Eleven Doctors

The Doctor Takes On Different Bodies, Different Personalities

Doctor Who BBCIf you aren't too familiar with the Doctor Who series, you may wonder why there have been so many different "Doctors" in the show.

When the Doctor is near death, he regenerates and takes on a new body with a somewhat different personality. To date there have been eleven Doctors. Since the revival of "Doctor Who" in 2005 there have been three doctors -- the ninth, tenth, and the eleventh.

Also, his name isn't "Doctor Who". He goes by "The Doctor", and people naturally wonder, "Doctor who?", thus the name of the show.

The Ninth Doctor

Played by Christopher Eccleston

The Doctor, a 900 year old Time Lord from the destroyed planet Gallifrey, regenerates when he's near death, and takes on the shape of a new body, and to some extent a new personality. There've been 11 doctors portrayed so far.

The re-launched "modern" incarnation of Doctor Who in 2005 starts with the Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston. He stayed with the show for one season. The Doctor's companion during this time was Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper.

The Tenth Doctor

Played by David Tennant

The Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, appears for three seasons, and travels at different times with Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). This incarnation of The Doctor is more light-hearted and talkative than the Ninth Doctor, but he does have a vengeful side.

Currently the Tenth Doctor is my favorite, although all three are splendid!

The Eleventh Doctor

Played by Matt Smith

The Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith, is the current Doctor. Smith, age 26 when he was cast, is the youngest actor to play "The Doctor". He's portrayed as a quick-tempered but compassionate man. Although The Tenth Doctor is still my favorite, I'm also starting to grow very fond of this current one.

The Tardis

The Doctor's Time and Space Vehicle

If you're at all familiar with the Doctor Who series, then you're familiar with the Tardis, the Doctor's sentient time machine and space craft. "Tardis" is an acronym for "Time and relative dimension in space".

As the name implies, this machine can take the Doctor anywhere in time and space. A fully functional Tardis has chameleon-like properties and blends in to the surroundings of whatever time and location it lands in. But this Tardis developed a circuit problem after a trip to 1963 London after it took the shape of a Police Call Box, and it's stuck in this shape. But the Doctor rather likes the shape!

Bow Ties Are Cool - Doctor Who
The eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith, has interesting ideas about what's cool. He likes bow ties, fez hats, and stetson cowboy hats. You can be cool like The Doctor, and wear your own bow tie, fez, or stetson.
