Survivors taking control over one of life's sad situations
The devil you know, it's said, is sometimes better than the devil you don't know. It can be easier to stay in a situation that doesn't work than to risk voyaging out into a new life and starting over. Transitions aren't easy. Sometimes you just jump in and decide that what's best for everyone is to start over.
You're the one doing this, rather than the one things are being done to, so to speak. Bring on some happiness. Bring on some calm. There's struggle and uncertainty either way. But one thing first. Let's PAR-TAY! Instead of sitting in a cold office, signing some papers and having it done at that, why not starting out this new part of your life with a party?
It can be a brave thing to have one of these parties. You may get some flack. Maybe you'll see some people's true colors? Some may judge you for having a divorce party or divorcing at all. To judge the way someone handles their divorce based on how we feel about divorce personally, how we think we'd handle ourselves in their situation, when we have not walked in that person's shoes or lived that person's life could be seen as illogical and sanctimonious.
I have a quote by Maya Angelou in the description of my Follow your own path and let people talk necklace. She says, "Stepping onto a brand-new path is difficult, but not more difficult than remaining in a situation, which is not nurturing to the whole woman."
As I said in the introduction to the celebrants and divorce rituals lens, people have the right and responsibility to choose if divorce is the right choice for them.
This page isn't about celebrating divorce itself. It isn't anti-marriage. It's about one way that people who've found divorce necessary are being helped to get through it. Someone may want to celebrate his or her freedom and start of a new life after the end of an unhappy union.
One person's divorce party, celebration or ceremony has nothing to do with someone else's happy marriage. The fact that they're having a party doesn't mean that they don't recognize the seriousness of the matter, and this lens isn't judging anyone or anything.
There are several different types of themes, but it's a party. It isn't about the divorce really. And it isn't really about the marriage or the original wedding. It's really about the future and what lies ahead.
This page isn't focused on women. Men can and certainly have had parties themselves. The best ones, as is said over and over, aren't created out of anger and seriously venomous against the ex-spouse.
These events should promote catharsis rather than negativity... Even though some parties and cakes have themes that appear to be extremely negative or even violent, the true spirit is in fun, dark, gallows humor which may be hard to understand for those who are on the outside.
"Some divorcees embrace announcements and parties as a way to put the word out on their own terms and with their own public spin. Christine Gallagher, the Los Angeles author of The Divorce Party Planner, agrees that 'The tone of the announcement can speak volumes about what happened, so that others don't feel it's an unmentionable subject.' Gallagher believes a theme party is key to salving the soul; as a result, she's organized everything from Survivor -themed beach parties to barbecues using the ex-husband's golf clubs as spits."
