A ground breaking risk for Walt Disney
The ground breaking Snow White animated movie was first released in 1937. It was an enormous risk for Walt Disney as nothing like it had been tried before.It held the title of the highest grossing movie of all time - until it was over taken following the release of Gone With The Wind. Snow White was the first animated feature film ever and cost $1.4 million to make.
Walt Disney was reputed to have first had the idea for the movie when he attended a silent film version of the story in 1917. He was just 15 years old.
The movie's original gross was $8.5 million. Remember that Snow White was released 70 years ago!
Walt Disney was presented with a special Academy Award for Snow White in 1939. He was given one full sized Oscar and seven dwarf Oscars.

The Princess Cinderella Story
The story of Cinderella dates back to the 17th century. Cinderella's classic rags to riches story was originally written by Charles Perrault to entertain the French court of Louis XIV.The Cinderella story was adapted in 1812 by the Grimm brothers. This was a violent and scary adaptation which fortunately never had wide popularity!
The Walt Disney World studios went through difficult times during World War II and the subsequent years. The Cinderella movie was a big gamble. If it had not paid off this may have been the end for Disney Studios animation. Fortunately, Cinderella was a tremendous success and it was one of the highest grossing films of the year following it's release in 1950.

The Sleeping Beauty movie was first released in 1959. The movie is based on Charles Perrault's version of the classic fairytale.
This was Walt Disney's most expensive movie to date, costing $6 million to make.
Sleeping Beauty wasn't an initial box office success, but has been a great asset to the Disney vault with subsequent reissues at the movie theaters and in more recent years on video and DVD.
Sleeping Beauty was fully restored and digitally remastered for the release of the DVD in 2003.
The look of the Princess Aurora was based upon the film star Audrey Hepburn.

The Little Mermaid - A Technical Challenge
When The Little Mermaid was released in 1989 it marked Disney animation's return to the classic fairy story movie. Based upon Hans Christian Anderson's story the idea of the movie dated back to the 1930s. Walt Disney first had the idea back in the days following the release of the Snow White movie, but for various reasons the project had to be shelved. Those working on the project in the 1980s came upon the concept and the original sketches by Kay Nielson were an inspiration for the movie.The Little Mermaid was an ambitious undertaking - almost 80% of the movie needs special effects. It is estimated that over one million bubbles were needed to be drawn! It was the last Disney feature film to use the traditional hand painted cell method of animation.
The Little Mermaid movie grossed $200 million worldwide on it's first release in 1989. It won an Academy Award for best song Under The Sea and was also a winner for the Best Original Score category.
There have been a number of releases first on video and then DVD. The Little Mermaid video was released in 1990 and was the top seller for that year. In 2006 The Little Mermaid DVD Platinum edition was released and once again became a top seller.

This is the only Disney Princess movie where the heroine is not credited in the title of the film.Released om November 25th 1992, Aladdin became the most successful movie of that year. It went on to gross $217 million in the US and $504 million worldwide.
It wasn't a new concept to have established stars to voice a main character, but when Robin Williams became the voice of the Genie, this was the first time the marketing was directed towards the use of a movie star voice. This was so successful that it is now common for stars to be used to voice Disney animated movies.
The video of Aladdin was released on October 1st 1993. It sold an amazing 10.8 million copies in a week.
The Aladdin Platinum edition DVD was released on October 5th 2004.

This 1991 Beauty and the Beast movie was based upon the 18th Century version of Beauty and the Beast by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont.
To many it represents a subtle move towards the modern Disney Princess - Belle is loyal,intelligent and is not even looking for her Prince.
Beauty and The Beast was the first and only animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture category of the Academy Awards. It was the first animated movie to reach box office of $100 million.
Since it's release many people have speculated on the use of symbolism in Beauty and The Beast. Only the Beauty and the Beast characters wear the color blue - the idea that they are social outcasts is reinforced by their identical colors.
The special edition Beauty and the Beast DVD was released in October 2002. The next expected release is in October 2009.

The real Pocahontas was born around 1695 and was the daughter of Chief Powhatan - the Native American leader of a large number of tribes in the Tidewater region of Virginia. She traveled to England in 1617 with her husband John Rolfe. Why did she go? It was difficult for the colonies to attract new residents, partly because of a fear of the Native Americans. So you could say she was used as an early marketing ploy. She died in 1617.
The Pocahontas movie was always controversial because of it's story. But it is admired for it's technical achievements. It took over 5 years to make.
Pocahontas cost an estimated $155 million to make but grossed over $350 million at the box office.
