Do You Love Trees?

In Praise of Trees Throughout the Seasons
I love to take photos of the same tree in different seasons and light.
Even the half-dead silver birch in my neighbours' garden looks beautiful - here it is at sunset on 18th February 2008.
The purpose of this web page is to celebrate trees and to entertain you with photographs, a quiz, a poll, a traditional poem to remind you which are the best logs to burn, some music and blogs.

We Start With a Series of Five Photographs (incuding the Intro photo above) of the Same Silver Birch over a period of Three year
It looks very different as the seasons and light change
And wait for a big surprise
when you see
the Fifth and Final Silver Birch photo
Dying Leaves on The Same Silver Birch
A very grey day - 5th December 2007
The tree looked as though it was dying, but 4 years later, it is still there, still alive
Snow Laden Silver birch tree April 2008
It was a very cold Spring that year
Eclipse of Moon with Silver Birch
11th January 2009
Same tree again, different mood.
It was too dark to take a good photo, but the moon shining through the trees was spectacular
The Most Recent Photo of the Silver Birch
Blown Down by the Wind in June 2011
What a sad sight.
It wasn't even a very strong wind, but the tree was already dying, and just snapped.

Now Three Photos of Trees in our Local Park
I love the colours and shapes
Autumn Tree in Durnsford Park, London
19 October 2007
Autumn colours in Autumn sunlight to show them at their best
Snow - Oak trees in Durnsford Park
6th April 2008 - Winter and Spring embraced each other and Winter didn't want to leave
Believe it or not, this is a colour photo, not black and white - there was just no colour about that day
Oak tree in Durnsford Park 19th October 2007
The same oak tree as the oak tree above on the far right
Oak trees have such a satisfying shape
Two Photos of the View Beyond My Back Garden
Silver Birch
25th January 2007
This is the lovely view from my back garden

Same Silver Birch Trees, Helicopter Circling!*
24th December 2008

* This is the first and last time in 50 years that I have seen a helicopter outside my back garden - never did find out why it was there
Take This Poll About Mango Trees
See How You Measure Up Against Other Pollsters

Me and my friends having fun up a mango tree
in Ndola, Zambia (or Northern Rhodesia as it was then) -
sixty years ago!
Where are they now, I wonder?
-
And now a couple of random photos of trees
Pine Trees in St Konstantine, Bulgaria
The Bulgarians do love their trees
This is the Hotel Koral Swimming Pool in St Konstantine, surrounded by pine trees. The surroundings are so beautiful that I have stayed there several times with my family - highly recommended!
A Street of Pollarded Trees at Dusk
London, 4th April 2010
Not a pretty sight, but somehow fascinating. Can you see the sunlight reflected in the windows at the end of the street?

Take This Quiz About Trees and Wood
It's fairly easy
All about Wood
and Trees and
that sort of thing
How Did You Do in the Quiz?
No good keeping it a secret, especially if you did well
Let's have your comments or objections here. By the way, someone has already pointed out that Americans and Australians can say "can't see the wood for the forest", whereas the English don't have that option, and it has to be "can't see the wood for the trees".

- I didn't do so well either (50%), but do love trees, just to see then in different seasons or to draw and paint them, and of course take pictures.

Logs to Burn - A Clever Traditional Poem
Learn which wood makes the best fuel
You might want to keep this
LOGS TO BURN
Logs to burn, logs to burn,
Logs to save the coal a turn.
Here's a word to make you wise
When you hear the woodman's cries.
Never heed his usual tale,
That he has good logs for sale,
But read these lines and really learn,
The proper kind of logs to burn.
Oak logs will warm you well
If they're old and dry.
Larch logs and pine wood smell
But the sparks will fly.
Beech logs for Christmas time,
Yew logs heat well.
Scotch logs it is a crime
For anyone to sell.
Birch logs will burn too fast,
Chestnut scarce at all,
Hawthorn logs are good to last
If you cut them in the fall.
Holly logs will burn like wax,
You should burn them green,
Elm logs like smouldering flax,
No flame to be seen.
Pear logs and Apple logs,
They will scent your room.
Cherry logs across the dogs
Smell like flowers in bloom.
But Ash logs, all smooth and grey,
Burn them green or old;
Buy up all that come your way,
They're worth their weight in gold.

There are even some songs about Wood on YouTube

- Enjoyed your lens as I love trees, also. I like how you photographed the same tree in different seasons... different moods. Perhaps that helicopter was checking out reports of a suspicious woman photographing trees! Ha. Nicely done.
