Disney Wildlife ConservationWhile at Vero Beach we were lucky enough to Disney release a sea turtle back into the ocean after it was nursed back to health over at EPCOT.
They put a tracking device on it's back. These devices fall off when the turtles molt. They would really like to find a better way to track the turtles, but someone needs to invent a tracking device that would be permanent.
Disney's Vero beach Resort doesn't serve plastic straws because they are harmful to turtles and other wildlife. Does anyone market straws made out of something eco-friendly?

Anyone who has ever had an icy soft drink freeze their front teeth or pour down their chin understands the luxury of a straw.
Unfortunately for many a chilled tooth and stained shirt, this simple tool has long been unavailable at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. The decision to withhold the soda-sucking tubes was made in support of animal safety, as swallowing plastic straws can be harmful to the cared-for critters.
A solution has arrived in the form of new straws constructed of spiral-wound thick paper. The straws are durable, biodegradable, and safe for furry and feathered friends.
"I am excited that we have found a biodegradable, sturdy paper stray that won't cause heath problems if consumed by our animals," said Dr. Mark Stetter, Director of Veterinary Services for Disney's Animal Programs. "Our Parks are always spotless and clean, but on the rare chance that the wind blows a stray into an animal area, we won't have to worry about a straw being a health hazard."
To minimize waste, Cast Members won't add the straws automatically to every drink. Instead, the creature-conscious straws will be available in dispensers on counters and condiment bars, at restaurants and at outdoor food-and-beverage kiosks.
The Resort and Park will continue to refrain from offering plastic lids with beverages for the safety of the animals.

While at vero beach, be sure to look for sea turtle nests. They are marked with red stakes. We were lucky enough to watch the naturalist dig up a recently hatched nest and count the eggs. 2 unhatched, about 50 hatched! This was a small nest. RSS Feed
