Mole gopher control... It takes a lot of patience and persistence...
The picture above may seem kind of funny looking. That little varmint has 22 tentacles and is called a star nosed mole. They are only found in certain areas of the country.
He (or she) may look cute but they can extremely destructive (as you may well know).
Some pertinent information may give you an idea of how hard it is to get rid of these things. Cold weather doesn't slow them down at all. They are extremely adept at survival in all kinds of adverse conditions.
Moles have twice the hemoglobin of other mammals their size. That makes it easier for them to breath underground.
They may seem like a formidable opponent but diy mole control is basically figuring out what actually works. The mole hill that you see in the picture is an actual photograph that hasn't been altered in any way.
It's highly unlikely that the yard moles that you have are going to be nearly this ambitious. However, the average moles IS capable of digging 15 to 18 feet PER HOUR!
Can you imagine how much dirt they actually displace during the course of one day?

Is a wooden gopher and mole trap a better way to get rid of them?
If you do any research on the internet you will quickly see that all kinds of chemicals are available for killing moles. Unfortunately, they are not nearly as safe as the manufacturers claim. Many states won't even allow the products to be sold there. It gets extremely expensive when you try to dump these chemicals into all the burrows.
Another concern is the safety of being around these pesticides. They are absorbed into the skin very quickly. Keep in mind that they are man made poisons.
There is risk anytime to you introduce a chemical of any kind into the soil....
You can tell from the picture that moles move very quickly through the ground. Just looking at the anatomy of these things it's easy to see why stopping them in their tracks is very difficult.
A lot of people try poison bait. This is usually very ineffective as well because moles just plow further along eating grubs and worms as they go.
Mole trap instructions make the process of building your own so much easier. Slapping something together on your own may not get the results that you want.
Anyone with reasonable carpentry skills can put the right kind of traps together. You probably have a lot of the materials already anyway.
Are the only failproof mole traps the ones you buy?
not at all.....
There are approximately 50 or 60 different kinds of traps on the market. As pointed out earlier they can be extremely expensive if you need to buy quite a few. With female moles having a litter of 3 at a time in the spring, they can multiply very quickly. These little stinkers are on their own once they get to be about 5 weeks old. Guess what....they are on their merry little way digging more burrows just like mom and pop...
That's why organic gopher control is almost an art as much as a science.
You might think that filling in their holes would be the simple answer or pumping water in the tunnels. Others have heard that castor oil will do the trick if you pour it into the burrow. Unfortunately, it's just not that simple...
Moles are very adept at the change in food supply and conditions. They may jump to another tunnel or burrow at any time just to survive.
It sounds very discouraging but you can get rid of these pests... Knowing what you are doing is almost as important as spending more money on contraptions that promise great results.....
