Explore the Magical World of the Disney Princess

The Disney Princesses are such a big part of the Disney story. It is over 70 years since the first Disney Princess came to life. Every little girl loves a Princess and the Disney movies and theme parks give us all a chance to dream.

Over the years the Disney Princess movies were vital to the continuing success of the Disney animation studios. Walt Disney took a huge gamble with Snow White. Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty needed to be successful to keep the Disney studios going strong.

Walt Disney knew that each of those early Princess movies had to be a success to continue the studios and to build his dream parks Disneyland and then Disney World. So Disney owes it's world wide success as much to Snow White, Cinderella and the Princess team as it does to Mickey Mouse.

Why do we love the Disney Princesses so much? They are the things that dreams are made of, the stuff of fairy tales. So come and enjoy some Disney Princess pictures, stories and even find out where the best place in the Disney theme parks is to meet them.

Snow White Pictures

Snow White is one of the very best loved on the Disney Princesses - and she was the first way back in 1937. The Snow White story is a traditional fairytale and Walt Disney brought her to life in his ground breaking movie.

The story of Snow White is a true fairytale with a happpy ending. The Evil Queen is consumed with jealousy as Snow White is much more beautiful than she. When she can stand this no longer she orders her to be killed. But the would be assassin takes pity on Snow White and allows her to escape.

Snow White finds a new life in the forest with the seven dwarves. After finding happiness with her new family Snow White is once again hunted down by the Evil Queen. Only a handsome Prince can save her.

Snow White Snowglobes

I have been collecting Disney snowglobes for some time now. I love their beauty and attention to detail. I particularly like the snowglobes featuring the Disney Princesses. Here are some featuring Snow White.

Princess Aurora and Snow White

Aurora n Snow

At Disney World watch Dream Along with Mickey and see all your favorite Disney Princesses including Snow White and Aurora. The show is staged every day in front of Cinderella's Castle.

Disney Princess Cinderella

Cinderella is a very traditional Disney Princess. She suffers greatly at the hands of her wicked step mother and step sisters. But she is saved by the love of a handsome Prince.

When the Cinderella movie was released in 1950 Disney was once again under great pressure financially to produce a hit. The war years had been tough and Disney animation needed a financial success. Well Cinderella certainly delivered. The success of the movie allowed Walt to develop more animation ideas and ultimately to build Disneyland. Who knows - maybe without Cinderella there would never have been a Disneyland.

I think of all of the Disney Princesses Cinderella pictures are the ones that I like the very best. I still remember my favorite book as a child was Cinderella with it's pictures of her beautiful dresses. One of the favorite Disney items in my collection now is my Cinderella cericel picture. I guess we never really want to grow up.........

The Disney original cericel's are wonderful art pieces in their own right. I have a number of them but I think my favorite is the one of Cinderella losing her glass slipper whilst running down the grand staircase.

Princess Aurora

Sleeping Beauty Pictures

The World had to wait over 20 years for another Disney Princess - but when she arrived Princess Aurora was worth the wait.

Disney's Sleeping Beauty was based on a traditional fairytale. Its musical score and songs were adapted from Tchaikovsky's ballet.

But Princess Aurora could have been Disney's last movie - it almost bankrupted the studio. It cost $6 million to make but only took half of that at the box office.

But later it became a true favorite and it is now seen as one of the best animated feature films of all time.

Sleeping Beauty was made while Walt was building Disney World. The famous Disneyland castle was originally going to be named after Snow White, but became Sleeping Beauty's castle to promote the movie at the same time as the park.

Princess Aurora is a regular visitor to all the Disney theme parks. A great place to find her is the Princess Storybook buffet in Disney World's EPCOT.

A Platinum Edition of the Sleeping Beauty movie on DVD is due for release in October 2008.

Ariel

Pictures of the Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid recaptured the magic of the early Disney Princess movies. Ariel started a true Disney animation revival.

The character is based on the Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" story. But the Disney version of the Little Mermaid has Ariel as a very different personality. Ariel is a restless teenager - thinking that if only she could have something different then her life would be much happier. She is tempted to give up her most important asset, her voice, to the evil Ursula. So how is Ariel going to win the love of Prince Eric?

The Little Mermaid began a new era for Disney Princesses. The animation technology had changed a lot of course, but more than that, Disney showed that a Princess could have ambition and drive.

Ariel has her own Grotto in Disneyland and Disney World. Try and get there at park opening time when there is usually no wait. At other times the lines can be long but the wait is worth it if only to wonder what magic gets her out of the grotto when she needs to move!

Ariel has her own show in Disney Hollywood Studios - The Voyage of the Little Mermaid. This show is a great mix of animation, visual effects, puppetry and live action. Get there early or get a Fast Pass. It can get busy!

Beauty and the Beast - Princess Belle

Princess Belle in Beauty and the Beast continued the era of the more modern Disney Princess. Belle carried on the idea of the more independent free thinking Disney Princess which had begun when The Little Mermaid was released.

Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite Disney Princess movie. This Disney movie is regarded as one of the best animated features of all time. The animation is spectacular and the songs are memorable classics. But most of all I think I enjoy the character of Belle. The independent intelligent woman who will stand up for herself whilst being considerate of the feelings of others. The Disney Princesses had certainly come a long way since Cinderella.

The supporting cast in Beauty and the Beast are wonderful. I love Lumiere's charm, Cogsworth's cynicism, Mrs Pott's nurturing and The Beast's innocence.

Belle is also a regular guest in the Disney parks. He show Beauty and the Beast runs every day in Disney Hollywood Studios. A true Broadway quality production. She also appears for Belle's story time in the Magic Kingdom - one of the best ways in any of the Disney theme parks to see a Disney Princess.

Princess Jasmine

Although she is truly a Disney Princess, this movie was named after her Prince, Aladdin.

Once again amazing animation and great songs make Aladdin a Disney movie classic.

Jasmine, One True Love

Princess Jasmine is determined only to marry for love. She feels trapped inside a gilded cage, unable to find someone who truly loves her for who she is rather than what she possesses. She finds her one true love in an unlikely place and has to fight to escape from the evil clutches of Jafar.

Princess Jasmine makes regular appearances in the Disney theme parks. One of my favorite shows in Disneyland is Aladdin. I am not sure how many times I have seen this show but is must be running into 30 or 40 times. The quality of the production is just amazing - great singing, costumes and stunts. Watch out for the magic carpet ride high above your heads in the theater. Yes it does get stuck sometimes as I have witnessed this! The star of the show? Has to be Genie.

Jasmine can be found in Disney World too. She makes appearances in Magic Kingdom where you can get her autograph.

Mulan

disneyprincess5

Mulan isn't really a Princess but she has been accepted as one in Disney culture. The Mulan movie was another departure for Disney. The movie is seen as an example of spectacular animation. Mulan is not a traditional Princess. She has to fight for her country and to do this must disguise herself as a boy.

The Movie was successful at the box office and also could be said to have truly launched Christina Aguilera to super stardom as she sung the memorable theme song "Reflections' in the movie.

Mulan is difficult to find in any of the Disney parks. The only place I have seen her more than once is in Disney's California Adventure park.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas. A Contraversial Disney Princess

Pocahontas is the first Disney Princess to be based upon a real character. This brings contraversy to the movie and criticism that it is an inaccurate portrayal of the character.

The real Pocahontas was born around 1695 and was the daughter of Chief Powhatan - the Native American leader of a large number of tribes in the Tidewater region of Virginia.

Pocahontas traveled to England in 1617 with her husband John Rolfe. One reason was to persuade the British to come to the colonies as they were in desperate need of new people to move there. She died in 1617.

The Pocahontas movie was always controversial because of it's story. It is not one of my favorites as I feel it does not really capture the elements that a true Disney Princess must. Call me a traditionalist but this one does not inspire me. The ending is sad and my enduring image of this is my then 6 year old daughter in tears!

Pocahontas cost an estimated $155 million to make but grossed over $350 million at the box office.

Pocahontas has her own show in Disney's Animal Kingdom Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends.
