DIY Solar Powered Home - Is it the answer I was looking for?
Have you looked at your hydro bill and thought, 'What can I do to reduce this?'. If you are like me, you have made some changes (replacing incandescent bulbs with compact florescent, checked appliance ratings, hunted down Phantom Loads) and found some small reductions. Have you looked into Solar Powered Homes just to find that many solar power installers wanted an arm and a leg just to put in a basic grid-tied system. Have you asked the following questions : 'What if I do some or all of the work myself?' and 'Is a DIY Solar Powered Home even feasible?'
This article was written to help you decided if a DIY solar powered home is the way for you to go.

What is the Best Type of Solar Powered Home?
OFF-GRID is the ultimate dream of the Solar Powered Home but it is also the most expensive as you will need to pay for additonal systems to backup the solar power generation.
GRID-TIED solar powered homes power needs would be provided with solar energy and the power grid. This is the most common (and cheaper) option as the system feeds the solar electric power directly into the electric panel (via an inverter) thus reducing grid provided electricity. Any excess power can be stored in a battery bank (optional) to be used for power needs at night. An effiecent system will only need the grid as a backup for those rainy days or at night. A BIG bonus occurs when the solar powered home produces more electricity than you use, feeding the excess power back to the grid thus having the electric company reducing your bill or even paying you for the excess power.
Unless your home is some distance from the power grid, your best choice is the Grid-Tied solar powered home.
