Theodor Seuss Geisel better known as Dr. Seuss captured children's imagination with his rhyming text and funny creatures.

Raising a Reader

It is never too early to start reading to children. Read to your children even if they are very young, and cannot yet understand the words. Your children will enjoy the attention, and be soothed by listening to your voice. Start with simple board books with bright colors, and only a word or two on the page. When they are babies they do not have a long attention span, so you will want to use books with vibrant colors, and flip the pages fairly quickly. Touchy feely, and texture books are also great for infants and toddlers.

You can use counting, and alphabet based books to help your pre-school child start learning at home. They will also begin to develop a sense of what types of books they enjoy at this age. What do they like? Trucks and tractors, or snakes and lizards, or maybe they enjoy princess and mermaid stories. Find books with subjects your children are interested in to help fuel the reading fire.

When children start to read find interactive puzzle books, or search and find books. These help them learn to look for detail. Helping children learn to find the fine detail in a picture, can help them when they begin to read, to find the small detail (individual letters) in the text. This is an essential part of the phonics learning method. Some great books for this are, the I Spy series, Where's Waldo, and Usborne Books Great Search series. Any book that has your child looking for a small detail in the picture is.

Even after your children learn to read they will still enjoy being read to. Give them the opportunity to get into a story without reading it alone, or use it as a reward for reading on their own. You can have them read a chapter, or several pages, then you read a chapter to them as a reward. Your children will appreciate the one on one time, and develop an appreciation for reading at the same time.
