Digital DJing On Your Computer

DJing from your computer

I used to DJ and promote nights in London. It had it's highs and lows but through it all I always had a passion for music.

Everybody loves music, of one style or another.
There are also many DJs out there of varying degrees - some great, some not so much.

Many people want to DJ but just can't afford to buy all the vinyl, including me. If I had the money, hell, I'd be out there every week grabbing new tunes! But, alas, my present lifestyle doesn't allow for that.

An alternative to being a vinyl DJ is mixing from your computer, be that a notebook or a desktop computer.
The only problem is, there is a lot of DJing software out there. So which one do you choose?
I have tried quite a few, so I will give you my opinion on them here.

Virtual DJ - This was the closest - visually - to a set of decks and a mixer. It also gave you a couple of turntables that you could use to spin up the tunes, backspin and hold a beat. Unfortunately, I found it woefully inaccurate at finding the beat points and also very hard to keep the tracks in sync, even when they should be. Eventually, regardless of the effects available, I gave up on VDJ.

Traktor - This was close to Virtual DJ visually. However, I found this really screwed up my music collection the very first time I used it, so this really did put me off. I tried to use it but found it too clunky and not nearly as responsive as I hoped it would be.

Reason -  Too complicated. This is for producing tunes, not for mixing.

Ableton Live -  Ableton is very similar to a lot of producing programs, like Reason and Cool Edit Pro's multi-track function. It can be used to DJ live, sometimes to great effect (search for DJ Sasha on Wikipedia for more details.) but I couldn't really get on with it. There were just too many functions.

So, this leads me to what I use. I wanted something that allowed me to lay down tracks in a very simple way. That I could do long mixes with. That would auto-adjust speeds between tracks if necessary. And something that would allow me to produce clean and high quality mixes I could give to my mates or have the confidence to use in a bar or club.

MixMeister Pro 6, in my opinion, is the best software to use. It works so well for me. It has great functionality and isn't too busy with extra buttons, dials, faders and racks of stuff you don't need.
You lay your tracks down, one after the other, in the main area and then match up the tracks in the intro and outro 'sprockets'. Once you have done this, your tracks will (most of the time) be seamlessly played one after the other. The only exception to this is if MixMeister cannot match up the beats effectively; this is rare but I found turning off the beat-matching option and doing it manually was far more accurate.
Whereas I struggled with Virtual DJ for over a year to try and get nailed, I managed to master MixMeister within a few months!
Now I'm happily creating albums that sound like they have been purchased in a music store. I post them regularly on a couple of websites and have got some great feedback from a lot of people.

I will provide more details about how to use MixMeister as soon as I can. But for now, if you want to have a look at this product (I'm not affiliated with them, by the way!) then go to their website.

I'm sure other people have had lots of success with the products I have mentioned above, I'd like to hear your thoughts in the new guest book below.

An Overview of Mixmeister Pro 6

This is an excellent introduction of MM Pro. I highly recommend you watch this.

It's a little difficult to see some of the things he's talking about, but you get the idea. I may record one at some point using an overlay application, rather than using a video camera.

Kudos to briansredd.

Nice lens. very informative. I hope you don't mind but I linked you lens to mine. Ive done a round up of my favourite Numark Dj controllers, and your explanation of the software is far better than I could have hoped to do. So if anyone from my lens needs more info on the software, i just send them your way.

Likewise, If anyone wants to know about the latest Numark controllers, head over to mine at www.squidoo.com/numark-dj-controllers

Hybridised.org

One of the best websites out there for music

This website is and awesome resource for breaks and progressive live & DJ sets, both Professional and amateur. Whenever I am craving a new mix for my bike rides, I will usually find something here well worth downloading.

Check it out: http://www.hybridized.org/ and definitely get involved with the forums as there are facilities for you to post your own mixes and get them judged.

My favourite DJ at the moment is James Warren. I'd highly recommend his Vapour Trail mix if you want to hear what classy mixing is all about.

BeatPort

Music Downloads

https://www.beatport.com/Beatport is a tremendous resource for anyone wanting to buy the latest tunes for any genre of electronic music.

It is a direct download site so once you've paid for the tunes you want you can download them immediately. Most of the tunes are pretty reasonable and they are ALWAYS top quality bitrate and they usually have some bloody good offers available.

This is the next best thing for any DJ that can't make it to a record and is willing to pay for their music.

Hard to Find Records

When finding old vinyl has got you tearing your hair out.

http://www.htfr.com/This shop, located in the U.K., is great. They sell all manner of DJ equipment; both new and old vinyl and plenty of other great stuff including some excellent t-shirts.

You can create a wishlist and add the tunes you have been looking for for millennium! You may have to wait a while, sometimes months, but as long as you get that tune what does that matter? :D

Such a great shop. I love these guys.

Soulseek

Free music download (P2P)

http://www.slsknet.org/I can't believe people were still using Limewire up till it's closure. I gave up on it years ago as it was so chock full of viruses and fake tunes that it became increasingly frustrating to try and find something.

In these modern times no one can deny they have done some illegal downloading, no one. Until music companies realise the real issue is their platform and not us at all, we will continue to find ways to download stuff for free and wait for their lawyers to catch up; or die.

So, if you're looking for a tune and can't seem to find it on Beatport, or anywhere else, or your too tight to pay for it (boo hiss!) then Soulseek is the best thing you can use.

iTunes

There, I said it

http://www.apple.com/au/itunes/The iTunes store has actually come on in leaps and bounds compared to what it used to be. Albeit, you still have to pay for your music, and obviously it helps if you own an Apple device to play it, but it's a great place to find some tunes.

I do have a couple of issues with iTunes though.

1. Just be sure you're getting the full tune and not a radio edit. If you want to mix with a tune then you won't get much to play with with a radio edit. A full version is much easier to work with I can tell you. Make sure you check Beatport first as the prices on iTunes can really take the piss sometimes.

2. They don't provide an MP3 download option. This is a big complaint of a lot of people but Apple are Apple and the iTunes Store stubbornly refuse to provide an option for this. Although now they provide the option to create an MP3 version in iTunes itself so that's ok.

YouTube

Some tunes to wet your appetite

You can find some great tunes posted on YouTube. In fact, sometimes this seems to be the ONLY place you can find certain tunes; especially some of the older ones I have been hunting for, for YEARS!

If you install the awesome Download Now addin for Firefox you can download tunes to your heart's content! :)
