Woody's hat, the bad news is where he found it. With that you hear Buster the dog barking, approaching the bedroom, Sarge and the bucket of soldiers try to push to the bedroom door while Woody hides but Buster is too much and dashes into the bedroom causing mayhem as he tries to sniff out Sheriff Woody. Knocking toys adrift in his efforts Buster finds Woody hiding in a satchel and tosses him across the bedroom floor giving the impression he is not being friendly, that is until Woody shouts up to Hamm, asking how did he do to which Hamm replies that it looks like a new record referring to the time it took Buster to find Woody in a hide and seek game.

Woody instructs Busters to sit, reach for the sky and then play dead just before the toys hear Andy returning to his room, Woody tells the others that he'll see them on Sunday and then Andy comes in and picks Woody up and asks him if he's ready to go to cowboy camp. With that though Andy's mum shouts Andy and tells him that he has just five minutes until they leave. Excitedly, he decides that five minutes is more than enough time to play a quick game with his favorite cowboy . . .but just as Andy's mum comes to get Andy to leave Woody's arm is accidentally torn. Andy is heartbroken and decides to leave Woody behind. Andy's mum puts Woody up on a shelf to await the return of his owner. The other toys can't believe what's happened and the fact that Woody has been shelved.
Andy returns early from cowboy camp and rushes to his room to find Woody and starts to play until suddenly realizing that Woody's arm is still torn. He drops Woody to the floor which sends Woody into a terrible nightmare, dreaming that Andy has thrown him into a dustbin full of broken toys. With that Woody awakes and disturbs some dust back up on the shelf. With the dust disturbed he hears some coughing and when he moves aside a book, he finds Wheezy, a toy penguin whose squeaker is broken. Wheezy tells him that toys like them are destined to be sold at a yard sale just as Andy's mum is arranging one and Woody quickly warns the other toys. The toys panic as Andy's mum comes upstairs to gather up any old toys and books and she grabs Wheezy, tossing him into the box along with a few other playthings.
To save Wheezy from being sold, Woody whistles for Buster, climbs down the shelf, and then rides the dog out into the yard sale, where people are already gathering to buy. The toys think he's on a suicide mission until they realize it's a rescue attempt. In the yard Woody gets the penguin, stuffs him under Buster's collar and they set about to return to the house when Woody accidentally falls off without Buster realizing.

A little girl notices Woody and picks him up asking her mum to buy him but as she says no, Woody is spotted by a collector who tries to buy him. Andy's mum refuses, knowing how special the cowboy is to her son, the collector won't give up though and ups his offer to which he is still told no. Deceitfully he distracts Andy's mum and steals Woody, placing him in his bag. All of this is seen by the toys upstairs and the moment the collector grabs Woody and sneaks him into his bag, Buzz Lightyear rushes out to try and save him. He nearly makes it, but falls off the car's bumper and is only able to catch a feather and watch as the car drives away. He gets the license plate though, LZTYBRN and heads back into the house to figure out the clues. While Etch-A-Sketch draws a composite of the villain Mr. Spell helps Buzz decipher the license plate, Al's Toy Barn, the TV commercial from earlier, with the feather being a big clue, relating to the chicken in the commercial. The toys have their villain.

Woody's Roundup

Woody finds himself in a strange place, the collector's studio and when he tries to escape, he's stopped by Bullseye, a friendly stuffed horse. He then meets Jessie, a cowgirl and Prospector Stinky Pete who is still mint in the box. All three are so excited to see Woody especially Jessie and Stinky Pete states "we've waited countless years for this day"
When they realize that Woody has no idea who he really is, they turn up the lighting and reveal an array of memorabilia from Woody's television series, Woody's roundup. They then play him a video of the opening credits from an episode of the series and Woody is taken aback as he discovers that he was once extremely famous.
Back home, the other toys find an ad for the toy store on the television and get the location. It's only a few blocks away. They decide to mount a rescue mission, which will involve Hamm, Slinky, Rex, Mr. Potato Head and, of course, Buzz Lightyear.
Back at the collectors studio Woody is open mouthed with amazement, watching videos of his roundup series, but as he watches the last one, Woody is surprised to discover that his TV series was cancelled once astronauts became popular. However his excitement over his fame and finding the others from his series quickly wanes once he is told that they are now a complete collection and are about to be sold to a museum in Japan. Woody tells the others that he can't go and he has to find his owner, Andy.
Jessie, very upset, replies by saying that she can't go back into storage and Stinky Pete explains that without Woody they will end up back in storage as the museum only wants a complete collection. Stinky Pete and Jessie try to convince Woody that Andy doesn't care about him because he ripped his arm and he was in a yard sale but Woody's adamant that he needs to find Andy.

The Search Continues

With that Al returns and starts to arrange the toys in poses to take photos but as he moves Woody he manages to rip the tear in his arm further which causes Woody's arm to fall off. Unable to take the photos, Al sticks the arm in his pocket and calls the repairman, referred to as the 'cleaner' who is unable to make it until the morning to repair Woody.
Meanwhile Buzz has to keep the morale of the rescue team up as he recalls how Woody has helped them in the past referring to a couple of instances from the original toy story movie.
That night at the studio, Woody attempts to get his arm back while Al is asleep on the couch, Bullseye tries to help but their efforts are thwarted when someone turns on the television set loudly and wakes Al to find Woody on the floor. He returns Woody to his case and sets off to bed. Woody thinks it was Jessie who turned the TV on and confronts her about it. They start to fight and Stinky Pete has to intervene and calm them down, at least that is until the morning.
The rescue team is still marching along the streets and as morning hits, they have to cross a busy highway. They're scared to go out there, but Buzz comes up with a plan. They all don traffic cones and move across the street, wreaking havoc as they stop whenever the light is green. A truck ends up skidding to a stop and the toys barely miss being rolled over by a cement sewer pipe upon reaching the other side Mr Potato Head declares "ah that went well"
Up in the apartment the 'cleaner' arrives and asks "is the specimen ready for cleaning" and with that sets up his toolbox of tricks and grabs Woody to set about repairing and cleaning him up.
Finally, safely in the parking lot of the Toy Barn, the other toys get into the toy store and are ready to begin the search for Woody unaware that he is actually at Al's studio being cleaned up and repaired by the cleaner as they search the store.
Buzz starts looking on his own and comes across an aisle totally dedicated to him, a sign saying 'new utility belt' intrigues him and he has to investigate further. The others, Rex, Hamm, Slinky and Mr Potato Head have found a car and are searching in style.
Buzz goes to touch the utility belt the other Buzz Lightyear is wearing but he grabs him and tells him "your breaking reg's ranger" to which Buzz says "tell me I wasn't this deluded" and the two space rangers start to grapple.
The others have drove into a party being had by all the Barbie dolls and they ask for directions to find Al's office and tour guide Barbie jumps into the car and starts taking them on a tour of the toy store.
Meanwhile the other Buzz has apprehended the real Buzz and locks him in a Buzz Lightyear toy box on the shelf with all the other Buzz's just as the other toys come round the corner and the 'fake' Buzz ends up joining the rescue mission.
At the studio Al can finally take the photos of Woody and the others and then makes his way to fax them to the museum. Stinky Pete encourages Woody to speak to Jessie before he leaves and Woody is surprised as Jessie dreams of when she was loved and had an owner, Emily, who abandoned Jessie when she grew too old to play with her anymore. Woody starts to leave but Stinky Pete has one last word and gets Woody to thinking that he might eventually get abandoned and eventually Woody declares "who am I to break up the round up gang"

The Rescue

The rescue mission are now in Al's office, searching for Woody everywhere. They hear someone coming and hide as Al comes in and faxes the photos to the museum. They realize that he does have Woody upon seeing the photos and get into his satchel. Out in the store, Buzz manages to get free of the box and sees Al heading out the door. He runs and carries out some great acrobatics to catch up with him, only managing to reach the door just as it closes and sees Al drive across the street. To operate the pressure pad for the door Buzz Lightyear knocks over some boxes which manages to open the door . . . unfortunately one of the boxes is that of Emperor Zurg who spots Buzz running across the parking lot and heads out after him.
Al heads back to his studio but leaves the satchel in the car with the toys in. The toys are starting to realize that the other Buzz is acting a little weird. He's trying to fly and use his laser, but he is leading the mission well, so they follow him. As they debate how best to get into the apartment, the other Buzz finds a way in through an air duct vent. The toys think that the Buzz aisle has gone to Buzz's head with all his strange antics as they make their way through the duct. The real Buzz is now closing back in to his friends as he hears their voices coming from the hole left by the vent cover.
Al packs up all the round up memorabilia and takes it down to the lobby, while the Roundup Gang celebrates the fact that they're going to Japan. Even Woody is excited now!
The rescue team manage to navigate the elevator shaft and can hear Woody's voice getting closer. When they get to a vent in Al's studio they can see Woody on the other side and think he is being tortured. They use Rex's head to crash through the vent cover and believe they are saving Woody from his captors. Woody tries to explain that they are his friends but the imposter Buzz picks Woody up and heads towards the vent, but stood in his way is the real Buzz Lightyear. The toys are confused as the two Buzz's argue who is the real Buzz Lightyear. The real Buzz proves himself by opening the helmet of the fake who freaks out.
The toys try to take Woody home, but he decides he wants to stay with the Roundup Gang. Buzz tries to talk him out of it, but Woody is convinced that he's an amazing collector's item and that he can't abandon the roundup gang.
The toys head out without him, determined to be home before Andy returns that night. When Woody hears "You've Got a Friend in Me" on the TV, he realizes that Buzz and the others are his real friends. He scrapes off his shoe to show Andy's name again and realizes that yes Andy may grow up and leave him but he wouldn't miss him growing up for the world. He makes his way to the vent and yells for Buzz Lightyear to wait for him.
Before going he turns around and invites Jessie and Bullseye to go with him to Andy's house before turning Stinky Pete's box around to ask him. As the box turns Woody realizes it's empty and Stinky Pete is stood at the vent tightening the screws back up he then goes over and turns the TV off and Woody realizes that is was Stinky Pete the night before and not Jessie who turned the Tv on to thwart his escape. Woody yells down the air vent for help just in time as Al returns.
Al packs everyone up in a suitcase and heads out. The other toys run to catch the elevator . . . but Zurg is on top of the elevator waiting. He and the fake Buzz Lightyear start fighting while the remaining toys try to pull Woody out of the suitcase but fail. The fake Buzz accuses Zurg of killing his father and discovers that Zurg is really his father. In an accidental move, Rex knocks Zurg off the elevator and finally defeats him.
About to lose Woody for good, the toys follow Al out of the apartment building but he drives away. Mr Potato Head notices an unoccupied pizza planet delivery truck sat nearby and the toys decide to take it and follow. There are three alien toys hanging from the mirror who help the toys figure out how to drive. Buzz steers with Rex giving him instructions and Slinky managing the pedals. On one hard turn, the aliens fly out the window, but Mr. Potato head saves them and the aliens are eternally grateful.

The Airport

Upon arrival at the airport, the toys see Al checking his suitcase in. They climb into a dog carrier and follow the suitcase onto the conveyer belt. Inside the luggage area, they are confronted with a maze of conveyer belts and a number of suitcases, two of which look like the case Woody is in. The toys have to split up to check both, Buzz and Slinky head after one and the other toys the other. Slinky gets caught up in some luggage and Buzz has to continue on his own. Mr Potato Head, Rex, Hamm and the aliens catch up with their case first only to open it and find out it's the wrong one and full of camera flashes. Buzz gets to the right case and opens it, only to get punched in the face by Stinky Pete and he falls from the conveyor.
Woody and Stinky Pete fall out of the case and onto the conveyor fighting and Stinky Pete rips Woody's arm again and is about to destroy Woody when the other toys stun him with the camera flashes. Buzz grabs him and Woody tells him its about time you understood the true meaning of playtime. They grab him and stuff him into a Barbie backpack . . . one that is about to be picked up.
A little girl grabs her backpack and puts a Barbie doll in next to Stinky Pete. The girl is excited about finding a "man doll" in her backpack. Stinky Pete is horrified to see that the Barbie has been drawn on and her hair chopped off as he's carried away and Barbie's explains that he'll like Amy - she's an artist
Bullseye also makes it out of the case, but Jessie is trapped and then the case is picked up a by a luggage handler who takes it out towards the plane on a luggage train. Woody beckons Bullseye and hoists Buzz aboard and tells Bullseye to ride like the wind and they set off after the luggage train. Bullseye manages to catch up to the luggage train and Woody climbs on. Unfortunately for the toys time runs out and the luggage train pulls up to the plane and starts loading Jessie's case on. Woody jumps into a golf bag and manages to get into the hold and find Jessie who is delighted to see him again. Just as they are about to get off the plane the cargo door shuts and the plane begins to taxi down the runway. Woody manages to find and open a hatch to a set of the planes wheel and they both climb out unsure of what will happen next. They are gently edging down towards the wheel when Woody slips and falls, luckily Jessie catches hold of his arm but his cowboy hat falls towards the ground...to be caught by Buzz who is still on Bullseye. Woody directs them to go behind the wheel and he lasso's his pullstring onto a nut. He tells Jessie to imagine it's the last episode of Woody's round up and to let go. They both swing between the wheel and land on Bullseye behind Buzz as the plane takes off in the distance.
Andy arrives home to find not only Woody, but Bullseye and Jessie, along with all his other toys set up on his bed with a welcome home note. Out the window, we see the luggage train from the airport, parked in the street.
The toys are thrilled to be home and Jessie is excited to be back with people again. Woody's arm is repaired once more by Andy who crookedly sews him up. The movie ends with everyone happy to be back and Wheezy breaking into song to celebrate his new squeaker being put in.
