Do Kids Watch Too Much TV?

Here's What I Think About the Question, "Do Kids Watch Too Much TV?"

So, do kids watch too much TV? I think so.

I'm not totally against TV. I think that a small amount can be beneficial. But without question, a lot of kids watch way too much of it! Most statistics show that kids watch between 2 and 4 hours of TV a day, depending on their age, and that totals about 2 months of solid TV-watching in a year. That's disgusting to me! There are so many more beneficial things that kids could be doing like reading or playing outside!

Proponents of TV watching say that TV can be educational. They believe that it promotes cultural awareness, knowledge of world events and intelligence. They disagree that it hinders social interaction and they believe that educational programs are a great way to learn. They sometimes say that TV offers a means of stress relief.

I think that learning and intelligence is much more effective through other means like books, interactive games, discussions, hands-on activities and being out in the world. I think that there's too much on the TV that makes "idiot box" a valid term for it! I also think that it is too easily used as a babysitter - - it's much easier to plop a kid in front of the TV, or allow them to watch TV, rather than plan or provide other activities. As far as stress relief is concerned, I'm sure we could teach our kids to draw or write or build snowmen to relieve stress, rather than stick themselves in front of the TV.

sana says:

no, they must not watch too much TV, The point to make them engaged in other activities like blocks_making or reading some stories etc are more valid..... actually they are too young to understand the mature concepts behind the screen.....

Ajmal Ramankhan says:

I say that children between the age of 3-10 watch more TV than a boy or girl above the age 12. this maybe because once a child gets into secondary school, his or her focus most probably on his school

MeltedRachel says:

Yes definitely! I remember babysitting some kids a few years back and they were watching the same old cartoons because they were what was on TV at the time and they could tell me exactly what was going to happen in each show - it's so sad, they could have been learning something new or exploring outside but they just sat down in front of the TV because it was a habit.

unicornchef says:
