Do you Really Need Travel Insurance?

Do You Really Need Travel Insurance?
Have you read the News? A tour operator in Great Britain, Goldtrail, went bankrupt on July 16, 2010 leaving approximately 50,000 Travelers affected.
Many of these travelers had no Travel Insurance or Trip Cancellation Insurance which means that they either have to lose the money they paid for their vacations or, at best, pay again for any Hotels and Resorts that they had paid for in advance. They could have avoided much of the additional, if not all, by simply purchasing a good Travel Insurance or Trip Cancellation policy.
If you look at all of the things that have affected travelers so far this year you could come to the conclusion that it is foolish to plan and pay for a vacation or expensive trip without also purchasing a good Travel Insurance or Trip Cancellation plan.
There have been volcanic eruptions which delayed hundreds of thousands of travelers last April. The delay affected travel throughout much of the world and the cost to the stranded travelers was enormous.
Then there was the earthquake which affected travelers to and from Haiti. Of course the greatest impact of that earthquake was the more than 200,000 who died or simply vanished.
In Chile last February was one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded which disrupted travel to and from Chile for a week or so and displaced approximately 1.5 million Chileans. I know personally how bad that earthquake was because I was in Chile when it happened. Believe me when I tell you that I never want to be in another earthquake like that.
This event along with other events like the recent Volcano eruption, the Earthquakes in Haiti and Chile recently should be a warning to anyone traveling that they really do need Trip Insurance or Travel Insurance. Without it your investment in your trip is most likely a total loss.
If all of the affected travelers would have had a good Trip Insurance or Travel Insurance plan they would have saved themselves a lot of their hard earned money. Right?
Their Trip Insurance would have included a Trip Cancellation/Interruption Benefit which would have covered the cost of their pre-paid expenses like, airline tickets and any pre-paid hotel expenses. That alone would have been worth the price of their Trip Insurance plan.
What about the Travel Delay caused by delayed flights? Well much of it would have been covered, usually up to $500 or so, a great Benefit to have when catastrophes happen.
There are, of course, many other benefits in good Travel Insurance and Trip Insurance plans but these two benefits alone would have been well worth the money.
What if you were one of the people traveling when one of these horrendous events happened and you had decided that it wasn't worth the 4% or so to purchase the Trip Insurance?
How would you feel?
How would your Family feel?
Think about it.

Is Travel Insurance Confusing to You?
W K Vandiver
I have found that the best way to make travel insurance simple is to begin by breaking it down into the various types of what most people think of when considering Travel Insurance.
Basic types of travel insurance:
-Trip/Cancellation Insurance
-Emergency Evacuation Insurance
-Travel Medical Insurance
First let's look at Trip/Cancellation Insurance. This is what most people think of when you say Travel Insurance, it will pay up to some maximum amount if you trip is cancelled or interrupted for a specified reason plus there are normally quite a few other very valuable benefits on good Trip/Cancellation Insurance policies.
Here are some of the things which could be covered:
-Trip Cancellation/Interruption: The covered reasons for a trip cancellation/interruption will be pretty specific and if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for one of the covered reasons you will be reimbursed, if not, you will not be reimbursed. Among the normal covered reasons for cancellation or interruption include; emergency illness, injury or death, financial default of your travel supplier, terrorist incident, the list can go on and on so it's important for you to read the Benefits section of the policy to determine exactly what he covered reasons are.
-Travel Delay: pays for a number of reasons also, among them are; travel supplier delay, natural disaster, medical quarantine and as before there can be any number of reasons.
-Baggage and Personal Possessions: usually includes damage to, loss of or theft of your checked or stored baggage by a common carrier or while stored with your hotel.
-Baggage Delay
-Emergency Medical/Dental expenses
- Emergency Medical Evacuation/Repatriation is used when there is an emergency medical incident, then usually the policy will pay reasonable expenses for evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility. It also usually pays for reasonable expenses when you are confined in a medial facility.
-Emergency Reunion or Return of Mortal Remains is a benefit we all hope you will never have to use but is a really great benefit when needed. It covers things like: return of minor children or grandchildren, transportation and lodging for family members, etc. Be sure to look at the benefits of your policy to see exactly what is covered.
Common Carrier Accidental Death and Dismemberment
Again let me say read the Benefits section of the Trip/Cancellation Insurance plan you are considering as the complete list of benefits and exclusions should be listed there. Each Trip/Cancellation Insurance policy has slightly different benefits and the cost will vary from company to company. But keep in mind that cheaper is not always better.
Most plans are available with different levels of benefits; basic, normal and the highest level of coverage. The cost of trip cancellation insurance varies depending on the company issuing the policy as well as the benefit level. Generally it is from 4% to 10% of the cost of your trip. Usually there is a minimum trip cost (for example $500).
So, to sum it all up, if you and a companion are going on a trip and the total cost is $2000 each, your Trip/Cancellation Insurance cost should be from $160 to $400 depending on what your ages are.
Well, that's about it for Trip/Cancellation Insurance, next we'll take a look at another type of Travel Insurance called Emergency Evacuation Insurance.

30 Hurt During Turbulent Flight
During a routine flight from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles a United Airlines flight hit severe turbulence over Kansas last Tuesday, Jusy 20. 30 people were hurt, 1 woman was so violently thrown out of her seat that she left a crack on the side of the cabin. 26 of the injured were passengers and 4 were crew members. The flight was diverted to Denver airport so the injured passengers could be cared for by medical professionals.
One person was critically injured, there were 11 neck and back injuries and there were lots of bruises, sprains and muscle strains. Most of the injured were released within a short period of time.
Passengers have been injured 3 times this year on United Airlines flights. This particular incident was apparently caused by some violent thunderstorms over Missouri and Kansas. Thunderstorms are pretty common in the summer and often cause updrafts up to 100 mph. Most of the time flights are diverted around these violent storms because these updrafts can't be predicted by forecasters.
You as a passenger have no control of these natural events so always make sure that you are prepared in case your trip is canceled or delayed by them. You can at least protect your financial investment by having the proper trip insurance.
