Dog Aromatherapy - Improving Your Dogs Life

I have always been an advocate for Aromatherapy in the home. There is nothing nicer than the scent of beautiful essential oils to make your home smell gorgeous and inviting.

To be massaged using essential oils is pure heaven.

We humans have got it good but what about our canine friends?

I recently discovered a terrific book that explains how you can use Aromatherapy oils on your dog. Imagine helping your best buddy with arthritis pain, anxiety, skin problems, lethargy, bad breath etc and all using purely natural plant extracts in the form of essential oils.

It's brilliant and it's called, of course, Dog Aromatherapy. I tried some of the blends on my dog and the result was fantastic and he smells great too.

Dog Aromatherapy - What Is Aromatherapy?

Alternative medicine for pets is a growing industry. Although alternative treatments like aromatherapy and herbs have been used for centuries it was not until recently that the pet industry jumped on the band wagon. Aromatherapy is the practice and use of essential oils for physical and psychological well-being. Aromatherapy is more than just smelling or inhaling a certain essential oil. The essential oils can also be used topically to heal and disinfect.

Aromatherapy is essentially used to improve behavior and in some cases to treat certain medical conditions. Aromatherapy has been used for centuries on people, but have you heard of aromatherapy for dogs? Dog Aromatherapy is catching up in popularity since the last two decades. It was initially popularized by a French veterinarian, Dr Patrick Pageat. Aromatherapy is a more concise use of aromas for treatment of behavioral and medical problems. It is important to note that aromatherapy works differently on humans and people.

Dog Aromatherapy - Understanding Essential Oils

Essential oils are only produced by nature. They are completely natural. The reason they are called essential oils is because they contain the essence of the particular plant or flower they are extracted from. They are extracted from the glands, glandular hair, sac or veins of plants, flowers or roots.

Essential oils are known for their benefits and healing properties to both body and the mind. These oils are absorbed through the skin or by inhalation. Essential oils and aroma therapy are considered to be extremely therapeutic and revitalizing. Each essential oil has its own healing properties. They are considered to be antiseptic and detoxifying, and the best part is they enhance metabolism and immunity. Beware while trying aromatherapy and essential oils on your dog, as some oils like peppermint and pennyroyal oils can be dangerous to dogs if they are consumed orally.

Essential oils if not used carefully can be toxic or dangerous. This is because essential oils are highly volatile, that is they convert easily into gaseous form which can be flammable. And because of their potency they are never directly applied on to the body or consumed, they are always diluted.

Aromatherapy For Dogs

Aromatherapy has been used for dogs for over two decades. There are three basic methods of using aromatherapy for dogs, massaging, diffusion or oral. All these methods have their own benefits. By massaging essential oils into the skin of the dog, you are actually allowing the essential oils penetrate through the skin into the pores from where they get absorbed into the bloodstream. The essential oil is generally mixed with any base oil for application onto the skin. Remember that certain oils are toxic for your dog, so while massaging the oil into the skin of the dog make sure you apply it in a place where the dog cannot lick it off and ingest it.

Inhalation is another effective way of adopting aromatherapy and use of essential oils. This method requires a diffuser which helps the oil to get converted into its gaseous state which then can be inhaled by the dog. Though oral application is another method of aromatherapy, it is the least used method. This is because orally ingesting essential oils can be sometimes lethal. Extra care has to be taken while using essential oils orally and only under the care of an expert.
