Disney: Tangled – a truly magical cinematic experience

Ranked #8,829 in Entertainment, #135,658 overall

I first saw Tangled in 3D in my local cinema when it was released in the UK in early 2011. I remember being mesmerised by the visuals as well as the story itself. It is a modern take on the well-known Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel.

It has everything a great animated family movie should have: breathtaking scenes, a stunning hero and heroine, scary villains, action, adventure, drama, romance, humour, great soundtrack, witty dialogues and the list goes on. I don’t think there’s any aspect of this motion picture that would disappoint anyone. I remember leaving the cinema thinking ‘We must get this on DVD’ And we did – as soon as it became available! We must have watched it at least 20 times since.

What was surprising for me, is how much my son has enjoyed this film. It’s true he was only six years old at the time we first watched it and he may not enjoy it as much now that he is nine (or at least he would not admit to it!) but he absolutely loved it as much as I did. He learned most of the lines and acted out the dialogues with hilarious results. I particularly remember being cracked up his impression of Flynn’s smolder when he’s trying to impress Rapunzel. The point I’m trying to make is that this story is not just for girls. Boys will find this adaptation of a princess fairy tale just as absorbing and captivating as girls naturally would.

The DVD may have lost the appeal of the big screen 3D effects, but those only provide a transitory ‘wow’ experience, anyway. Most of the time you can’t even remember whether you saw something in traditional 2D or jaw-dropping 3D. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of 3D productions, but at the end of the day what stays with you in the long term is the charm of story and the characters instead. Tangled has plenty of charm to have survived the transition successfully from big screen to home DVD.

If my review wasn’t enough to convince you about the merits of Tangled, watch the official HD trailer on YouTube! It makes me want to watch the whole DVD again!

love it just as much but it is something about frozen that takes the cake...I am wondering if it is the music that steals the show

I loved this movie, the princess was a bit more interesting than the rest of Disney princesses, who are mostly just sitting there and waiting to be saved...

I saw Tangled in the movie theatre too, it's awesome! Definitely an entertaining movie for kids, teens and adults. I'm looking forward to watching Frozen, it looks great:)

I second what GeoffSmith said - Tangled is great for either gender and all ages. My son loves it!

Tangled is far better than Frozen. Sadly, the second one got much more attention. I'm a guy and I loved the humour and story in Tangled. So it's not just a little girls film. It's a comedy for all genders and ages!

Yeah, they managed to hit a sweet spot with Tangled to appeal to a wide range of viewers and they set the bar very high for future productions. Thanks for your comment!

Tangled is really enjoyable, and true, it's not just for girls. I like it a lot, but I have to say that Frozen is a teeny bit higher on my list...the music is incredible.

Tangled is such a wonderful movie. I remember the first time I saw it was on a Disney cruise! Did you know that Rapunzel and Eugene make an appearance in the new Disney Frozen movie?
  • susan369 Jan 28, 2014 @ 1:15 pm
Yes, I've heard about the cameo. I think the same people made both movies. In fact, they're often compared to each other: http://www.hollywood.com/news/movies/56717063/frozen-vs-tangled

I remember seeing the preview and just got a kick out of it. Saw the movie and got a kick out it even more. I don't know what it is but I tend to enjoy princess-like movies even more when the princess is capable of holding own majority of the time.

I know, they managed to make the trailer so you really want to go see the movie!

I wish your poll had more than one option to pick, it was really hard! Loved Tangled, and I love the way that Disney and Pixar are adding just enoough "adult" humor into their movies so that parents aren't bored silly!
  • susan369 Jan 28, 2014 @ 12:44 pm
So true - sometimes I wonder if I like these films more than my kid! Some of the best lines are lost on them. Thank you for your comment!
  • KentuckyGal Jan 28, 2014 @ 9:33 am
My kids and I saw this the first time at the local library on their "Kid Movie Saturdays". Even my teenage boys enjoyed it! Congrats on ROTD!

I am a big fan of Pixar films, So I will be getting this one to watch soon!
  • susan369 Jan 28, 2014 @ 9:24 am
Hi Tony, thanks for your comment. Tangled is not actually a Pixar film, although a lot of people think it is. It's just Disney at its best. This is why I didn't include it in my list, which only shows the Pixar films.
  • MarleMac Jan 27, 2014 @ 8:45 am
I love animated movies, especially Pixar ones! (You honestly can't ask to choose a favourite...everyone on the list above is awesome!!!) Tangled, though has become my most favourite movie EVER! Sorry Donkey (Shrek), Maximus is in the house!

I'm glad to see other people are as enthusiastic about Tangled as I am!

Well, I totally loved this movie too! (to be honest I watch every pixar/disney movie at least once. ha.) Anyway, this one I especially loved and am itching to write a lens about as well because the characters were fun, the voice actors were super talented and the songs were stunning! Anyway, I must have watched it 20 times too (if not more), which is a LOT because I tend to watch a lot of movies in my quest to watch a total of at least 1 movie per day of the year.
