The History of Mickey Mouse
The birth of Mickey Mouse occurred early in 1928 on a cross-country train ride from New York to Los Angeles. Having had his contract proposal for Oswald the Rabbit turned down by his financial backers, 26-year old Walt Disney was returning to Hollywood with nothing. By the end of the train ride, Walt had given birth to a little mouse in red velvet pants and named him "Mortimer." Feeling that the first name was too stuffy, Lillian Disney convinced Walt to rename the mouse "Mickey."On November 19th later that year, Mickey Mouse made his debut in "Steamboat Willie," the first ever sound cartoon, at the Colony Theatre in New York. Actually the third Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie was an overwhelming success and spurred Disney to add sound to the first two cartoons which he then sold to exhibitors along with "Steamboat Willie" as a package of three shorts. Mickey Mouse skyrocketed to fame, enjoying his golden age during the thirties - 87 cartoon shorts were produced by Walt Disney during that decade alone. Technically and artistically superior to other cartoons of the time, Mickey Mouse played everything from fireman to giant killer and introduced an entire cast of animated characters including Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar, Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, and Peg-Leg Pete.
The artistic success of the Disney animators was honored when Walt Disney received an Oscar in 1932 for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Along with his popularity came the birth of the Mickey Mouse Club in 1929 which met every Saturday for an afternoon of cartoons and games in local theaters. The peak of Mickey Mouse's golden age was in his starring role as the Sorcerer's Apprentice in Fantasia (1940), a film that was not only a major artistic innovation but the first to use stereophonic sound in theaters.
Mickey Mouse was the first international personality, laying the groundwork for the entire Disney empire. Symbolizing Disney's positive and upbeat philosophy, Mickey Mouse helped bring America out of the depression and taught them how to laugh. He was a character who dreamed big, and his dreams were universal.

He named his new baby bear 'Winnipeg' or 'Winnie' for short. The little black bear became the troop's mascot and traveled to Europe with the Brigade.Soon after their arrival in Europe, the troops were sent to the battle fields of France. Winnie was given to the London Zoo in December 1919. Winnie was one of the most popular attractions at the London Zoo. One of the many children who adored the fuzzy bear is Christopher Robin, the son of author A.A. Milne. Christopher owned a toy stuffed bear named Edward Bear, but was quickly renamed Winnie-the Pooh. The bear that was given to Christopher in 1921 for his first birthday can still be seen at the New York Public Library.
A.A. Milne started to write a series of books about Winnie the Pooh and his adventures with his son Christopher Robin. The books were set in a 100-Acre forest which was based upon Milne's Sussex country home. The first Winnie-the -Pooh book was published on October 14, 1926. Winnie-the-Pooh was an instant hit and is currently translated into almost every known language. The Winnie-the-Pooh book series was a favorite of the daughters of Walt Disney.
