For The 14th Year In A Row, Doeren Mayhew Has Made The Top 100 Accounting Firms List
Doeren Mayhew, a public accounting and consulting firm, has been named to the Top 100 Accounting Firms List for the 14th consecutive year.
The Platt Group, the publishers of INSIDE Public Accounting (IPA), presented the 19th annual report on the nation's Top 100 accounting firms - one of the most comprehensive of its kind -- on August 24th, 2009.
"For the IPA Top 100 firms, the four-year run of double-digit growth has ended, but the Top 100 firms in the country still report a respectable 7.13% revenue growth rate on average," says Michael Platt, consultant and publisher of IPA. "Net income growth, however, is flat as we moved from an almost 15% growth rate last year to not quite maintaining that level," he adds.

Doeren Mayhew Gives Back With Child ID Kits
Doeren Mayhew launches new Website that offers free Child ID kits to parents.
Doeren Mayhew, a Troy-based certified public accounting and management consulting firm, announced today that it has launched a new Website [http://www.freechildidkits.net/] where visitors can sign up to receive free child ID kits.
Doeren Mayhew has found a creative approach to helping its local community by providing free child ID kits to clients, prospects, employees, or anyone that asks for one. People requesting the kits from Doeren Mayhew are assured that they are not going to be solicited in any way; the program is simply for goodwill. To date, Doeren Mayhew has given away over 1,000 kits, originally offering them at seminars and conferences, and eventually through the firm's corporate Website. The positive response received on the corporate Website lead Doeren Mayhew to create a dedicated Website just for child ID kits.
The kits keep a child's vital identification information close at hand in case of an emergency. If the unthinkable ever happens, this kit can be easily stored and is readily accessible to authorities. Each kit records vital medical, identification, and contact information, including fingerprint and DNA samples that can be instantly provided to emergency personnel.
"Doeren Mayhew is a very family-focused firm and extremely committed to our community. We place the utmost importance on the safety and well being of our children and just wanted to do something to underscore this sentiment. Offering free child ID kits to clients and friends of the firm just felt like a natural fit," says Larry Simon, a Director at Doeren Mayhew. 'We started offering the kits four years ago and continue to receive great response today. When people call or e-mail us requesting the kits, they are always appreciative and supportive. It's just a small way we can give back to our clients and the community.'

Doeren Mayhew's expansion efforts begin with Houston
By Tom Henderson
Doeren Mayhew, a Troy-based accounting and consulting firm that has had a single Detroit-area office since it was founded in Grosse Pointe Park in 1932, has decided it's time to grow a much larger geographical footprint, both to better serve its core business lines and to seek new business far afield from the Michigan economy.
The firm, which already serves clients nationwide, is opening up a Houston office first. Robin Hoag, a partner and one of the four directors of the firm's financial institutions practice, was in Houston conducting interviews recently and hopes to hire the first two members of that office soon to focus on Doeren Mayhew's current credit union clients in the South and to help attract new ones.
Hoag said he'd like to have the Houston office at 10-15 employees within three years and to land more than 30 clients in the first two years. According to managing director Mark Crawford, Doeren Mayhew, which expects revenue to be flat in 2009 at about $40 million, has a goal of having Houston generating revenue at a rate of $2 million a year by the end of the second year.
Crawford, who is also Doeren Mayhew's CEO and president, said the firm also is targeting offices in Atlanta and Nashville to support its auto-supplier clients and an office in southern Florida to support its credit union practice and its commercial construction practice. He said the firm ranks No. 4 nationally in the size of its credit union practice.
"If you have many of your auto suppliers migrating down South, it becomes difficult to market there without a physical presence," said director Lawrence Simon.
Crawford said he has had on-and-off talks over the last year with a Florida firm about a possible acquisition, but everything is on hold until the end of tax season in April.
The firm is expected to set a timetable for further expansion at the spring directors' meeting.
"Most of our competition are multi-office practices. We're going to be here forever. We love Michigan. But we need to move our tentacles," he said.
Doeren Mayhew's decision to expand beyond Michigan makes sense, said Bill Hermann, managing partner at Southfield-based Plante & Moran
P.L.L.C., which in recent years has expanded its U.S. footprint to include Ohio and Illinois, and its international presence to include China and Mexico.
"Doeren Mayhew is not alone in looking at expanding their footprint. Most substantial firms are looking for outlets to expand their specialty areas, and firms need to go where they find an intersection of opportunity and application of their skill sets," Hermann said. "Although distance does stretch the fabric of a firm and does require special attention to maintain the unique attributes of the firm."
As for Doeren Mayhew's efforts at expanding key practice groups, Hermann said, "There is a nationwide trend toward specialization by industry within all CPA firms. It is a natural move toward efficiency and leveraging knowledge."
As of the beginning of the year, Doeren Mayhew ranked ninth among area accounting firms with 217 employees. Plante & Moran ranked No. 2 with 927.
