David Tennant shines as The Tenth Doctor

I had never watched Doctor Who before the BBC revived the series with Christopher Eccleston. I thought he would be my Doctor forever -- but then David Tennant stepped in and stole my heart. If you're like me, you can't get enough of the Tenth Doctor. Well, I have good news -- there's more of the Tenth Doctor than just the BBC episodes! There are plenty of audiobooks featuring the Tenth Doctor, including several titles narrated by David Tennant himself. Read on to discover new adventures with Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, or Donna Noble, or without his regular companions.

NOTE: I've only listed selections rated 4 stars or better on average by Amazon.com users. Most of these titles are also available in paperback.

"Hello, I'm The Doctor.
And if you can hear this, then one of us is going to die."

Audio books read by David Tennant

If you're only looking for audiobooks read by David Tennant, here's your list! There's really no substitute for hearing David Tennant as The Doctor, and he does a great job voicing other characters as well.

NOTE: David Tennant also narrated "The Feast of the Drowned," a Doctor/Rose book. Unfortunately, the audio version isn't available on Amazon, but they do have the print version if you're interested.

Doctor Who: Dead Air
Running time: 1 hour, 12 min.
Product Description: At the bottom of the sea, in the wreck of a floating radio station, a lost recording has been discovered. After careful restoration, it is played for the first time - to reveal the voice of the Doctor, broadcasting from Radio Bravo in 1966. He has traveled to Earth in search of the Hush - a terrible weapon that kills, silences and devours anything that makes noise.

Doctor Who: The Last Voyage
Running time: 2 hours, 14 min.
Product Description: The TARDIS materializes on board the maiden voyage of a pioneering space cruiser, traveling from Earth to the planet Eternity. The Doctor has just started exploring the vehicle when there is a loud bang, a massive jolt and a flash of light. Shortly afterward, he discovers that nearly all the passengers and crew have disappeared.

Doctor Who: The Day of the Troll
Running time: 2 hours, 17 min.
Product Description: When the Doctor arrives in England, 2073, he's in for a nasty shock. Instead of the greatest party ever held in the Solar System (according to the guide), he finds a time of famine and world starvation. Even worse, something is coming out of the ground to steal people away...

Doctor Who: Pest Control
Running time: 2 hours and 26 min.
Product Description: The Doctor and Donna find themselves in the thick of trouble on a distant planet, where soldiers transform into monstrous beetles, and everyone falls under the threat of a huge, mechanical exterminator.

Doctor Who: The Stone Rose
Length: 2 hours and 22 min.
Product Description: Mickey is startled to find a statue of Rose in a museum; a statue that is 2,000 years old. The Doctor realises that this means the TARDIS will shortly take them to Ancient Rome, but when it does, he and Rose soon have more on their minds than sculpture.

Doctor Who: The Resurrection Casket
Length: 2 hours and 29 min.
Product Description: Starfall: a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. And that includes the TARDIS.

My review of Dead Air: a Doctor Who audio adventure

An audiobook probably seemed like the perfect format for a story about an intelligent sound-creature that kills, but I can't help thinking that this idea would have worked better as an episode of the show. The premise is clever and the end is satisfying, but some of the time in between dragged a bit. While the story reminded me of "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead", the tension was often absent; it was too easy to forget that the characters were wandering through a dark and largely deserted ship. But the tale did have its moments -- some that made me laugh and some that gave me chills. And kudos to David Tennant for his narration, even if the character of Tommo did remind me entirely too much of Zaphod Beeblebrox. I'd call this one entertaining, but not essential listening for casual fans of The Doctor.

The Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble

Promotional photo from the BBC

Donna Noble was the Tenth Doctor's last companion. Some people didn't care for her, but Donna's outspoken, willful personality grew on me pretty quickly. Donna may not have had special skills, but she wasn't going to let anyone boss her around -- not even the Doctor.

My favorite Donna Noble episode: "Turn Left"

The Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones

Promotional photo from the BBC

Martha Jones was the Doctor's companion for series three of the show. Her medical training came in handy -- she saved the Doctor's life more than once -- but something about her character didn't quite work for me; while I liked Martha, she seemed a little bland somehow, not vivid enough to really stand out next to the Doctor. (Although I could certainly relate to her crush on him!)

Martha made guest appearances in later seasons and was also in three episodes of Torchwood.

My favorite Martha Jones episode: this one's a tough call, but I'll go with "The Shakespeare Code"

The Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler

Promotional photo from the BBC

Rose Tyler was the Tenth Doctor's first companion and is still the best in the opinion of many fans. She left the show after series two, but luckily she returned for several later episodes (including Turn Left, one of my favorites).

My favorite Rose Tyler episode: "Father's Day" (one of my favorite Who episodes; it makes me cry every time)

My all time favourite doctor was Tom Baker.
But I also liked Chris Eccleston and was disappointed that he only did one season. David Tennant was great and I loved all the seasons he was the doctor. Unfortunately I do not like the new Doctor very much, Matt Smith talks too fast and that hair falling in his face is very annoying...

David Tennant was awesome and Donna Noble is probably my favorite companion in the reboot. Oh, you forgot River Song in your poll! She's great too. Did not know about the audio books. May have to check out the Doctor & Donna ones. I miss those two. :)

I don't get BBC, so really am not familiar with the show or the books but they both certainly are gaining in notable popularity with very loyal fans being added by the moment. Well done!

Great lens! My favorite Doctor is not in your poll (he's the new one, Matt Smith!). But, I'm also a big Tom Baker fan, so you might be interested to know he's reported to be doing more audio adventures as the Doctor this year. Plus, old companions like Leela are returning to do them with him. Cool huh!

I didn't know this -- I think it's great that they're doing new stories for previous Doctors too! Thanks for sharing!
