Disney Pixar's Up Movie

Disney Pixar's Up movie is now available to own on DVD.  A movie for all the family Disney Pixar's Up tells the story of grumpy, set in his ways, 78 year old Carl Fredricksen. He and his late wife Ellie had always dreamed of a life of adventure but somehow things just always got in the way.

Brilliant innovative animation, creative storytelling and compelling characters all combine to make this perhaps the most exciting movie event of the year. Take and look and see just why Disney Pixar Up movie is a must see for all the family.

Disney Pixar Up Movie

Disney Pixar's 10th movie is one of it's very best. Directed by Toy Story and Monsters Inc Pixar veteran Pete Docter, Up is the story of a 78 year old man Carl Fredricksen and how he finally turns his lifelong dreams of adventure into a reality. This is the first Disney Pixar movie to be released in 3D.

Carl and his late wife Ellie always dreamed of traveling the world but never actually got around to doing it. Something always got in the way. Carl is now under threat of eviction and being moved to an assisted living home. Struck by the realization that time is passing him by Carl decides that now is the time to pursue his dreams of escape and adventure for him and perhaps most of all for the memory of his wife Ellie.

Carl hatches a plan to use 10,000 balloons to make his house fly. But somehow he manages to bring along Russell an 8 year old Wilderness Explorer with him. Russel is Carl's worst nightmare. An over enthusiastic boy with limitless capacity to talk is the perfect opposite of the weary and grumpy Carl. This juxtaposition of the two characters is central to the success of the movie.

Ed Asner as Carl Fredricksen in Up

"All his life Carl Fredricksen dreamed of adventure. Today, his adventure is finally taking off."

Carl is set in his ways. Disney Pixar always presents us with the complete character in a way which is so difficult to achieve in an animated movie. The character of Fredricksen was based upon Spencer Tracy and Walter Matthau He is archetypal "Grumpy Old Man"..

But of course there is so much more to the character. A balloon salesman for all of his life we see how his life, and particularly his relationship and loss of his wife Ellie have shaped this complex character.

The animators at Disney Pixar always create the look of a character to reflect how they view their personality. The animation for Up uses simple shapes as the basis for each character. So as Carl is set in his ways the obvious shape choice is a square. Look carefully at how every detail of the character is based around a square. From Carl's face and glasses right down to his hands and knuckles. We see that Ellie was a perfect foil for Carl - her shape is that of an oval, just like the balloons which he uses for his escape.

Disney Pixar is not only a master of animation. In it's movies the animation is used to tell a story through it's wonderful characters and it would seem that Up is going to be one of the most successful and enjoyable movies of the year. Carl is perhaps what many of us fear that we will become - looking back on dreams which we have given up on when it is too late to change the past.

Russell - The Wilderness Explorer

When Russell arrives at Carl's house he is a boy on a mission. A mission to get the one Explorer badge that he hasn't got already. He needs to earn his Assisting the Elderly badge for a complete set. What he doesn't know is that this is the start of his biggest adventure.

Carl finds Russell's relentless enthusiasm almost intolerable. Russell is a character who knows everything academic there is to know about being a wilderness explorer but knows absolutely nothing about the real practicalities of survival. He makes the perfect foil for Carl and here Pixar has created one of it's most complex and successful comedic relationships. At the start neither of them realize just how much they need the other, but this unlikely duo each learn so much from the other.

Russell is created around an oval shape. Just like the shapes of the balloons and the character of Ellie - both mediums which help Carl escape and realize his dreams. The animation of Russell seems simple but is actually very complex - he is designed around many layers. Disney Pixar as always an innovator in the field of animation created new computer programs to simulate the movement of cloth on the characters.

Other Characters in Disney's Up Movie

The central characters of the movie are of course Carl and Russell but there is an impressive cast of supporting roles too.

Kevin

Russell names this 13 foot tall bird Kevin even though she is actually a girl! Disney Pixar created a new technique for animating her feathers to simulate their iridescent quality.

Dug

Dug is the odd dog out in a pack of dogs owned by Muntz the villain of the movie. The character was created to give a different view point of what a dog might really be thinking - rather than what we assume. His collar translates his thoughts into word for him - with comedic results!

Charles F. Muntz

Brilliantly voiced by Christopher Plummer Muntz is the villain of the movie. He was Carl and Ellie's adventurer hero until he disappeared many years ago after being accused of faking the discovery of a species of giant bird.

Disney Pixar Up in 3D

Up is Disney Pixar's first ever movie created in 3D. Pixar has always said that it creates and uses animation effects for the purpose of telling the story. I admit that I have never been a huge fan of 3D but I am eager to see why everyone seems to be saying that it really works in this movie.

Disney Pixar animators used the 3D technology to enhance the story of Up. So 3D technology is used to compress the space when we need to concentrate on an image and conversely to give the image depth when looking at the wide open space of the lost world or to give a sense of being up in the air. So rather than the usual 3D tricks we of course are getting so much more from Disney Pixar - a use of the technology to literally create another dimension for the movie.

Disney Pixar Up - The Design of A Movie

We all know by now just how much research and thought goes into the story and the design process of a Disney Pixar movie.

Venezuala is the location for the movie. In 2004 Docter and eleven of the Pixar artists made a journey to the remote Monte Raraima. It took them 3 days to get there by plane, helicopter and jeep. John Docter says of the landscape "It was pretty wild". He and the animators spent time sketching and photographing the landscape to capture a sense of the magical qualities of the area to recreate in the Up movie. A hidden world which most of us will never see in reality.

They also visited Matawi Tepui, climbed to Angel Falls and spent time in Brazil so that they could capture the look and feel of Carl's adventure.

Is Up the Best Disney Pixar Movie?

Up is Disney Pixar's 10th Movie. Is it the best? Most of the early reviews do seem to think so. I am looking forward to being able to add my own opinion when I see the movie on 29th May.

The other Pixar movies of course are a difficult act to follow. From Toy Story in 1995 to last years brilliant Wall-e, Disney Pixar is certainly used to pleasing audiences with their combination of great stories, characters and breathtaking animation. And it looks as though Up is about to take the movie world by storm.
