Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid

Welcome to my Holiday Gift Guide!

The year was 1984 and I was probably wearing a Duran Duran t-shirt to school when I first heard Do They Know It's Christmas? on MTV in the Social Center of our school. We got to watch videos at lunch which was very cool. I was glued to the screen because I needed to see John Taylor and Simon LeBon. I was 14 so that was perfectly acceptable!

Fast forward to 2010 and I still love the song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. I've always been a big fan of Bob Geldof and am still impressed that he pulled together the members of Band Aid. Some of my favorites (in addition to Duran Duran) were Bono, George Michael, David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Boy George. I really wanted to be in that room.

But of course the real reason for the song was to raise money for the 1984-1985 famine in Ethiopia....and that it did, it sold more than 3.5 million copies!

What a memory - hard to believe that when I read the book '1984', the year seemed a long way in the future. It's now a loooong way in the past - how strange is time?

One of my all time favorite Christmas songs. So many amazing artists were featured on this amazing collaboration. Probably liked the Live Aid version with Freddie Mercury. Hard to believe that Bono wasn't known well at the time.

Gosh, I have to agree with Sylvia! I love both Sting and Bono. But I chose Bono, 'cuz I think I chose Sting in somebody else's poll that included him.
