Disturbed Got Down with the Sickness and are now Indestructible

Nearly a decade after the release of their groundbreaking debut, The Sickness, Disturbed have become one of the most passionate and well-respected bands in the hard-rock universe, a dependable source not only of pummeling riffs and jackhammer beats, but of personal and political insights into our troubled times. Yet success (in the form of three platinum-plus albums, with both Believe and Ten Thousand Fists topping Billboard's album chart and over nine million albums sold) hasn't dulled this Chicago-based foursome's taste for adventure. If anything, Disturbed's loyal fanbase has pushed the band to newer heights of self-expression. So it makes sense that on the occasion of their fourth album, Indestructible, that frontman David Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan and drummer Mike Wengren decided to take the reins and produce themselves in the studio.

The History of Disturbed

Disturbed is a rock band from Chicago, Illinois

DisturbedDisturbed is a rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The group was formed in 1996 when musicians Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, and Mike Wengren hired singer David Draiman. Since the band's formation, they have sold over 10 million albums worldwide, released three consecutive number one albums, and have been nominated for a Grammy Award, making them one of the most successful rock bands in the recent years. Only six other rock bands have released three number one albums in a row: Van Halen, Pearl Jam, U2, Dave Matthews Band, Staind, and Metallica.

Classified by most as a rockIndstructible review at Popmatters or nu metal Berelian, Essi, "The Rough Guide to Heavy Metal" (2005), p. 102Disturbed at Rolling Stone magazine Disturbed at NME band, Disturbed is also regarded by some critics as alternative metal.. However, when asked about die-hard heavy metal fans not finding Disturbed heavy enough, frontman David Draiman stated:

"We probably have too much melody going on or we're not quite as turbulent or caustic. While I really love that type of music, it's not what we try to do. If we have to place things in context, we're more hard rock than heavy metal these days."

Inside the Fire music video

by Disturbed

According to guitarist Dan Donegan, "It's about a girl he (vocalist David Draiman]) was in a relationship with. She's committed suicide, and he just has the voice of the devil over his shoulder trying to provoke him to take his own life to join her again, because the only chance for him to be with her again is if he takes his life. We're not condoning suicide off of this, it's just more of the temptation to join a girlfriend that was very confused and messed up and wanted out."

The video for "Inside the Fire" was described as "bloody and intense" according to frontman David Draiman. The video premiered on May 2, 2008 on Disturbed's official site and mainly follows the meaning of the song. Due to the message of the video and the intensity of it, a warning message appears before the video due to its content. Also a suicide hotline number appears at the beginning (foretold by Draiman himself) and the end of the video.

Three versions of the video have been released. The unedited version which follows the meaning of the song, and an edited version of the video.

The Edited Version of the video shows Disturbed playing in an abandoned warehouse (the entire thing is never shown) while having blood on them at certain times. The video is famous for showcasing Don Donegan's guitar techniques including his Over-Hand fret technique during the solo.

A third version labeled "ultra clean" has been sent on May 29, 2008 to TV stations without any blood in it.

Customer Review
The lead single, "Guarded," is a good example of the album as a whole. It begins with a strong, propulsive, jackhammer riff, but the beat then turns to bobbing riffs with staccato vocals, and the song climaxes with a melodic chorus. Some clean singing and a guitar solo are also slipped into the mix, here. "Stricken" is the other single. It has some of David's famous scat, and its choppy, Motorhead-influenced riff and rhythm make it sort of sound like Disturbed's 2002 single, "Liberate." Other album highlights include the skipping riffs on "Deify," "Overburdened" (a slower song and a monotony breaker), the very angry and aggressive "Decadence," "Forgiven" (which has a wah-wah solo), and the crunchy, almost explosive riffs on "Sacred Lie." --- By A. Stutheit "Teyad"

Ten Thousand Fists by Disturbed

The track "Guarded" was the theme song for World Wrestling Entertainment

The track "Guarded" was released to radio stations in late June, 2005 as a teaser, and the fully promoted first single "Stricken" was released on July 20, 2005, and was the theme song for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)'s pay-per-view New Year's Revolution on January 8, 2006. The 2nd single from the album was "Just Stop". The album also features a cover of the song "Land of Confusion", originally written by Genesis. The song became the third single from the album, and the band worked with Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo on the video (renowned comic book artists responsible for Ten Thousand Fists album cover).

This is the first album in which Disturbed's mascot "The Guy" appears full-bodied, and on the album cover. He also appears on the album cover of Disturbed's fourth studio album, Indestructible.

Ten Thousand Fists is the third album by American heavy metal band Disturbed. The album was released on September 20, 2005 and became Disturbed's second consecutive number-one debut on the Billboard 200 in the United States, shipping around 239,000 copies in its opening week. The album was also the band's second number-one release in New Zealand. It also is the first Disturbed album not to feature Steve Kmak as bass guitar player; instead, the album featured John Moyer. The album is also the first in which Disturbed's mascot, The Guy, appears on the album cover, as well as later appearing full-bodied in the music video for "Land of Confusion".

Land of Confusion (live)

The most recent cover version was released by the band Disturbed in July 2006, as the fourth single from their album Ten Thousand Fists. Except for a different style of singing and rock-styled driving pace, the only difference between the songs would be the bridge, replacing Genesis' synthesizer with a guitar solo.

It was accompanied by a music video animated by Todd McFarlane, known for his work with the Spawn comic book series. McFarlane had previously animated the video for "Freak on a Leash" by KoRn, "Do the Evolution" by Pearl Jam, and the "Land of Confusion" video has a very similar style. The song became their first #1 single on the Mainstream Rock Charts on October 26, 2006.

The Sickness by Disturbed

Disturbed's best CD ever!

Customer Review
Even now that nu-metal is about as popular as flannel, I firmly believe that "The Sickness" is a great debut (one of the best debuts this side of the year 2000) from one of nu-metal's best bands. Disturbed's follow up album, 2002's "Believe," is more mature than this C.D., but "The Sickness" is more imaginative. And it's full of raw aggression, off-the-wall energy, and catchy songs (almost every one of these songs is very catchy). "Stupify" has vocal hooks, whereas many of the other songs (i.e. "The Game" and "Down With The Sickness") have cool, fast scat (by frontman David Draiman). "Voices" is another highlight (it has stutter-step rapping and syncopated riffs), as is "Fear" (which has eerie electronics and a mosh-pit ready, fist-pumping chorus) and "Shout 2000" (which is a louder, more pissed off version of a song originally done by a band called Tears For Fears). Finally, with violent lyrics and mean vocals, "Meaning of Life" is a good anthem to listen to when you're mad at the world. -- By A. Stutheit "Teyad"

"Down With the Sickness" by Disturbed

The song was recorded in late 1999, and was featured on their 2000 debut album The Sickness

One of its more memorable traits is David Draiman's percussive staccato howl, which can be heard near the beginning and the end of the song. It is also well known for a "child abuse" segment not played in radio-friendly versions.
