DIY Conservatories - The UK's Favourite DIY Home Improvement Project

When it comes to adding a conservatory to your home, the DIY route can be a very attractive option.

The main advantages of DIY conservatories are substantial cost savings and the sense of pride that can be experienced having completed the work yourself. There are many different ways of purchasing your new conservatory, most of which are covered in this article.

The Conservatory Project Options

DIY, Semi-DIY or Fully Fitted Conservatories?

There are many options available to you and the best one really depends on your budget and DIY ability.

If you opt for the fully DIY route, you will construct the base (a steel conservatory base is sometimes used, see video below) and install the conservatory yourself. This is the option that will carry the greatest cost savings.

Not keen on the building bit? Then you can get a local builder to construct the base and then install the conservatory yourself, this will also typically save a few thousand pounds compared to the fully fitted option.

So you want to save money on a new conservatory but can't be bothered with any DIY? Well, all you have to do is project-manage the thing yourself and that's easy because there's not that much to do.

The first step is to measure the space you have available and order your conservatory to your preferred sizes and specifications at which point you should be supplied with a conservatory base plan by the manufacturer. Be sure to buy direct from a manufacturer as this will result in far better value for your money.

The next step is to get a local builder (one that is recommended to you is best) to construct the base in accordance with the base plan supplied.

Once this has been done, your builder will need to make any adjustments to the sizes on the base plan if necessary (he may have worked to the nearest brick, and not the exact sizes on the plan) before you confirm to the conservatory supplier the exact manufacturing sizes and arrange delivery.

Finally, once your conservatory has been delivered, you can arrange for your builder to return and fit it for you.

It's as easy as that, and this option will typically still save you a couple of thousand pounds, so it's well worth the little organisation that is required.

DIY Conservatory Bases

Steel Conservatory Bases

Steel bases are becoming fairly popular for conservatories, especially for the DIY sector as they can be assembled and installed without building knowledge.

They produce less mess than the traditional concrete base and are far easier and quicker to construct, however the cost differences are minimal.

The video below demonstrates the basic concepts of steel bases for DIY conservatories.

Instabuild Conservatory Bases

Instabuild steel bases for conservatories are a strong, safe and solid base for all types of conservatories, and can be installed anywhere, even in the most difficult of locations. Instabuild bases also mean that installation can be completed in a matter of hours. Delivered in kit form enabling the conservatory construction to follow immediately.
