A review of the BBC Doctor Who DVD set, "Lost in Time"

In the 1970s many black and white television programs were destroyed by the BBC. Doctor Who was hit very badly by this and whole seasons were almost wiped out completely. Seasons three, four and five were the worst effected.

Despite this situation much black and white Doctor Who still exists and can be enjoyed today. There are 28 complete stories still in existence. The orphaned episodes (where 50% or less of a story exists) have been released on the BBC DVD box-set "Lost in Time".

"Lost in Time" contains no complete stories so it is a box-set that will be enjoyed by Doctor Who fans rather than by a more general audience.

This three disc, box-set features 18 complete black and white episodes from the 1960s. It also contains audio tracks, numerous film clips and a documentary.

There are no complete stories.

Disc 1 - William Hartnell

The first DVD contains orphaned episodes from season 2 and season 3
  1. The Crusade - episodes 1 and 3 - Season 2
    This is the only story in season 2 which is not complete, originally containing 4 episodes.
    Episode 3 can be watched with an accompanying commentary.
    The complete audio tracks for the remaining two episodes are also included.
  2. The Dalek Masterplan - episodes 2, 5 and 10 - Season 3
    This was the longest ever Doctor Who story comprising 12 episodes.
    Episode 2 can be watched with an accompanying commentary.
  3. The Celestial Toymaker - episode 4 - Season 3

Galaxy Four episode episode 3 has recently been discovered and will be released on DVD in the future

Disc 2 - Patrick Troughton, Season 4

Season 4 was the season that suffered most from lost episodes. There are no complete stories in this season.
