DIY Woodworking - Why Bother?

Why would somebody want to get involved with DIY woodworking?  Let's think about that for a second.  If you have any wood-related projects around your house that just HAVE to get done, you only have a couple options as to how they'll get finished.

The first option is to pay somebody else to do the work for you.  This is the easy way, and there's nothing wrong with it IF you can afford it.  But not everyone can.

The second choice is to do the work yourself.  If you're on a strict budget, this is really your only feasible option.  It's going to take a little learning and some work on your part, but don't worry.  You'll save money over hiring the work out, and you just might have FUN doing the work!

Who Should Try DIY Woodworking?

It all comes down to DESIRE.

Doing your own woodworking jobs isn't recommended for everyone. If you've got the money required to pay for the work, and you don't have a lot of spare time (or desire) to work on something, you'd be better off hiring someone else.

If you ENJOY getting your hands dirty, and don't mind a little work, you'd have a BLAST tackling your own woodworking projects.

Not having the money to hire someone shouldn't be the only reason you decide to do it yourself. There are TONS of people out there who CAN afford to pay someone and don't because they WANT to do things themselves.

The DESIRE to do the job is the most important part because you'll save some money, and have fun doing the job at the same time.

If you've got the desire, Easy-Wood-Working.com will get you started on the right track!

What You Need For DIY Woodworking

Gotta have the right tools!

You're going to need a few different things before you start doing your own woodworking projects.

The first one has to do with your mindset. There has to be some level of motivation to do the work. Your only motivation could be that you want to save money, or you could actually WANT to do the job. Either way is fine.

Second, you'll need some basic tools. The tools needed is going to vary based on the project, but at the VERY least you should have basic carpenter tools (hammer, nails, screwdrivers, screws, tape measure, level, etc.).

Third, and most important, are your plans. After you decide on a project, you have to find detailed, easy to follow plans so you can complete that project. Trying to follow poorly written plans is like setting yourself up for failure (especially if you're new).

DIY Woodworking - How To Get Started

Here's how you can get off on the right foot.

You've decided that you want to work on things yourself. Congratulations! So what's the next step? How do you really get started with doing your own woodworking projects?

The first thing you should think about is the project you want to work on. The project usually (but not always) determines the tools you will need (beyond the basic tools mentioned above).

After you have a project in mind, and know what tools you'll need for the job, it's time to think about plans. Regardless of your experience, it is ALWAYS best to use woodworking plans that have clear, step by step instructions that are easy to follow.
