Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

This lens is an enthusiastic look at Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. You've probably already seen this movie (maybe a buncha times), but you just seem to keep going back to it. This is where it all started with Disney, the major success of their very first animated movie.

How can something released in 1937 still be fun to watch for kids (and adults) to this date? Well, its pretty obvious when you revisit it. .. The colorful characters, catchy music, the beautiful backgrounds ... it deserves to stand up against the test of time.

The story follows the fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm with a lot of Disney personality added. It was a success in the theater on multiple occasions. And its worth visiting again 70 years later.

Princess Snow White

Main Character

Snow White at the edge of the forest

Most of the heroes in Disney movies are good-natured, but Snow White seems by far the most courteous and gentle of them all. She cares for a small bird separated from its mother, cleans the dwarfs house before she even meets them, and becomes hospitable even to the witch, who's pretty much as evil as they come. I don't think Snow White has a single mischievous bone in her body. She's so honest and polite its sometimes to a fault, but thats part of her charm.

The Queen in Snow White

Snow White's Stepmother

Snow White's stepmother, the queen

The evil queen is the kind of villain other villains would look up to (or down to?). Extremely vain and menacing, all she cares about is to be the prettiest one in the world. She doesn't even hesitate to order the woodsman to dispatch Snow White and bring back her heart. Even I was a bit terrified of her threatening gaze at a few points.

The Magic Mirror

guidance from beyond

the magic mirror

The mirror is another obedient servant to the queen, with mysterious origin. Its animation is rather creepy, being just a floating mask surrounded by smoke. I assume that it has unlimited knowledge since it knows where Snow White is and that she's the fairest. But its pretty clear that this enchanted item is intended for evil, as it shows no remorse in aiding the evil queen.

The Seven Dwarfs

Seven Dwarfs Snow White

Although the story of Snow White has been told throughout centuries, I think this is the first time the dwarfs were named and given distinctive personalities. They make fun of each other because of their quirks, but they have a strong friendship because they each know they aren't perfect themselves. (Maybe they were part of a bigger dwarf community?)

If you could be the EIGHTH dwarf?

What would you be named?

Snow White had seven dwarves accompanying her throughout the movie. But if you could add a unique and interesting additional dwarf to the bunch, who would they be and what would be their quirk?

Doc

The ringleader

Doc Snow White and the Seven DwarfsDoc

Doc is leader of the dwarfs, but isn't afraid to act as goofy as the rest of them. He's the only one that doesn't have an adjective for a name, but he's not without his own quirk. His biggest issue is tangling words together, especially when he's frustrated. This sometimes makes his suggestions less effective, but the others look up to him anyway.

Sleepy

The Quiet One

Sleepy and his Fly friend

Sleepy, along with Bashful, is pretty quiet and has very few lines in the movie. Instead he has a little fly sidekick that insists on bugging him. Other than that, he's pretty laid back. Also, Sleepy might be brilliant since he's the only dwarf that considered that the animals were warning them about Snow White instead of just acting up.

Happy and Bashful

The Pleasant Ones

Happy and Bashful

Happy is the eternal optimist, like a little santa claus. Bashful is always embarrassed about something. Except for Dopey, these two strive the most for Snow White's attention by trying to be as sweet as possible. Their quirks seem the most subtle and harmless. btw If you have trouble distinguishing Bashful from Sneezy, Bashful has bigger eyes, a longer beard and a green hat instead of brown.

BashfulHappy

Sneezy and Dopey

The gentle fools

Sneezy and Dopey

Sneezy and Dopey aren't too bright but provide comic relief to the bunch. Sneezy literally explodes with wind every sneeze, sending the dwarfs flying. And Dopey is usually off in his own little world, rarely letting reality bother him. I like how they show a neat bond between the two, maybe because they get singled out more than the rest.

SneezyDopey

Grumpy

This is my favorite part of the movie. As honest and G-rated they made Snow White, I didn't expect much more than singing, and otherwise cheerful behavior from her.

But how she deals with Grumpy is actually really amusing.

I like how Instead of sympathizing with Grumpy, Snow White jests with Grumpy's bad attitude until she shows him that he's just being silly.

The "Huntsman"

The Queen's henchman

The huntsman

Not much is known about him, other than he's a servant of the queen. I wonder how the king died, because he sure isn't around. Anyway ... he's probably pretty selfish, but not a murderer. Hence, he isn't able to kill Snow White and instead tells her to run away into the woods. ...

The Prince

The perfect match for Snow White

The Prince

This is the prince that falls in love with Snow White at first sight (or more accurately, first sound). Snow White is enamored by him, but runs away because she's embarrassed about the rags she's wearing. Since she escapes from the hunter into the forest, he probably had no idea where she went, but he searched endlessly for her. Fortunately he heard the news of a maiden in a glass coffin, and appeared to finally break the curse.

Golden Anniversary of Snow White Special

Television tribute to the movie

This came out in 1987 and was pretty neat tribute to Snow White. Hosted by Dick Van Dyke, they have skits and songs, show deleted scenes and reveal a lot about how the movie made such a monumental impact. It also featured Jane Curtin, Sherman Hemsley, Linda Ronstadt and various NBC Stars.

Doc'isms

Snow White Doc

Doc is my second favorite dwarf. He's always trying to lead the dwarfs, but usually gets a bit tongue tied. I've put together a short video with all what I call his "Doc'isms".
