Do we eat spiders in our sleep?

Ranked #2,151 in Education, #51,672 overall | Donates to A Broader View Volunteers Corp

The burning answer is..

Wait! I can't give it away yet! Why? Because the answer to eating a spider or spiders while sleeping is not that simple!

To be honest I was confused myself when I first heard that we eat spiders in our sleep. Never thought about such a thing...

Now I don't want you to experience the same spider confusion I had so I did some research and this page on do we swallow or eat spiders while sleeping is what I came up with.

Hope after this you can get some sleep! Does that mean we eat spiders? I didn't say so! Cheers!

Hmm. Brenda Gilmore, an expert in spider bites and arachnids in general, shared her knowledge in an interview about people and whether they eat spiders or whether we don't and it is based on this spider eating interview that I gathered my info. Read on for more info..

This lens was designed to support charity!

Thank you to all who nominated my spider lens for charity in the sunshine squidoo competition. Although my lens did not get in just wanted you to know I appreciated all your efforts

There are so many charities out there but being a writer for squidoo this is the one I have chosen - why? It's not because I think Squidoo is better than anyone else but like spiders who are admirable for their unique web spinning ability so is squidoo! I like to call Squidoo the mother of charities! I love writing for them and I love even more that they have teamed up with a whole bunch of charities not just one or two! Something to be admired for!

You can see all these charities or at least a great number of these charities and read some charity lenses here at Sunshine Award Nominations by Leansmaster OhMe who showcases a lot of other lensmasters charity work here along with numerous charities.

For the official sunshine award results see squidoo's blog here If you nominate my lens to charity and I win, this lens get $99 dollars which goes to charity! The writer of the lense also gets $99 which they can decide to keep for them self or give away to charity! Nominations ends on the 27th August 2010!

The Squidoo Charity Fund has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. Thanks to the Squidoo community, we've built schools in Cambodia, given underprivileged classrooms computers and software, funded important reseach against Juvenile Diabetes

Um.. maybe you should be freaking!!

If you have killed spiders in your sleep and elsewhere! Even in your dream?

Ghost spiders 2 shirt
"I wonder if all those spiders I have killed have ghosts" tee shirt!

What if all the spiders you killed have ghosts? Ever had a dream of eating a spider? That can be considered a ghost! To dream you eat a spider or dream that a spider is in your mouth, is an indication that you are in control over a situation. You are not fearful of exerting your dominance in a relationship.

But what about your relationship to this lens? Would you like to give a donation? Come on Show me how you dominate your money when it comes to charity! The ghosts won't haunt you. Do something good for halloween! Donate something to charity and maybe the spider ghosts - if they exist - will forgive you and bug off. Okay I can't convince you that they do exist - the ghosts - I mean..so Just donate anyway...thanks

Fact: Spiders do climb into our beds at night!

But do people eat them? Have you swallowed one?

Eating spiders in your sleep shirt

It's true! Spiders do climb out of their hiding homes at night to come out for food. These arachnids may find themselves onto your bed and on top of you. A spider may crawl on you at night, find its way under your covers or onto your face. But inside your mouth? Well you would probably get bitten by the time that happens depending on the spider!

How do they get under your covers? Spiders are able to squeeze through tiny holes and spaces. A spider may find its way under your cover while you are sleeping because of its anatomy make up. And you may roll over them in your sleep as most people I know who do while sleeping.

Facts show that it is improbable that a brown recluse spider bites a human while sleeping, even in the case when the individual rolls over in his bed. Your best bet is that you will kill the arachnid simply due to your body weight before the spider has an opportunity to defend itself.

Truth: We Do eat spiders in our sleep!

A spider may find its way into your mouth but..

So the answer to the question "do we eat spider while sleeping" is true! To think that a spider may find its way into people mouth while they sleep is one issue, bites is another issue and eating or swallowing them is the major issue!

Spiders like to hunt at night and they like dark holes and places too. Your mouth can become the perfect place for hiding if you are sleeping with it wide open. Now even if this is somewhat true there are some details to take into consideration.

Let's begin with the fact that a mouth is wet! Spiders don't like wet places, they either die if tiny or they escape. Another point: We are breathing hot air! Spiders are smart enough to know that such a place - the hole in your face - is no way near a safe hiding spot. Also one more point. Inside your mouth, the tongue especially, is highly sensitive, so even though you may be sleeping, anything like a spider or other bug crawling will wake you up! Even people who sleep strongly and don't happen to wake up if a spider is crawling will at least push away the spider using the hands or the tongue.

According to scientists we breathe in spiders by the dozens. They are microscopic and very tiny BABIES. That makes sense. Eating a spider is not impossible if its tiny - fact is they walk so lightly you wont feel the hairless type ones.

No, I'm not really worried - I do think I would wake up if I had a spider in my mouth. If I couldn't see it or feel it, I don't worry about it.
  • jbhumbug Oct 25, 2011 @ 7:29 am | delete
very interesting and disturbing. luckily for me i live in the uk so no deadly ones! just fast and fat house spiders. thanks for sharing x
  • KANEsUgAr May 30, 2011 @ 5:53 pm | delete
    Not really,
  • scss May 28, 2011 @ 3:37 am | delete
Yep I'm sure I eat some, and they eat me too! I have the proof of their munching away on me for a midnight snack. I'm happy to leave the non toxic ones alone, as I figure they help to keep down the deadly Red Back and WhiteTail spiders that are around my home and garden. The bigger and hairier the spider is, the happier I am that they are patrolling their territory for me!

  • lasertek Oct 21, 2010 @ 8:02 pm | delete
This got me thinking. Could this be true? How many spiders have I eaten? The thought of it is disturbing.
  • spunkyduckling Oct 22, 2010 @ 6:03 am | delete
Yes it can be extremely disturbing but don't let it consume your sleep lol.
  • WildFacesGallery Oct 20, 2010 @ 6:13 pm | delete
Okay totally creeped out. I was one of the unfortunate ones to be bitten by a spider while I slept and it swelled and got all purple AND required a doctor visit with meds to make it better. I still a have a bruise looking spot where it happened. Urgh. And now I have to worry about eating them. Had lots 'o fun looking through your lens though. :)
  • spunkyduckling Oct 22, 2010 @ 6:02 am | delete
That must have been scary! Yikes! Can't imagine anyone who has been bitten by a spider - be it brown recluse, a baby one or large black one or some other to be able to enjoy this lens. Way to go. Glad now things are okay and over with. Hopefully you will never get bitten by one again! Arrgghhh just thinking about it makes my bones tremble.
  • rachsue Oct 5, 2010 @ 12:25 pm | delete
Ok, now in all truth, I dont think I wanted to know that. BUt what a very funny and humorous lens. This is what kept me reading right to the end. Congrats on your first day blessing
  • spunkyduckling Oct 5, 2010 @ 1:22 pm | delete
Thank you! Yay!! i can do a little happy dance..shh!! no spiders will be joining me in my dance and hopefully in my sleep ;0
  • jgelien Oct 5, 2010 @ 10:54 am | delete
Oh great, take one of my biggest fears and run with it! Well, I'm off to buy a hospital mask to sleep in.
  • spunkyduckling Oct 5, 2010 @ 11:41 am | delete
So very funny! Aww... glad to know i am not the only one!
  • CDT Sep 29, 2010 @ 7:37 am | delete
Yes I am! I have no idea why I (and so many others) find spiders so unsettling - after all I don't freak out about other creepy crawlies so why the fear of spiders? The thought of eating one was seriously disturbing...but now you tell me that I'm unlikely to eat one - but I may breathe in lots of little ones instead! That's not reassuring!! A very enjoyable lens though and I'm giving it my SquidAngel blessing :)
  • spunkyduckling Sep 30, 2010 @ 2:35 pm | delete
Reading your comment was so much fun! Wow! A squid blessing! I mean another surprise squid blessing. Thanks a million. Yay! And thank you for visiting.

hopefull they at least bring some protein to the table :-)
  • spunkyduckling Sep 24, 2010 @ 12:06 pm | delete
That sounds exciting! A new way to get proteins by sleeping. Hmm.. Strange but I never noticed tiny baby spiders on my bed until of late..Thanks for the funny comment.

More likely to swallow a fly than a spider. Fun lens and I love learning about spiders. Come on over to my lens a> and have some more fun.

I'll be happy to check out your lens sometime -- I have to get my computer working first -- :( but thanks for stopping by.

We like spiders at our house. They're all over the garden. Spiders in the house aren't much of a problem because of our cats. I hope I don't eat them in my sleep, but you never know.
  • spunkyduckling Sep 8, 2010 @ 5:39 pm | delete
Love the new pic Kim. Aww.. I am afraid of spiders and too many time they come from outside and crawl on me. I don't mind the baby ones but anything bigger got to go or else I will not be able to sleep. Thanks for dropping by.
  • charlino Aug 25, 2010 @ 10:59 pm | delete
The only reason I hate spiders is because when I was little I woke up with one crawling on me. Now I have to worry about eating the things in my sleep. This is not good, but this is a great lens.
  • spunkyduckling Aug 26, 2010 @ 9:23 am | delete
Thank you for the visit charlino. Don't worry too much about eating spiders in your sleep but rather more about them crawling on you. They crawl on me too. Imagine getting in your ears or nose! Unless you sleep with your mouth open it's unlikely they will find themselves in there.
  • blackwidow Aug 22, 2010 @ 9:20 am | delete

Just in time for the halloween won't you say sandy? Thank you for stopping by and I am laughing..Couldn't have imagined who would leave me a comment like that. Now I know it had to be a sandy spider!

Ooh, creepy! Actually, I kind of like spiders though I definitely don't want to eat any! :) Best of luck with the Sunshine Awards!

I guess if I were to swallow a spider, it might shut me up from talking in my sleep (according to my wife) LOL! Guess it wouldn't be too bad if flushed down with a nice Chianti ;)

    *Blessed* and nominated :)

Oh my gosh an angel? Thanks! I don't know this face and so many others but the minute I saw yours i knew there was something special. It has to be the avatar. Thank you for this lovely surprise or should I say two? Yippy!

  • spunkyduckling Aug 21, 2010 @ 3:27 pm | delete
Ha! Yuck! this reminds me of Spider Dinny Soup. Humor is good and since spiders probably taste bad, chocolate will help cover some of the prickliness..

Goodness, I hope we don't eat spiders in our sleep.,,yuck that would so gross! Definitely a fun Halloween lens that I would love to see get a Sunshine Award. ~ Thumbs-up! :)

  • spunkyduckling Aug 21, 2010 @ 3:11 pm | delete
Well at least I have company because I hate spiders too and have a hard time sleeping even before this! And it's due to spiders. At one time one was crawling on my face.
When i flung it off it came back some moments later.
Hope things are looking up. :)
