Diwali - The Festival of Lights

Diwali or Deepavali is called Festival of Lights. The word deepavali literally means rows of lit diyas (clay lamps). It is the most important festival for Hindus.

And on this day, the houses are all decorated with strings of lights, diyas, candles and lanterns.

This year Deepavali festival was great as I had taken time out to make some lovely votive holders, decorated diyas, designer candles and engaged myself in some glass painting as well. It was a DIY - Diwali Decor for me.

I am sure you will love looking at the lovely photographs and reading more about my craft journey this festive season.

Candle Making

It is a fun craft!

I tried candle making long time during my school days and after that I never got time to try it again. But this Diwali was different. I made some candles and they came out so nice. I would love to make some more candles and try candle decoration and personalizing candles. They surely make a good gift - personalized candles!

Floating Candles

They float and they illuminate your space!

floating candles

Diwali is a time for Rangoli, Flower Decoration and Floating candles. Since I was in the DIY mode, I collected all my left over candles and wax from used candles and using my silicone ice tray, i created some lovely floating candles.

The basic idea behind floating candle is that the base should be slightly smaller. And my ice tray mould was just perfect for that.

DIY - Mason Jar Lanterns

Try making mason jar lanterns!

Mason Jar Lanterns

I had seen lots of mason jar lanterns over the internet and wanted to make some for this Diwali. And after Neo was born last July, we had good collection of mason jars.

So all the mason jars which are otherwise thrown away, were collected, cleaned and were ready to be given a second life. And wow, the result was just amazing. I am sure the Mason Jar lanterns will be hanging in my balcony for some more time!

How to make Mason Jar Lanterns

It is easy and it is eco friendly - recycle and reuse!

Making mason jar lanterns is an easy process. You can either use the jar as it is or to give it some color or have a theme to match, then use food coloring of your choice with watered white glue ( white glue mixed with water in equal parts). Using pliers, cut the required length of the wire and make a handle. I was finding this part a bit difficult so I took help from hubby after making 3 of them on my own.

And yes they exude charm and beauty. Try it if you don't believe me!

Here are some detailed step by step instructions with photographs to make your own Mason Jar Lanterns. You can also buy them if you do not have the time. Check out the listing 4 for buying the ready mason jar lantern hangers.

In the above image, the two votive holders have been designed by me. In the first one, I have used silver shiny yarn and wrapped the glass votive holder with the yarn using glue. In the other one, I have used silver spray paint and a lace strip. I covered the votive holder with the lace and then did spray painting all over. You can see the lovely lace pattern left behind, where the glass was covered with it.

Diya - Clay Lamp

Decorating diya is an important part of Diwali Celebration

Diwali Diya Decoration

These days candles and tealight have become very popular in Diwali celebration, however the age old traditional way of lighting homes on Diwali day using diya is still a favorite. So you will find a mix of diya and candles for Diwali Decoration.

I also bought diyas in various shapes and decorated them using acrylic colors and some gold and silver spray paint. Some I just painted using acrylic color, and used glitter 3d outlines to decorate them further.

In the photo above, I have used wood base below the diya. After fixing the diya to the wood base, I used gold and silver spray paints.

Glass Painting

Decorate your votive holders, glass trays, glass vases

glass Painting for Holidays

Since I was in the recycle, reuse mode for this Diwali, I tried to do the best use of old used items at home. I decorate wine bottles, used glass jars, old glass vases and also my old microwave glass tray using glass painting.

Glass painting is easy and fun as you can keep your designs below the plates or inside the vases and just do freehand outline drawing and fill them with the appropriate colors. I was having some old glass plates with beautiful leaf patterns and using various glass colors and glitter outliner, I decorated them. My personal favorite is the pink glass plate.

BTW, do not throw away old microwave glass trays, they could be reused. With the painting done on the tray, I used the tray for placing candles and diyas and it did give extra sparkle to the light rays!!

My Favorite Festival Lighting

I just loved it!!

This Diwali was so much fun and I got so much satisfaction. Each and every piece of lighting was beautifully and lovingly decorated by me and when finally they were lit, the outcome was more beautiful and sparkling than i had imagined. I loved each and every peice of diya, lantern, candle, votive holders but my personal favorite was this simple and easy votive holders.

These set of 8-9 votive holders, I created using craft papers and white glue. Anyone can make it and let your creativity show, use any shape and design and decorate the glasses and once lit, they look simply superb!

I started my lens with this photograph ans the intro photo, but I wanted you all to enjoy the beauty, so here I am putting it again. Enjoy it.

BTW this lens was created as a part of RM Falls Session Lens Challenge and I am so proud to say that each and every photo used on this lens is mine and I am more proud to say that they are all designed and decorated by me.

Nice lens, enjoyed it, loved the beauty of all the glass work. But I do not think I will do it, my hands are a bit shakee for that kind of art, even having trouble taking photos.
Thanks for sharing. I would love a gift of one of those, maybe a suggestion to my family.
