Disney Villains: They're Not Bad, They're Just Drawn That Way

Recently, on a trip to Walt Disney World around Halloween, I was unsurprised to see that the line to get a photo with Maleficent, the malicious witch from Sleeping Beauty, was filled with eager adults. I wasn't surprised because, well, I was one of them.

Why do we love the bad guys and girls? I'll leave that to Carl Jung and a good shrink, but whatever the reason, this lens is all about Disney Villains. Be warned: they're a nasty lot.

Maleficent - Sleeping Beauty

Perhaps one of Disney's most terrifying and beautiful villains, Maleficent not only exudes evil, she exudes style.

Upon the birth of Princess Aurora, Maleficent bestows a gift upon the newborn princess. A gift of death, Maleficent predicts that Aurora will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die.

Obviously, that wasn't a gift on King Stefan's Amazon Baby Registry. With her flair for unique gifts and righteous head pieces, Maleficent remains my personal favorite Disney Villain.

The Evil Queen

She's beautiful, jealous and vindictive. You'd think I was talking about someone from a daytime soap opera, but The Evil Queen is above all that.

Stepmother to Snow White, The Evil Queen uses her as her own personal housekeeper. One is unclear if this is because she really needs the help or if she just wanted to get rid of the shrill singing all the time.

Unfortunately, the slave in the mirror tells her one day that, sorry lady, Snow White's the new IT girl around the castle. Uh uh. Evil Queen's not gonna have that!

Cruella De Vil

Maybe it's just me, but Cruella wins the award for nastiest villain of all. Terrorizing and enslaving humans is, well, pretty bad, but puppies?! For the love of all that is evil! You can't kill the puppies!

Cruella made a name for herself when she became determined to steal a massive litter of dalmatian puppies in order to make her a new fur coat. Was Chinchilla out that season or something?

Ursula

It's a pity that any poor, unfortunate soul ever came looking for help from this broad. So desperate to win American Idol, she had to steal poor Ariel's voice.

As if she isn't bad enough, there's also those two skanky eels of hers. But all good villains have to have at least a couple of minions, right?

Like Cruella before her, Ursula has a penchant for collecting. In this case, it's those poor, unfortunate souls who come to her looking for help. Making them into a bit of seaweed, she enjoys frolicking through her garden of unfortunate souls and playing Operation with her eel friends.

Or maybe not. Either way, she's a nasty one to deal with and has a habit of making deals on which she has no intentions of making good.

Captain Hook

A devious pirate. Nemesis of Peter Pan.

It's Captain Hook's run-in with a crocodile that left him one hand short of a pair and thus gave him his diabolical name. Truly, Hook should be thanking that crocodile. After all, without him, he would have just been Captain or Captain Hand.

Captain Hook's pastimes include terrorizing Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinkerbell, avoiding crocodiles, bossing around Mr. Smee and being a pirate.

Hades

You just can't get much more bad than the Lord of the Underworld, Hades.

Determined to usurp Zeus and become the ruler of, well, all, he must match brawn with Hercules in order to fulfill his wish. Poor Hades. All he wanted was a sweeter crib.

Chernabog

The Chernabog appeared in Disney's Fantasia and while he never said a word atop his perch on Bald Mountain, he really didn't have to. His menacing expression and expansive wings did all the talking for him.

Made of pure evil, Chernabog delights in conjuring up demons and terrorizing the land. It is only the sleepy villagers and their voices ringing out in a chorus of "Ave Maria" that can send him back to his dark home.

The Queen of Hearts

Like many political figures, if it weren't for her power, she'd be downright comical.

Unfortunately, when things don't go her way, the first command she gives her court is, "Off with her head!" Never entertaining the idea of a fair trial, this is one Queen whose bad side you'll be wanting to avoid.

The Big Bad Wolf

When he's not terrorizing The Three Little Pigs, you might find him hanging out at the local BBQ joint.

Apparently tired of terrorizing young girls in red hooded capes, The Big Bad Wolf took a liking to the capturing of live pigs. However, with a grant from Home Depot, these little pigs kept the wolf at bay while lounging in their swank new digs.
