Why not listen to some Doctor Who themes whilst perusing this lens, to get you in the time traveling party mood?

Doctor Who Birthday Party Tableware

A party table can look great when decorated in the party theme. As a basic, start with a themed tablecloth, either with the theme design on, or in a matching plain colour. You can find Doctor Who tablecloths printed with Daleks on - very cool!

You can then incorporate the theme into place settings, tableware and accessories. Think about napkins, serving platters and bowls, cutlery, table centerpieces, party blowers, fun toys and anything else that takes your creative fancy!

Napkins can really jazz up a table - these Dalek designs are striking in themselves, but you could make an equally impressive statement by doing some fancy folds with blue or black napkins.

This tablecloth is a good alternative option to a Doctor Who printed one, but would be best if teamed with some Doctor Who designed items on top of it. A centerpiece, some napkins and themed plates and cups would look superb!

Accessorize your plates and cups (which are discussed in the next two sections) with some matching cutlery and serving bowls! Remember, you don't have to have everything in the party theme design. If you can't afford it all or can't find certain items, look for plain versions in complementary colours, like some of these!

Doctor Who Birthday Party Food

Doctor Who Cake Topper

Doctor Who party food can be great fun to make - just think space, aliens, planets and monsters!

The most important item is, of course, the cake. More on that further down the page. Here's how you can turn other everyday food into Tardis-tastic party fare!

* Pizza Planets - make mini pizzas with different color toppings and give each type a planet name - red peppers can be Mars, for example!

* Use cookie cutters or create freestyle to make biscuits, cookies, sandwiches (and anything else that grabs your imagination) in the shape of stars, planets, aliens, monsters, moons, spaceships, UFOs, or even the Tardis or K-9!

* Use Doctor Who rice paper toppers to decorate cupcakes and cookies

* Create alien-themed food, such as Slitheen Slime Jelly, Sycorax Soup, Dalek Dunkin' Donuts and so on! Be creative - kids love all things gross, so don't be afraid to go for names like Alien Sludge or Scrambled Brains!

* Make some great party food or drinks and name them after characters and items, such as Captain Jack's Space Punch, K-9 Bites (cocktail sausages) or a non-alcoholic cocktail called the Sonic Screwdriver!

Here are some awesome links to amazing Doctor Who recipes! Keep checking back as I'll be adding more as I find them!

You HAVE to check this one out if you love chocolate, you'll be so tempted to make it. It looks sooo tasty! Although after this amount of chocolate you might feel slightly exterminated... Doctor Who Birthday Party Dalek Chocolate Cake Recipe

You can even find inspiration in the Doctor Who Cook Book! This is the only Doctor Who cookbook ever made (see picture above) and contains recipes from Doctor Who cast and crew! The author is a former production manager on the show and each recipe is accompanies by a bio of the person who contributed it. It even contains pictures of cast in their kitchens, including Colin Baker.

Doctor Who Birthday Cake

Doctor Who Cake as sold in UK supermarkets

No party is complete without cake! You used to be able to buy an amazing Doctor Who Tardis cake in the UK, from supermarkets like Asda - this is it in the picture! Not sure if you can still get them, but fear not, you can have fun making your own too! All you need to do is bake a Victoria sponge cake in a bread loaf tin to get the right shape, then decorate with ready to roll blue icing and accentuate with black and white to "draw" in the Tardis features.

A word of warning though - many people, including the Doctor Who crew (who ate one of the Asda cakes at one of the wrap parties) report eating too much of that blue icing can do funny things to the tummy!!

If that sounds a bit hard, you can have just as much fun making or buying a classic round sponge and icing it in blue or white, before decorating with a Doctor Who figurine or having a go at icing a Doctor Who message or picture. You can even get Doctor Who birthday party cake toppers on ebay.co.uk which can sit on top of the icing. There are rice papers available for cupcakes as well!

For the perfect finishing touch, you'll need some fabulous birthday candles!

Doctor Who Birthday Party Games

Once again, think space and time when thinking up games for your Doctor Who party! There are so many characters, aliens and themes in Doctor Who that it is easy to create a whole host of party games. Here are some ideas:

* Adapt the classics - change Musical Chairs to Musical Planets (cut out different planets for the children to sit on - eventually each one gets sucked into a black hole!) or play Pin the Tie on the Doctor instead of Pin the Tail on the Donkey! Or play Autons - the Doctor Who version of Musical Statues!

* Doctor Who Sticky Toffee - kids can take it in turns to be the characters. Make one person the Doctor, and some the baddies (Daleks, Cybermen etc). Everyone who isn't a character runs around until caught by a baddie - they then have to stand still until released by the Doctor

* Run a Doctor Who Mastermind-style quiz or have guessing games where the children have to name aliens and characters from descriptions - the quicker they identify them, the more points they win!

* For older children, there is a GREAT party game suggestion here - DOCTOR WHO BIRTHDAY PARTY GAME

* You can find online games on the BBC Doctor Who website here - DOCTOR WHO ONLINE GAMES

* Run a Doctor Who treasure hunt, or have a race against time to find and save the Doctor!

* You can also have some crafting activities available. Kids could make or paint an alien mask, make sonic screwdrivers, build a Tardis (you can buy Tardis kits below!) or design their own Doctor Who monster on paper or out of Play-Doh. Don't forget to have prizes for the best entries!

You can also have some fun with the range of Doctor Who games available, such as these!

Doctor Who Pinatas

What the Heck is a Piñata?
Originating in China and Mexico, the piñata is usually made of cardboard or papier-mâché, decorated colorfully to match the birthday party theme and filled with confetti, candy or chocolates, and small toys. Long colored strings are attached to the bottom, which conceals a trap-door. Near the end of the party (traditionally after the cutting of the cake), the piñata will be 'broken'. Children get an empty party bag and gather under the piñata. Each child holds one of the dangling strings. One the count of three, the children pull their strings, which opens the trap-door and breaks the piñata. The children are showered in treats and confetti, which they can then fill their party bags with! An alternative, more recent custom in America is for the children to hit the piñata with bats until it breaks!

You can make a piñata out of paper mache. Some ideas for the shape include:

A Dalek

K-9

Tardis

Cyberman Helmet

Alien head - such as Slitheen

Old Doctor VS New Doctor!

Do you like the old Doctor Who shows best, or the newer series? Do you think that children identify better with the new Doctors, or do you have kids who love the old ones just as much? Have your say here!

Old Doctor or New Doctor?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Definitely Old Doctor! The classics are the best!

TheWhistler says:

The original William Hartnell.

CCGAL says:

I watched Dr. Who in the USA on PBS back in the 80's - and only recently caught a new episode. I have to say the old shows I watched were more interesting to me, but it could also be I was much younger then.

No way, New Doctor! David Tennant and co are the best!

Sarah says:

David Tennant!!

B says:

David Tennant

~~~~ says:
NEW DOCTOR RULES!!!!!
NevermoreShirts says:
Old Doctor is fantastic, but the new stories are better overall - but definitely love the episodes where they pay respects to those who came before (like when they showed all the previous Doctors before Eleven introduced himself to the Atraxi)
CAS says:
I'm a fan in the US, and watched the old episodes (Tom Baker, Peter Davison etc.) in college on public tv. Loved them but the new series is so much better in terms of stories and effects. I have liked each actor in turn (really would have loved Christopher Eccleston to stay on a bit longer before Tennant though!) so I can't pick a best, but I must say Matt Smith really strikes me as very much in line with the old series Doctors and I think he's fantastic.
