Make your own tv swivel arm wall mount extension

If your tv is too big for your articulating hinged bracket, here's a cheap way to extend it
I bought a $25 swivel mount on eBay instead. It is rated to carry as much as 33 pounds, and my tv weighs only 14 pounds.
The problem with these smaller sized swivel mounts isn't that they can't carry the weight of a larger tv - it's that the larger tv is too big to swivel with those short arms!
So I added a 14" plywood arm and a second "elbow" so my tv mount can point the tv in more directions. See below how I built the extension for my cheap swivel tv mount, using things I had in the house already. It's not hard to do it yourself.
Closeup of the box my swing arm came in.
I think these articulated swivel arms are mostly all made in the same place. They just put different names on them.
This is a VideoSecu ML10B. I thought I'd show you a big picture so you can see what you get.
You probably can't buy a mount this cheap in a local store.
Even Walmart asked $50 for its cheapest plasma tv swivel arm wall mount.
VideoSecu Articulating TV Wall Mount, Full Motion Tilt Swivel and Rotate Articulating Arm for Most 15" 17" 19" 20" 22" 24" 26" 27" LCD LED TV Monitor Flat Panel Screen A63
Amazon Price: $18.99 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
As I mentioned above, the problem with mounting a larger tv to this swivel arm mount isn't the weight, but the width of the tv. You can see how I've worked with that limitation!
I used 2 6" strap hinges to mount my flat screen tv extension arm
6" ZN HVY Strap Hinge

You can find fancier hinges but these are fine. Note that they do not come with screws. See below for my installation recommendation.
Reinforce a plywood mounting area - you're going to be putting a lot of stress on it!
I added 1/4" plywood inside the cabinet - mounted the shelf on it - and added this panel on the outside too.
Make your extension arm: I used 3/4" plywood
The cull bin at Lowes or Home Depot is a good place to find plywood scraps.
You may need need some 1/4" bolts
I used four of these
Stainless Steel 316 Hex Bolt, 3/8"-16, 2-1/4" Length (Pack of 5)
Amazon Price: $9.80 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
Be sure not to get CARRIAGE BOLTS because they have a square collar below the head which will not go into the hole in the hinge. Buy washers and nuts to fit your bolts.
I love deck screws: I used 1-5/8" length.
Depending on how you are installing, you may be able to use longer ones.
OMG FASTENMASTER FMGD158-75 "FASTENMASTER" DECK SCREW 1 5/8"
Amazon Price: $8.38 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
The longer your screws, the more stable your construction. However, you may not have room to screw in 2" screws (I didn't), or what you're screwing into may not be thick enough - you don't want the pointy ends poking out the other side! I used these in 2 of the four holes in my strap hinges on the side that hangs from the cabinet, and used them to screw the other end of the strap hinges into my composite plywood arm.
I used 1-5/8" screws to screw the purchased swivel mount to my homemade plywood extension arm.
View from behind - with strap hinges securely screwed in.
Finally I mounted the plywood extension arm to the cabinet with bolts and screws.
If you can screw into a stud, use a 3" screw. If you install into plywood, use bolts if possible.

I was able to "sit" the extension arm on my shelf, but you will probably need somebody to hold the extension arm for you (it's heavy!) while you mark the holes and drill for the bolts, or while you screw in the deck screws.
Notice that the heads of the bolts are on the inside of the cabinet - I didn't want long poky pieces coming into my shelf area (I'm going to keep sheets and pillowcases in the area where my huge old tv used to be).
Use washers on the inside, under the bolt heads, or your bolt heads will sink into the plywood.
7am on Sunday morning: I screwed that sucker to the cabinet!
Every single screw/bolt is taking some weight.
View of the tv, extended for viewing from bed!
My flatscreen tv, tilted so we can sit and watch from the other side of the room.
A final view of the extended tv.
It turns out, I have to extend the tv to open the drawer! Didn't think of that beforehand!
Any questions? Any comments? Come on, say hi!

- I bought a swivel mount online just like the one you showed (for the same reason - crazy prices at the stores) but didn't think about adding an extension. My screen is small enough that it works OK, but I've been thinking of getting a larger TV. When I do that, I think I'll be revisiting this lens. It looks like a great idea!
