Diverticulitis Diet

One of the major ingredients in a diverticulitis diet is soluble fibre. You want to make sure you have enough souluble fibre in your food intake to assure a regular and easy, light bowel movement!

Surgery for diverticulitis, in which the infected part of the colon is removed, may be required if you have complications, including:

* An infected pouch (diverticulum ) that has ruptured into the abdominal cavity, especially if a pocket of infection (abscess) has formed. In some cases, an abscess can be drained without surgery.
* An infection that has spread into the abdominal cavity (peritonitis).
* A blocked colon (bowel obstruction).
* Infection that has spread through the blood to other parts of the body (sepsis).
* Severe bleeding that does not stop with treatment given through an angiogram or colonoscopy.

Overall, fewer than 6 out of 100 people with diverticulitis need surgery.

Common signs and symptoms of diverticulitis include:

* Pain that's often sudden, severe, and located in the lower left side of the abdomen. Less commonly, abdominal pain may be mild at first, and become worse over several days, possibly fluctuating in intensity
* Change in bowel habits
* Abdominal tenderness
* Fever
* Nausea and vomiting
* Constipation
* Diarrhea

Less common signs and symptoms of diverticulitis may include:

* Bloating
* Bleeding from your rectum
