Disney World Packages for those with Disabilities

When it comes to Disney World, they have just about everything covered - including helping people with all manner of disabilities. They don't really have any Disney World packages specifically designed for the disabled; it's more that they will accommodate any special needs you have - you just have to tell them.

Disney World Vacation Packages

To start with, you can find Disney World vacation packages on their website Disneyworld.disney.go.com. It is there that you can see what the latest special offers are. Depending on the time of year, they may have discounts for Florida residents; currently they have a four day, four park ticket for just $99, but you must be a Florida resident to buy and use it (they check on that). If you don't live in the Orlando area and need a hotel, there are Disney World packages that save you a minimum of thirty percent on rooms at some of the Disney hotels. With all of these Disney World vacation packages, if you notify the cast members (what they call the staff), they can arrange to put you in a handicap accessible room. These rooms will be larger, have more room around the beds, grab bars in the bathroom, and roll-in showers.

Be Sure To Mention The Special Needs

Even if you're not a Florida resident, rooms designed for handicap access are available; although they are on a first come, first serve basis. When you make your reservation, be sure to mention the special needs of your party, and that way you can reserve the necessary room.

Special Needs

In terms of the parks and access to them, Disney World is quite good. All of their ground transportation can take people with disabilities - even wheelchairs - and they have special seating on the buses. In the parks, most of the rides, shows and attractions have special seating and sometimes special lines for the handicapped. If you need a wheelchair, you can rent one in any of the parks: EPCOT, Magic Kingdom etc. However, their daily rates do tend to be rather expensive - this is one area where they do not give discounts. So, if possible, bring your own; even if you fly, planes - by law - must accommodate your special needs. If you can, get a folding manual wheelchair; even if you normally use an electric chair, as they weigh upwards of 300 pounds, and are difficult to transport. Tolerating being pushed around Orlando for a few days, and a member of your party being okay with pushing you are both far easier to deal with that a large bulky electric wheelchair.

Magic Kingdom

The one area of Disney World where handicap accessibility is rather limited is their original park - the Magic Kingdom. This is due to the fact that it was built back in the 1970's, and back then handicap accessibility was an oxymoron. However, Disney has done a very good job is retro-fitting most of the park. Rides like "Snow White", "Peter Pan" and others where you ride in a small car have been set up so that people with disabilities can easily transfer. Others, like "It's a Small World" actually have entire cars or boats specially designed to carry the disabled without the need for a transfer.

Disney World has also made special accommodations for people with dietary needs. If you have a food allergy, you're on a restricted diet due to a medical condition or you just have to keep kosher due to religious beliefs, this is yet another area where Disney can help. By making these needs known to the cast members at the restaurant where you're eating, they can give you alternative dishes to accommodate you. As with all other helpful aspects of Disney World, special diet needs are met as part of their usual services; none of the Disney World packages are needed to obtain this service.
