Hand Tools for DIY Woodworking

When collecting your stash of tools and supplies for diy woodworking, the first items are likely to be a good supply of hand tools. There are many available, and its sometimes difficult to know which ones you will get the most use out of and which ones you can do without. Start with the basics and add the frills later.

Block Plane

A block plane is a useful woodwork tool. It allows you to shave away a thin layer of wood with each stroke when you glide it over a flat surface. This implement is a simple, solid metallic block with a blade centered in the flat underside. As you apply it, the wood shavings eject out of the top, in a similar fashion to a pencil sharpener. Some woodworkers own two of these items. The larger one remains in the shop and the smaller one goes in the toolkit where it can be transported to project sites.

Chisel

These tools are among the most versatile of any woodwork hand tool. Chisels are used to carve woods into desired shapes. You can also use them to create joints, carve grooves and to finish off your woodwork projects. Although chisels are bulky and take up space, its a good idea to invest in a complete set for your shop. If you will be working at projects in locations other than the shop, you will need a small set of four to carry in your toolkit. A standard set of bevel edge chisels will serve the purpose well.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are an obvious addition to your woodworking supplies. Start with a couple of Philips head and flat-head screwdrivers.

Stanley Knife

The Stanley Knife is a brand name for a utility knife. The Stanley brand has been around for so long that people now refer to any type of utility knife as a Stanley knife. When choosing your utility knife, its best to avoid the ones with retractable blades and go with the kind that have the blade affixed with a screw.

Saws

A selection of good saws are an important addition to the workshop. Woodworkers recommend getting a regular hacksaw rather than a junior one, and also to get a coping saw. With a coping saw, its easy to cut intricate shapes.

If you work on larger woodworking projects frequently, then you might do well to invest in a powered saw.
