The Benefits of Training

If you are like most people, you are extremely busy. Some days, there just doesn't seem like enough hours to take care of yourself, let alone a dog! But, the time that you spend training your dog will reward you and your relationship for many, many years to come.

There are five main benefits of training:

It builds a relationship.
It corrects behavioral problems.
It stimulates intellect.
It encourages inclusion.
It saves time.

Just imagine!

.....a dog that's a pleasure to have around!

Imagine having a dog that is a pleasure to have inside the house at all times, that walks well on a lead, that's  gentle with children and is really your best friend without costing a heap of money for dog trainers and dog training books and audios.

Imagine you come home from a busy day and your dog greets you at the door or in the backyard without literally knocking you off your feet.

You can relax when guests come over and don't have to lock up your "best friend" for fear of guests  being jumped on or  "licked to death".

Being a dog lover you might not mind the odd lick from your doggies (me too) but not everyone else shares that desire do they!

A Trained Dog is a Happy Dog

Positive and negative reinforcement

It's not necessarily what you think!

Positive reinforcement: adding something to increase a certain behavior or response.
Example: anything your dogs loves, such as a treat, a special toy or an ear-rub. Giving the dog a treat for sitting in order to increase the probability that the dog will sit again is how positive reinforcement works.

Positive punishment: adding of an negative stimulus to decrease a certain behavior or response.
Example: A sharp verbal reprimand when your dog pulls too hard on her leash. You've added the sharp pull on the lead, to decrease your dog's tendency to wander all over on a walk. You've added the sharp pull to decrease pulling on the leash.

Negative reinforcement: taking away a negative stimulus to increase certain behavior or response.
Example: This is NOT trying to get the dog to "avoid" a behavior by punishing them for it. It's helping your dog associate negative behaviour with a negative result. A good example is teaching your dog to heal. Heeling is usually taught by giving the dog a sharp correction when he walks anywhere except in heel position. Walking in heel position increases, because that is the only "safe" place-because the threat of correction is removed by walking there.

Negative punishment (omission training): taking away of a positive stimulus to decrease a certain behavior.
Example: Your dog whines and barks when you go near his biscuit jar. You go to the jar, but only give him a cookie when he's stopped barking. Another example is your dog jumps on you to get attention. By turning your back or leaving the room, you apply negative punishment by removing the attention he wants.

"I would like to highly recommend your DIY Dog Training Package because it has proven to be just the thing for my 3 Dogs. My daughter has 2 large dogs and I recently acquired a 2 year old Bichon Frise. I was having a terrible time with my daughter's dogs fighting with the new addition to the family. Your guidance in doing those few simple things has made such a dramatic improvement already."

"Although Sharda is not a professional dog trainer herself her well researched book provides her readers with a great common sense approach to dog training."
The Article Channel: Pets

"You will find helpful information on how to deal with separation anxiety, running away, problems walking on a leash, and even how to deal with a finicky eater. Many of these issues can lead to a very unhappy home for both you and your pet, and with enough aggravation, may lead to you wanting to get rid of your pet.
