Long Distance Runners Will Benefit From Training With A GPS Watch

Every long distance runner should be training with a GPS watch to maximize their returns from running.  Running, especially long distance running training takes a considerable amount of time and effort.  To ensure that I am making the most of my time out there on the road, I run with a Garmin GPS watch to ensure that I am making the most of my training program.

In preparing for a race, whether it be a marathon or the local 5K, sticking to a proper training plan is key to achieving your goal on race day.  I have found the instant results and information that I get from my GPS Watch keep me on track during training to be able to hit the goal times that I want during the race.  I am able to see my pace, time, heart rate, etc. to know if I am training at my potential or if I need to step it up a bit.

My GPS watch has become a necessity on every run.  I wouldn't ever run without shorts or shoes, and now I would never think of running without my Garmin GPS watch.

Training for Long Distance Running - Running with a GPS

My first experiences with a GPS running watch in my distance running training.

After buying my first Garmin Forerunner, I literally dubbed the first three weeks of distance training with the GPS watch as data collection weeks. I ran for the sole reason for the watch to collect information about me so that I could study it on the computer after the run. I would train and then look at the graphs of my speed and its relationship to elevation changes, heart rate and distance. I ran because I wanted to see what the graphs looked like if I ran flats and then if I ran hills, if I ran the same exact pace every mile on a long run, if I ran negative splits, or if I ran intervals with recovery periods.

Track Every Detail of Your Run with the Push of a Button

Garmin Forerunner watches track all the information that is important to you.

Running with a Forerunner begins with the push of the Start/Stop button. From the time that you started the run until you push that button again to end, the watch will track and record your time, distance, speed, heart rate, pace, lap splits, elevation, training zones, etc. After the run, simply connect the watch to your computer and it will automatically chart every statistic that is important in long distance training.

On the computer screen, you will see the course that you ran in a map view along with charts showing any detail that you choose. You can see exactly what your heart rate was at any given pace, how much you slowed down when you hit that big hill, your mile lap splits for the entire run, etc.

This information is stored into an electronic training log keeping a complete history of your training. Every detail is saved so you can compare any given run and see just how much your times and pace are improving.
