The Pheebay competition for July ...
The response to the July competition idea has been somewhat underwhelming and the suggestion is it was probably unwise of me to run a "heavy duty" idea like the essay proposal as we enter the summer holidays period.
So - having thought about it we've decided to postpone July's competition until later in the year when it's cold and wet outside for most of us!

Debs shows a customer some of her miniatures.
12th walking stick with concealed dagger. OOAK..

Made from glass and a vintage glass bead this highly detailed little piece would make a fine addition for the doll's house gent. about town. Standing just over 3" tall, the blade can be removed from the hilt.

12th joint crushing screw...OOAK.....

Self explanatory really! You'll either know immediately where you'd put this or wonder why the heck has someone bothered to make one of these! Stands 1 7/82 tall, non-functioning..
12th scale food adulterator's kit...OOAK.....

Food adulteration has been around since the first food vendors operated; never more so than the Victorian era when the need to legislate against it became blindingly obvious.
Following the death of 20 people from the consumption of adulterated cough lozenges the Food Adulteration Act of 1860 was passed in an attempt to curb it's use. The effects were, however, limited and further legislation was required. Foods that were tampered with were either given colour or flavour "enhancers" or bulking agents ,which diluted the strength of the original product.

Powdered glass was added to sugar, mahogany shavings added to tea and red lead added to cheese to "liven" the colour. Debra has recreated here, her interpretation of what the unscrupulous grocer would have had in his shop.....probably well hidden behind the counter.
In a handcrafted box are a selection of glass and brass vials, all labelled with chemicals which were actually used at the time. There is also a little spoon, for your grocer to measure the correct amount! Although designed with a shop interior in mind the set would look equally good in any medical, chemist or alchemy scene.

The Gamekeeper's Shed
... on www.debjacksondesigns.com
12th scale game keepers shed and paraphernalia
This delightful piece was inspired by [Deb's] Granddad Jim. Although not a game keeper (he was a gardener) he had a keen sense for nature...with a rather no-nonsense approach! The shed is entirely handcrafted and populated by [Debra].
The outside is weathered and worn with moss on the roof and an algaeic tinge to the vertical wooden panels which make up the exterior. The door is fixed in place, as the front opens to access the interior. The sign on the door announces the shed as "Keeper's Rest",it is padlocked and bolted.
The interior is furnished with a large assortment of items. To the left is and aged desk and shelf, with worn stool. In the same corner is a little black, pot-bellied stove, whose pipe goes through the roof and can be seen from outside with a little rain cover. An opening leather strapped fishing creel stands under the desk and it's accompanying rod and fly case are by the stove and on the desk respectively.
Two shelves at the back hold a variety of items-2 poison bottles,3 traps of varying size, a clear bottle of liquid and 2 pots, an empty wooden box, a basket, pot and bottle and finally 2 rolls of wire. On the floor are 2 old metal containers of seed, a basket and a piece of net. The right hand side has a rusty man-trap, spherical rat trap and an oil lamp all hanging on a line of nails.
Next to the door is a rack of pipes and a wedding photograph. Further items on the desk are a functioning pen knife, candle and holder, another oil lamp, a boxed compass (which can be removed),wooden pot with 2 pieces of printed paper and finally in a tiny lidded box, the top removes to reveal the cheekiest, if not the bravest mouse ever!
Although this is being sold as a finished piece I like to think there is enough scope for someone to personalise it further.......perhaps a tea pot, cup and saucer? or a hat? or even a double barrelled shot-gun! All the items (except photo's and pipe rack) can be removed to rearrange as you wish.
Width 8 1/2",front height 5 1/2",height at the back 6 1/4" and depth 4 1/4".

12th medical/doctor,bleeding set,v.v. detailed.

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Bleeding a patient was, for hundreds of years, thought to cure all manner of ills. From teething children to headaches, the removal of blood (phlebotomy) was regarded as in invaluable tool in re-balancing the bodies' humours. This set consists of a lancet, which has a fully pivoting blade, a glass cup (which would be warmed, then placed onto the cut; the resulting vacuum created by the cooling glass would swiftly draw out the desired amount of blood........but if the "doctor" thought this amount insufficient more could be drawn using the pump! It could then be assessed and measured in the bowl.

12th scale writing set,Tudor,very detailed.
12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
The Tudor's were a relatively illiterate lot, those at the lower end of the social scale particularly so. Tutoring was for the children of wealthy merchants or titled families.....so if your Tudor 12th scale abode is from the lower classes this item would look out of place.
The upper classes, however, loved to correspond and this item is representative of that. Consisting of a darkly stained wooden writing tray, with "pewter" corners sit the obligatory items-a leather bound, fastening book with aged blank pages, "pewter" inkwell with quills and a sander (the absorbent used pre-blotting paper).
An aged scroll with wax seal, a delightful and very tiny box of sealing wax ...and the tiniest "pewter" seal, with wooden handle, just 1/2" long.

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
This exquisite little piece would look fabulous sitting on the desk, in the study of the master of the house. Consisting of a handcrafted wooden box just 7/16 " or 12 mm wide. Inside is a very tiny compass (non-functioning) which is just 7/32" or 6 mm wide..
12th Tudor unbilical cord and box-factual.
12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Tudor life was very hard, rich or poor illness was a constant battle, always threatening, with very little to be done to combat it. Folklore and herbal cures formed a high percentage of the armament available. Families would turn to whatever advice was available, much as we do today, in a desperate attempt to cure a sick member-especially a child.
One of these "cures" centred around the magical properties believed to be held by the umbilical cord. Following the birth the mother would be encouraged to keep the cord, in the belief that should the child succumb to a disease of the stomach application or ingestion of the saved item would heal the sick child.
With this in mind Deb has recreated such, which would make a wonderfully accurate and unique addition to a 12th scale Tudor house. The dark wooden box measuring just 7/8" or 2 cm long, has an intricate "pewter" decal, denoting it's importance and is "lined" with "lead".Inside the beautifully detailed leather drawstring bag is an extremely tiny withered cord.

Flower pressing Miss Amelia Worth's love token.

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
When Amelia first walked out with William James all her dreams came true. They had exchanged glances both in church and the village and were quite clearly, for all to see, smitten with each other.
Permission was obtained, by William from Amelia's father for them to become better acquainted. Their first meeting with the accompaniment of Amelia's aunt was a walk in the locality of Amelia's house. It took them past glorious summer fields of flowers and William, keen to make an impression stooped to pick a summer posy for a blushing Amelia. When the time came for William to go, they both knew this would be the first of many shared memories and as William strode home, feeling ten feet tall Amelia rushed to her room with the posy.
Keen to preserve this special day she set about pressing the flowers in one of the family's heavy books, whilst recalling each precious second of their walk and planning the sort of picture she would eventually make with the preserved flowers. It would have to be heart shaped, wouldn't it?
Entirely handcrafted and very highly detailed we have a wooden tray 2 1/8" (2.75cm) long, with silver feet and silver leaf shaped handles. Sitting on the tray is a the delightful posy,a leather book with several petals and leaves in place and a tiny pair of scissors. All the items are fixed in place.

17th or 18th C. art box-TINY PARFUMERIE-OOAK

For the12th scale miniature setting.
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Art boxes were very popular single room displays amongst wealthy collectors, often commissioned on a personal theme, mirroring a favourite shop or a special room in the house.
This one has a shiny, black finish with gold accents and inside a sweet little parfumerie. The interior is decorated with William Morris, Tom Tit design paper. On the back wall is the "doorway" into the shop, represented by 2 open brass, "diamond leaded doors" and one fixed closed in the centre.
The view outside is of the sky. Just inside the doors are a set of steps, on the top of which is a very tiny plant, standing in a gold pot. The floor is varnished wood and standing on it are a counter, with dishes of bath pearls, whilst on the opposite side is a "tall" cabinet, full of very, very tiny perfume bottles. Behind the counter, on the wall is a shelf with more tiny bottles. It is protected by an acetate front.

Exquisite 12th scale, Victorian artists' box OOAK

Unique handcrafted miniatures.
Made in the British Isles.
The upper class Victorians having so much spare time on their hands were particularly keen on their hobbies. Painting being one of the most popular. With this in mind Debra has created this exquisite piece.
Entirely handcrafted in wood and painted black, with elegant brass decals to two corners; it has decorative hinges and clasp-both functioning. The inside is compartmentalised to hold both brass tubes of "oil paints"( some of which have been removed from the box, for display purposes) and blocks of "watercolour".There is also a white mixing pallette, palette knife, jars of "turps" and "linseed oil" and a tiny brush, with bristles.
Width of item-1 3/8" or 34 mm and 1 1/8" deep or 28 mm.
Exquisite mourning brooch, with lock of hair +case
Unique handcrafted miniatures.
Made in the British Isles.
In Victorian times remembering a deceased loved one especially if you didn't have a portrait (and very few did!) was extremely difficult. It became common practise to remove a locked of the dead person's hair and to have it encapsulated into jewellery.
This extremely tiny little brooch has been created to follow this fashion for the 12th scale dolls house. It sits in it's velvet lined, handcrafted wooden box, when removed it has a faux clasp to the reverse. The "frame" of the brooch also echoes the fashion of the time, emulating the Whitby jet stone, so beloved in mourning jewelry. Width of box 9/16" or 19 mm, width of brooch 5/18 " or 9 mm.
The inocous poison box of Miss Maude Brown..OOAK
Unique handcrafted miniatures.
Made in the British Isles.
Born in 1846,in the town of Sandbach in Cheshire to the local rector and his good lady wife, Maude was thought to be a respectful ,well brought up young lady. The delightful exterior, however was in direct contrast to the internal evil. Maude did not suffer fools gladly. She promptly dispatched two suitors, one rather tiresome maid and an unfortunate tinker and knife sharpener who had the misfortune of calling at the family home.
The finger of suspicion pointed in Maude's direction on more than one occasion, but her social standing and expert concealment of her poison invariably led the local constabulary to look elsewhere for the perpetrator. Their suspicions eventually fell onto the kitchen maid, Mary Bourne, who was hanged for the crimes in 1871.Mary's cries can still be heard in the rectory kitchen to this day, on the anniversary of her arrest........and Maude can be seen smiling sweetly from her bedroom window as Mary is led away.
In this tiny little cloisonné box, which is just under 3/4" wide, there is an innocent looking set of manicure items- buffer, file and cuticle stick. When they and their supporting layer are removed they reveal a brass vial of arsenic, which can be removed from the box.
Although this story is from Debra's rather overactive imagination, poisoning was certainly a common choice for the Victorian murderer.!
Monaural stethoscope,doctor,medical,miniatureOOAK

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
The stethoscope, in it's mono form, was invented due to the reticence of a young doctor to listen to the chest of a female patient by placing his ear directly onto her chest. With childhood memories of sound enhancement, he completed the examination with a rolled stack of paper....noticing how vivid the previously muffled sounds had become with the cone he published his findings. Their use became widespread very soon after, from around 1820.
This piece,12th scale is a perfect addition to any late Georgian or Victorian medical scene. In an aged wooden, hinged and fastening box it fits snugly into it's indentations. Length of box-1 1/4" (33mm), width 3/8" (10mm) approximately.
12th scale Faberge style eggs x 3......OOAK......

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
This trio of mini delights would look delightful placed in a dolls' house. The tallest of the three stands 1 1/8" tall, is finished in "gold",the back is hinged and the inside hollow. The smallest at 5/8" is also hinged and hollow, which I suppose makes the first two trinket boxes. The third 6/8" tall and has an open front to display the very tiny Christmas tree inside.
12th scale ducking stool.Medieval/Tudor.OOAK.

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
An extremely common sight in Medieval and Tudor England ducking stools were used to determine the guilt of witches and later for punishment or correction.
Often seen as the female form of punishment (men tended to be associated more with the stocks) of particular use, so they say for the correcting of scolds and shrewish women......which I take to mean one with the "audacity" to have an opinion contrary to a man's! I think I could well have found myself sitting in one of these seats occasionally!

Some were fixed in situ others had wheels, so a choice of dunking water could be made...pond, river etc. This is based on the latter, although the wheels are fixed. At the end of the arm a seat was suspended with relevant restraints, this has "iron" pegs to which strips of leather are attached. The seat at the end has been made to look well worn and also has algae and a few strands of weed still attached.
When the arm is extended to full height it is 12" tall, the height of the arm support (the central piece from which the arm pivots is 7" high.)
Plague doctor's mask and stand. OOAK.

1144th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
These would have been a common sight in Europe in the 1600's.Worn by "doctor's" who attended the houses of plague victims.
The beak like end would have been stuffed with herbs and spices-unbelievably the mask would have afforded the wearer some protection against disease and the herbs against the terrible stench of bursting buboes!.
Inocuous appearance- poisoner's box. OOAK.

1144th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
A wolf in sheep's clothing ........ this perfectly innocent looking box makes the perfect hiding place for the 12th scale prisoner's potions!

The house itself has 2 incredibly detailed brass windows, opening shop door and display window. The roof simulates a seed pod with tendril, in keeping with the fairy theme.
Leading to the front door is a slightly elevated stone effect step, either side of which stand two very tiny topiaries in pots. The walls are covered with meandering greenery.
The reverse has been left open for access to the interior. Accommodation is on 2 floors; accessed by the most exquisite brass staircase.
The tasteful interior is lined with William Morris Tom Tit paper, which tones beautifully with the lemon colour of the exterior.
Downstairs are 2 shelves of perfume bottles attached to the walls, a feature display dome, which stands in the window. A tall display of perfume bottles and the shop counter can be removed.
Upstairs is furnished with a delightful little four poster bed, which even has 2 teeny tiny pillows.
Width of slate-4",width of house-2 1/4",height-3 1/4",height of bed 5/8".
12th scale Plague doctor's mask + effects. OOAK..

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Height of stand, including mask- 5 1/2",width-3 1/4".
This auction is for a truly fabulous piece,
totally handcrafted and unique.

These macabre masks were used certainly from the early 1600's but Debra can't find a start and stop point for their use.
The beak of the mask would have been hollow (this one is solid) and stuffed with various herbs to "clean" the bad air, which it was believed carried the disease.

Thick gauntlets and an amulet belt were also used; the belt amulets would have contained such weird and wonderful items as ground frog bones-these to were also believed to protect the wearer.

On the stand for the items are also 3 containers, which would have been storage vessels for the herbs and amulet contents.

To be factually correct a thick, oiled coat would also have been worn, but as I've said before I'm totally useless with a sewing needle! The term doctor is tad exaggerating, medicine at the time offered no hope at all to plague victims, the role of the doctor was more to confirm death and organise disposal of the bodies.

12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Pill rollers were an essential piece of equipment to any period chemist, apothecary or even doctor scene. They were used to make pills. The relevant ingredients would be gathered, mixed and rolled into a sausage shape. This would then be placed to the left of the brass bar on the tray (the tray is the "white" part. The roller part would then be placed to the left of this and be drawn to the right, pushing the mixture into grooves on the tray with the corresponding grooves on the roller.
At the end, the drawer would be opened slightly, for the resulting pills to fall into. The drawer could then be removed for the pills to be taken onto the next stage of the preparation process. In this entirely handcrafted and unique item the roller moves very neatly along the tray, the drawer is lined in black "velvet" and has a very highly detailed ring handle. Length-1 1/2" and width 1 1/8".
12th scale Tudor dandy's shoes...OOAK...
12th scale miniature
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Weren't the Tudors an intriguing lot? The fashion in footwear became more exaggerated toward the end of their period.
The slashed tops of the shoes had been a keenly followed fashion for years but then along came the pointed toe.
Wearing a pair as exaggerated as this would have been a major fashion statement, with some toes being so long and high, they actually required stays, affixed to the leg to hold the toe in place!
These are totally handcrafted in very soft green leather, with a toning trim around the base.Length-15/16".

Chatelaine shelf,incredible detail-vanity box.
12th scale miniature.
Handmade in The British Isles by Debra.
Width of shelf- 2" ,Length of chatelaine 2 1/2".
This beautiful and totally unique item would make a welcome addition to any 12th scale dolls' house. Although probably best suited to Victorian it could also fit an upper class Tudor house, due to the intricacy of the vanity box.The shelf has very pretty and highly detailed brass fretwork supports to both sides. Sitting on it there is a bible, leather covered with a brass cross on the front, the pages of which are blank.
Next is a tiny cloisonné box, a gift from the lady of the house to her favourite servant perhaps? Inside, in the lid is a selection of manicure items-all of which can be removed.
In the base is a cologne bottle, this too can be removed.
Next is a brass pin tray, with 3 pins and a tiny lidded brass vial (these are all stuck in place). The final item on the top is a candle holder with candle, which has a burned wick. The underside of the shelf has 2 pegs from which a highly detailed chatelaine hangs.
Chatelaines were belts worn from medieval times to Victorian. Some worn more for decorative effect, some for more practical reasons, this is a mix of the two. It is fastened by a solid silver clasp and the waist chain could be altered to fit a specific doll.
The items hanging from it are-a pretty little brass cross, religious items always very popular, a "jet" jewel hanging suggesting the person had been in mourning. Then we have 2 sweet little pomanders, regular bathing being a recent habit these would have been essential and finally two practical items. The first is an incredibly detailed pair of functioning brass scissors and the other a tiny eye glass.

Little Missy Mousie
This is Missy Mousie and, yes, that is a 5 pence piece she is standing on with her table.Caught here in the middle of icing the Christmas cake with the very fine knife in her hand, it's clear she has more baking planned from the bun tray, eggs etc on her table.
Standing on top of this 5p she is still only half an inch tall.
Missy Mousie is in my own private collection.
Unfortunately, it's really difficult to get a totally clear picture without a decent tripod so you'll have to forgive the quality of the images. If I can get clearer pics I will replace these.
I've included an ordinary 2nd class UK postage stamp in this picture as the standard British stamp may be more familiar to people outside the UK than our ridiculously small 5p pieces.

Doll's house Vapours of Fetid Graveyards ...OOAK.
