Rank on the first page of Google - several times - for the keyword phrase "DK is a Street Performer."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nowadays, the internet is the place people go to find information. So businesses need to be on the first page of Google; otherwise, most people won't find them.
But being on the first page is not enough. There are a total of 10 listings on the first page of Google. Even on the first page, there is only a 10% chance that someone will click on a particular website.
So what internet marketers need to do nowadays is to rank MULTIPLE times on the first page of Google. With every listing, there is an increased chance for someone to find your business.
The "DK is a Street Performer" study reveals some powerful techniques for ranking on the first page. The first sites to rank in this case study were twitter profiles. Twitter is a social marketing medium. Tweeple's tweets - and bios came up on the first page of Google.
Another site that ranked quickly was YouTube. Additionally, digg, a site for social bookmarking, took just seconds to show up on the first page.
Successful participants are those who took action quickly and did a variety of things. For instance, those who first used twitter to describe their participation in the challenge were also the first ones to show up on the first page of Google.
However, one of these marketers quickly lost ranking when other marketers began adding pages to Google. For the most part, Google placed the newer sites first; however, after a while, sites that had been around longer ranked higher.
Another interesting thing was that rankings changed every few hours, or sometimes by the minute. A new web 2.0 site could suddenly sneak into the first page of Google, as soon as it became indexed. This happened often with diggs and with YouTube videos.
Blogs ranked really well too - especially blogs that had been around for a long time and had accumulated some alexa rankings. One blog post in particular showed up on the first page of Google only a few seconds after being submitted.
The "DK is a Street Performer" study is a classic example of the internet marketing world: Only a few people take action right away. Of those who take action, only a few have the right skills to rank on the first page of Google (out of hundreds of participants, only 4 or 5 actually ranked on the first 4 pages of Google). And of those who succeed in ranking, only a few keep going until they dominate.
The lesson? To market a business successfully on Google, you need skills, but you also need some initiative.
Currently, the challenge is still under way. To find out the current status of the case study, and to see which sites are currently ranking on the first page of Google, go to Google and type in the phrase: DK is a Street Performer.

Getting Your Business On The First Page of Google: The DK-is-a-Street-Performer Case Study
DK is a Street Performer - Read Below
Years ago, when you wanted your business to be accessible to thousands of people, you would pay a monthly fee to have it listed - and featured - in the Yellow Pages. Today, the number one thing that you want as a business owner is to get your website on the first page of Google.
SEO experts are making a killing online. They are paid hundreds of dollars every month to help clients bring their websites to the top of the search engines. However, most SEO experts will only help you with one thing - bringing your already-existing website to page one. What this means is that consumers have a 10% chance of clicking into your website.
While 10% is certainly better than the 0% you get by being on the second or third page of Google search), it still leaves something to be desired. Consider the full-page color ads that some businesses used to place in the Yellow Pages. The bigger the ad, the more likely they were to get customers. They were essentially taking over the search engine of the times.
The "DK is a Street Performer" study shows something new - something unheard of. Instead of bringing just one website to the top of the search engines, certain marketers are now able to bring MULTIPLE sites for one business to the top of the search engines - thereby increasing the chance that a consumer seeking the product will click on their site.
If one site on the first page of Google means a 10% chance of getting a new customer, two sites means 20%, three sites means 40% - and if you rank as high as Liane Carmi did during the dk-is-a-street-performer contest - you could even go up to an 82% chance. At one point in the contest, Ms. Carmi had nine out of 11 listings on the first page of Google.
Google updates all the time, and less recent sites tend to lose their rankings. This is especially true with news articles and videos. However, there are certain tricks that knowledgeable marketers employ to keep certain websites at the top, and Ms. Carmi seems to have mastered this skill.
During a recent interview, Ms. Carmi was asked about the challenge, and what has allowed her to rank so well. "You have to take action, and keep taking action," she replied. "The winner is not the first person to do something - it's the first person to do something, and keep doing it consistently even when everyone else has stopped."
Ms. Carmi also offered this bit of advice for businesses who would like to have their websites take over the search engines: "Find an online marketer who has some experience with difficult niche markets. This is the type of marketer who can help you get on the first page of Google. Also, don't forget to have someone look at your landing page, and make sure you are building a database. Traffic means nothing if you cannot convert the visitors into customers at some point."
