Why Buy When You Can DIY? Great DIY Plans for Wind Generators

If you're considering wind power for a viable renewable energy source, than you'll be happy to know that you can harness the wind and save thousands doing it.

DIY wind generators work.

There is an indescribable feeling when you're saving the planet and minimizing your expenses too.

Wind power is abundant and clean, and you can access it's benefits for very little cost.
You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to reap the rewards of renewable energy.

I've Used Several DIY Wind Generator Plans

I've built 10 windmills from small ones to large ones. My smallest is made from PVC pipe and charges a marine battery for my electric fence. My much larger one supplements electricity for my house. You can go the route of creating an entire windmill, or use a guide to use already built motors.

Either way windmills are fun to make, and watch. The bigger ones can really pump out some electricity but take higher wind speeds to start, and a little more DIY knowhow to get going.

If you go the smaller already built motor route, make a couple of them. You can make them super cheap and you'll get great results. Not to mention their super easy to make. The ones where you make your own generator are tougher, but also more rewarding.

Smaller DIY Wind Generator Plans

Much Larger DIY Wind Generator Plans

If your looking for 400kwh plus wind generators you either need to stack up some small wind generators, like I mentioned before, or you should build a larger wind generator.

My favorite plans for larger wind generators are from Hugh Piggott. If your into permanent magnet generators I've made a Complete Permanent Magnet Generator Guide on my site. His wind generator plans are hands down the best for DIYing the full wind generator. You'll create the whole assembly from scratch.. If your not handy, I wouldn't recommend this approach. These bigger homemade wind generators also need to placed higher, to catch the most shear wind. So take tower placement into consideration.

Hugh Piggott & The Dans Know Their Stuff

The Homemade 1Kwh windmills made from scratch are from Homebrew

Hugh Piggot has a shop on a remote mountaintop in Scottland, there is no grid, and he runs his entire shop off of his windpower. His book is a good read, but it lacks in instructions for switching over to residential applications.

The Dans Have a great book Homebrew Wind Power is an excellent guide for building an entire high generating system from scratch.
