Make Getting Your Online Degree Easy

It's time and you're ready and eager to begin your online education. You've gotten your syllabus, schedule and (first) reading materials. You've even made sure to stock up on stationary and set up a place to study in relative peace. In other words, you're about as prepped as any freshman student is going to be - until it's time to take your first class. That's when reality comes crashing down like a ton of bricks.

You're sitting there, suddenly overwhelmed by what you will be required to do. Or maybe you're frantic, thinking you've overestimated your computer skills. Take a deep breath and read about a few tips on how you can make obtaining that online degree that much easier. Keep them in mind for the next several years, and you will find the workload becomes something you can handle with growing confidence.

Set Yourself Up For Success!

First of all, even though you can ostensibly take a class "any time," when you are taking that distance learning course, keep yourself firmly planted on your seat until that module is over and done with. No pausing to go to Burger King. If your favorite pet wants you to stroke its belly, push the furry bugger away. Don't stop in the middle of a lesson because your favorite TV series just went on. Put the show on TiVo or DVR and watch it AFTER you finish that segment

Written communications skills are much more important than oral here. For starters, you can't raise your hand to ask a question. You must type it and wait for a response. Also, make sure to phrase your question clearly and concisely. Not only are writing skills a plus, but so is brevity. The more concise your question, the more comprehensive the answer.

Be Comfortable When You Study!

Take advantage of your anonymity. Unless the course is an online conference, no one is going to know you haven't taken a shower yet. Take the course in your jammies and a night robe, if that's what makes you comfortable. Have your favorite non-alcoholic beverage by your side. You learn best when you are physically comfortable.

Get online three to five times a week per course. People learn best through repetition. Yes, there are going to be parts of one class that repeat to the next, but those recaps are in your best interest. Also, just because you are working at home doesn't mean there isn't a schedule that has to be kept. New modules tend to come up at about three to five times a week. Fall behind and the results are failure, whether you are going for your associates degree or your distance learning masters.

Keep In Touch Online!

Most important, don't be afraid to ask questions! If you don't get something in your latest module, if there is a point or reference that doesn't feel right, shoot a question out there to your prof. That's what he or she is really out there for. It's also a great way to get your educator's attention, particularly if you ask well written questions. You'd be surprised how that can pay off as you go through your online degree program.

If you need more tips, you can go on the web and there will be more than enough tricks and tips to fill a book. Find the ones that you feel the most comfortable with. Just go to Google or your other favorite search engine and type, "online college; tips" and you will get more than you'll need. Otherwise, use these few as the cornerstone in building your academic career. They'll make your life a lot easier in the long run.
