Why is it important to learn how to mix as a DJ?

If you want to learn how to be a dj or you're a DJ looking to improve your technique, it's imperative to improve your mixing and that's what my DJ mixing tips will do for you - if you follow them.

Mixing is an artform. It develops through learning and experience - putting it into practice. Music is fluid, changing, dynamic and it flows with the experience of the crowd. If you can get the dancefloor to move by ebbing and flowing the sounds of your music, building to a crescendo and then taking them back down, you have full control over their experience.

Focus on the listener

You're not playing for yourself. Always remember you're there to serve the audience, not the other way around. Think to yourself after every song, "What song would be the best to play to raise the energy I'm trying to create?"

Note that this doesn't mean you're constantly playing 200bpm beats. Having some slower and moodier tracks can elevate the energy also - it's all about what energy you're trying to cultivate in that environment. Is it a lounge? Then moodier, laid-back, down-tempo work best, with a sprinkle of some upbeat tracks to keep them guessing. Is it a high-energy packed dance floor? Songs that build up over time are best - big crowds definitely react to songs that blast their energy rollercoaster style.

Learn the technique

We won't be able to go over specifics of mixing techniques here as it's out of the scope of our conversation here (you can see some great dj mixing resources at the bottom of this article) - with that said, here are dj mixing tips that if you follow them will definitely improve your fundamental dj skills.
  1. Practice, practice, practice. And when you're practicing, make it REAL for yourself. Blast the music if possible. Pretend you have a crowd in front of you dancing like crazy. You have to practice in the same way you perform. If not, you'll lock up and get nervous in a real dj situation.
  2. Read about different turntables, mixers, and equipment. Again, you can take a look at some of the dj resources I recommend at the bottom for further instruction. It's all about researching on the internet, asking other pros, and going to the shops and testing them out. You have to get the right equipment for you, which leads to...
  3. Make sure you have the right equipment. You have to have at least a DECENT setup to practice and perform effectively. Don't assume the club or party will provide you with top-notch equipment. You have to have it on you and you need to practice with good equipment. This doesn't mean you need to have it all at once, but save up some money and reinvest into your dj equipment.
