Disney brought Princess Aurora to life in the movies in 1959.
The movie is based on Charles Perrault's version of the classic Sleeping Beauty fairytale.
As with all of his early movies, Walt Disney took a great risk with the production of Sleeping Beauty. It was Walt's most expensive movie at that time. Although it doesn't seem so by today's standards $6 million was a lot of money to make a movie!
Well, Sleeping Beauty wasn't an initial box office hit. But Princess Aurora has been a great asset to the Disney vault with subsequent reissues at the movie theaters and in more recent years on video and DVD.
Sleeping Beauty was fully restored and digitally remastered for the release of the DVD in 2003. And now the Sleeping Beauty DVD is set for a new release on October 7th 2008 with lots of extra features.

Sleeping Beauty is a very popular character in all the Disney theme parks. Disneyland was being built whilst the Sleeping Beauty movie was being made. So the Imagineers came up with the idea that the castle at Disneyland should be named after Sleeping Beauty. So her castle is the first thing that you see when you walk down Main Street USA.
Sleeping Beauty can be seen in spots around Disney World and Disneyland. She appears in the parades, often with Prince Phillip, Fauna, Flora and Merryweather. Once of my favorite characters to meet in the parks is Maleficent. Always very menacing and entertaining! She is often spotted close to Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland.
