DIY Solar Power: Dream or Reality?

So you've read about the idea of having DIY solar power for your home.

But is it possible to do this at a price you can afford?

After all, those gigantic solar panels you see on television must cost an arm and a leg?

Well, yes, they do. But you don't need anything like as big to be able to get solar energy for at least some of your needs.

Learn how you can build your own solar power generator for as low as $100.

DIY Solar Panels: Make your own solar panels

You can easily buy ready made solar panels from places like Amazon and eBay. A lot of folks (like me!) who would find the idea of making their own solar panels daunting choose this option.

But it's actually surprisingly easy to make your own solar panels. There are simple to follow instructions available at sites like Solar-Power-DIY.com that make it a cinch to make your own solar panels.

Whichever route you choose, you could soon be in the envious position of being able to sell electricity back to your local power company.

The thought of getting your power company to pay you for a change is good!

Portable Solar Power - How To Go Off Grid

If you ever go camping or on outdoor trips, you'll know how easily your cell phone or flashlight battery runs down.

Taking a solar panel with you on your trip means that you can recharge your battery powered equipment easily, even if you're nowhere near a regular power supply.

You can use rechargeable batteries to store the power of the sun during the day - solar panels work, even if the sky is overcast - and then use the power you've stored later in the day.

This also scales up if you want to take your complete home "off grid" and wave goodbye to the power company's ever-rising bills forever.

Or you can stay on grid and send your surplus power back to your energy company and have them pay you for your surplus power.

Off Grid Power: How To Go Off Grid For Your Energy

If you're keen, you may want to go completely "off grid" for your power.

Using a combination of wind power and solar power, this is quite easy to do. That said, you may prefer to leave your meter connected so that you can sell any surplus power back to your supply company.

The reason for using both wind and solar power generators is that one often works when the other is being slow. Wind power has the extra benefit of working all day and night, whereas solar power (by definition) only works in daylight hours.

It will also depend on where you are in the country and how much sun you get in your area - the darker winter months are colder and aren't as sunny, which will obviously affect your decision.
