Some people say that Squidoo sucks

Well, then, does it or does it not?

(this topic was important around the middle of July 2007; maybe someday it will arise again)

Some squids at SquidU said you have to eat your own foot or something, if you write stuff like this. Does Squidoo suck? OMFG, it's, like, blasphemy, totally, even to ask, right?

Meh. I'm hoping to avoid putting my foot in my mouth and eating it along with my words, if I present both sides of the discussion nicely, accurately and without prejudice. Sine ira et studio. Well, I will include some studies here, but "studio" actually means "prejudice" in Latin. See, I know some Latin. Did I tell you already I have a lawyer's education? No? Well, I just did. I hate law, so I got me a glamorous copywriter career instead. But the diploma is gathering dust somewhere, and some of the knowledge is still in my head.

Umm... so, back to those sucker-covered tentacles of Squidoo.

OK, let's start with my own not so humble opinion

What's good in Squidoo: you can collect all info on one topic, including shopping links, other links, your own opinion (most important), and even maybe some helpful comments (highly improbable), in one place. For your own future reference.
For people such as me, who probably have undiagnosed and untreated Attention Deficit Whatever, who get interested, nay, obsessed, with one silly topic or another, "it's like life changing, man!", and then in a few days get distracted by equally awesome topic, and so ad infinitum, this feature is extremely useful.
I tried to use my blog for this, it's called "Passing Interest", but it's annoying to have to read yards of your own blog about all those so-last-week topics until you find something you vaguely remember was sort of cool.

What's not so good in Squidoo. To tell you the truth, money here sucks (for me). All those lenses on monetization and whatnot are boring. I made 5 dollars during my first 3 months here. And I couldn't withdraw it through PayPal anyway because Lithuania is not getting that kind of PayPal service yet.
All those crazy people running around Squidoo, screaming MAKE MONEY, well, they suck too. But as long as I stay in well-lit areas, I feel safe.
If you spam my guestbooks, I'll go after you, though. We got tools for that now, remember?

My opinion summed up in an easy-to-remember catchy slogan

Self-publishing and focused info good, money BAAA-AAA-AAAD!
Lather, rinse, repeat.

The Bad News and The Anti-Squids

Google Acting Against Squidoo Due To Spam
A TechCrunch post by Duncan Riley. User comments quite friendly and intelligent.
Search Spam Fight - Mahalo: 1; Squidoo: 0
This is a nice informative article complete with a timeline and lots of relevant links.
What the heck is Mahalo, you ask? Oh, it's this weak little web service (or, as someone blogged, a stupid attempt at black-hat SEO) where humans try to do what Google does, only better. Here's an article on Mahalo, if you want to know more.
Squidoo Slap!!
Tubbynerd blog reports bad news: Squidoo slapped by Google. Speculates on reasons.
Why is Seth Godin not talking about the Squidoo problem?
A post on "The Jason Calacanis Weblog" about spam on Squidoo. Posted a couple days before the actual problem with Google began.
This Jason is apparently the guy who started that malaho or mahalo whatsit and attacked Squidoo to attract attention. Or so many, many web users say :)
More on Squidoo spam (and Hubpages doing a good job?)
Same Mahalo Jason guy reporting spam from Squidoo, again. According to him, Hubpages did a better job at cleaning up the same spam.
Squidoo +++ for responding
Mahalo guy Jason again, patting Squidoo on the back for Squidoo's two long blog posts (on July 10th). Seemingly friendly and positive post.
Please don't give me credit for Squidoo's problems
Mahalo Jason again, July 11th. Oh, so for giving Squidoo problems you get "credit", not "blame"?
This guy Jason is really not on Squidoo's side. He's on Mahalo side! Let's repeat again: Mahalo is this lame web service that gets no traffic. Way to go, Mahalo guy.

Compare: some really old bad news from the ancient 2006

These people predicted Squidoo would die. You be the judge if they were right.
Squidoo: Seth Godin's Purple Albatross?
An TechCrunch post by Michael Arrington, explaining why Squidoo won't work.
Is Squidoo becoming a massive, dirty SEO back alley?
Actually this was written in Feb 2007. Still, it happened before Squidoo's trouble with Google began.
Squidoo Sucks
A short little go-against-the-flow Squidoo lens saying that Squidoo sucks.
The author explains that he couldn't make any good money on Squidoo.
I'd agree with that - Suidmoney sucks. For me, at least. But does Squidoo itself suck because of that?
Why Squidoo Monetization Sucks
This (2006) post lists the look of Squidoo lenses as the first reason why it won't work. And they were the old maxed kind of lenses back then, remember?
He says lenses look like irrelevant parked domain pages.
I actually agree with that. The look is old (so 2006), dusty and generally icky. Brown and blue.
He has some more reasons there but they are, like, whatever. SEO and whatnot. Check it out if you like.
Squidoo, Edgeio and the "F-Word"
Mashable.com said Squidoo was failing. In May 2006. And some sort of Edgeio was, like, the wave of the future.
What the heck is Edgeio? I don't know. Looks a lot like that Mahalo thing to me.
They will not come
Another insight from 2006: Squidoo will have no lensmasters because it's too much work, too little money.
Well, this seems to be clearly a false prediction. Some lensmasters are getting big money (or that's what they say), and some are working for 5$, like me.
9rules vs. Squidoo
9rules blog compares their own user-generated content website against Squidoo.
The Squidoo Undo
This guy was saying in 2006 that not only would Squidoo sink soon, but it would take Seth Godin down with it, too. Nobody would even read Seth's blog.
Oh my. Did all that happen?
Squidoo to be renamed Spamdoo
A bit later, in October of 2006, another blogger says there's too much spam on Squidoo. Also, that there's no motivation for normal, non-spammy users to build more than one lens, or to fill it with anything at all. Hah. Wrong again.
There's a speck of truth in the end of this post, though - the guy says that Squidoo users have no say on the lens layout or style. It's true. It sucks. But it doesn't kill Squidoo itself, OK? It's just very annoying.
There's also a link to his lens, Spamdoo. Too bad it's currently locked. I really wonder what was in it.

Let's sum this up again

So you see, there was a big internet buzz about Squidoo failing, back in May 2006. Many people talked about it just to attract attention to themselves by talking about something that everyone else was talking about.
Then it (mostly) went away.

Then, in July 2007, it came back. Why? Because traffic disappeared (fell by 75% in some cases and by none at all in some other cases). Then we saw panic among some lensmasters and pledges of devotion from other lensmasters.

Then Squidoo cracked down on spam, hard, and reassured the frightened squids that all will be well. Some PR was also issued.

Some bloggers also took the opportunity to talk about Squidoo, comparing and promoting their own pathetic attempts at web2.0, again.
Let's just remember that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

For more information on Squidoo's awesometasticness go read Squidblog and Squid University (or at least I assume that's what SquidU means; that's why I didn't go there for the first month of my squidding; I thought it was pompous and boring).

See, I got bored with this whole topic already (or to be more exact, I got distracted by the prospect of the nice sunny evening waiting outside).

Squidoo sucks only a bit, and only for some people, and then only in some areas. And it will all be fixed in due time (maybe even the design will change), because with strange aeons even death may die, and then all will be well and all will be well and all manner of things will be well.
