The American Kennel Club's book The Complete Dog Book describes the Doberman pinscher temperament in this way: "Among the endearing qualities of the Doberman has come to be its devotion to hearth and home, and its discriminating service as friend and guardian of the whole family. The proper bred and trained specimen has a sane mind and a sound body; the heart and spirit of a gentleman."

You can see the good breeding and upright character in the picture of Grant above. He sits regally and shows off his innate character.

Doberman Pinschers are very alert, definitely energetic with great strength and stamina. Dobies like to be with their owners and are protective. They prefer human interaction and leadership. Doberman's are very loyal, tolerant, dedicated and affectionate with the family. Our Min Pin Sophie is nicknamed "belly boo" because she loves to roll onto her back and show her tummy!

As working dogs they are determined, bold and assertive. Dobermans are adaptable, highly skilled and versatile. They are bright, intelligent animals and very easy to train. They are an outstanding natural watch and guard dog and do not need training to do this.

This breed is not for everyone. The Doberman ideally needs an owner who is kind but firm, someone who will apply a natural authority and be the alpha of the pack. All family members should be confident and consistent, setting rules and applying them.
