Dog Breeds, What You Need To Pick The Right Dog For You
Picking the right dog breed for you requires a tedious amount of research sometimes, but other times you leave your house ending up at the pet store or shelter and the next thing you know you've got a dog in the back of your car!
But in a perfect world, you do want to do just a little itty bitty bit of research first, just to make sure your getting the right dog. Because some dogs are high energy, some are low, some are prone to behavior issues if they don't have the right owner, while others are amazing with kids, like the Newfoundland (nicknamed the nanny dog), while other dogs are a little more snappy or fragile.
Of course if you find the right dog, take it home and have fun!! But be careful! Don't forget that not all dogs are the same despite the breed, but researching the breed will give you guidelines to what to expect.

Certain Dog Breeds Have More Issues Then Others
Getting in the trash, running off a few times, nipping. Every dog is going to have a quirk! Don't let that scare you off, there are many, many ways off preventing things like that.
Training from an early age is one, however don't think that's going to stop everything. But its a start, you might want to consider a few training books which you can buy or get from your local library. Owning a dog is a lot of work, but worth the effort.
Toy Poodle
This Is A Non Allergic Dog Breed
These dogs are good candidates for dog agility because they are sturdy and very willing to learn. Toy poodles are not necessarily ideal dogs for houses with small children, family's with older children are more suitable. With toy poodles early socialization is required it is important so the dog will not be mean or aggressive towards other people and dogs.
Exercise is important, however, you don't have to take this dog on daily long walks, it is recommended, but just playing with them or teaching them tricks is a good way to get them moving. About 20 to 40 minutes a day of exercise is required.
Poodles are going to be one of the more needy dog breeds when it comes to grooming. They need regular bathing and grooming because their hair will knot and the knots have a high chance to be bad enough that you have to actually cut the matting out.
I repeat Bathing regularly and clip that dogs hair every six weeks. This particular dog breed doesn't have fur they have hair, that why this breed of dog is called a "Non Allergenic Dog". So a perk of having one of these joyful little fellows is that if someone in your family is allergic to dogs this is an option. The ears of this dog breed need to be cleaned and checked for ear infections.
Although toy poodles can be prone to some health problems they are mostly treatable and toy poodles still live relatively long lives, you can normally expect this breed to live to an average of 14 years, and a range of about 12 to 18. Common health problems are kidney disease and Addison's disease.
They make excellent show dogs are tricksters and are good companions, what more could a person ask for?
Rottweiler
But these dogs do need a firm hand and mind to be able to handle them. These are good dogs and can be good with children, other animals, and tolerate most things but they must be socialized thoroughly.
It is important this is not a dog to take on lightly they want to please there masters and they do love you, but, these are BIG dogs and need a pack leader, they cannot be the pack leader that is very important. They are loyal, protective and willing to defend their family fiercely if the need arises. In fact the males weigh from 95 to 130, and the females weigh 85 to 115. So I'm not joking they are big dogs and are all muscle.
Although they make up for their size with a big heart, they are good guard dogs and can be amazing with kids. And tend to love people, but if there is someone coming toward your house with any bad intent they won't get past your sidewalk.
These dogs can live in apartments or in a mansion, they do fine as long as they have enough exercise. They would love to just wander the woods with you, they won't really want to leave from your side, and they like being taken for a nice long walk or jog. A nice bike ride would be nice as well. Swimming and fetch are lovely ways to exercise and play with your dog also.
These dogs despite their size live a long time for a large dog, about 10 to 12 years is their general life span. This is a that is dog is fairly easy to groom. You only need to bathe them when they are in need of a bath, you mainly need to brush them when they are shedding, they do shed though not as bad as some dog breeds. Their short glossy fur makes them a fairly low maintenance dog when it comes to grooming.
Some of the more common health problems for this breed: they are prone to hip dysplasia, they are also prone to entropion, and are susceptible to ACL, and they can overheat easily. Also they snore... just thought I'd add that, hehe.
Despite all the health problems they can get, they are worth it. These dogs are amazing despite their bad reputation.
Dog Training Books (Important!)
Bichon Frise
Non Allergic Dog Breed
This dog breed has an independent spirit and an intelligent mind. The Bichon Frise is a little charmer and a gentle companion, this dog is not considered a yapper. The Bichon Frise is fairly easy to train, but they may be hard to house break. They need people to be happy, they are naturally social. Their love of everyone an everything make these dogs excellent with kids and other pets.
This is an obedient and competitive breed with an absolute love for people. The Bichon Frise loves long walks learning tricks and running, and about everything in between that has to do with fun and human contact. These are active little dogs and do need a nice long daily walk. They will be fairly active indoors so playing with them inside well take care of some of their exercise needs.
These aren't very large dogs they weigh around 7 to 12 pounds, not very big are they?
These dogs can live in apartments because they are fairly active indoors and don't need a yard as long as they get enough exercise. These dogs are active and do need a daily walk and play. Play is going to take care of some their exercise needs, but they need a walk to take care of that primal need to walk.
The Bichon Frise lives about 15 years and up. When it comes to grooming these are fairly high maintenance dogs. This dog should be groomed frequently and bathed about every month. Professional groom should be administered around every four weeks. This dog sheds little to non and is good for a people with allergy's.
This dog does have some health problems to worry about: some are prone to watery eyes, cataracts, skin and ear ailments, dislocated kneecaps and epilepsy. They may also be sensitive to flea bits.
Good with children but has many health problems. Overall a good well balanced dog by nature.
Newfoundland
The Nanny Dog
They have amazingly sweet temperaments, and are known as the 'Nanny Dog'. An overall calm dogs good with guests and obedient with its master.
Their giant body makes them move kinda slow. But if faced with the need they well be brave and protect your family from an intruder. When they catch the intruder they are most likely going to corner them or put themselves between you and your family and the unwelcome person. They are not likely to go on a full on attack.
This dog normally get along with other dogs and animals. You should however socialize well, correcting any aggressiveness that appears. This dog loves being outdoors and enjoys the loving comfort of being with their family.
The Newfoundland is a messy drinker and does drool (I have personal experience) but it doesn't drool as much as some of the big breeds. This dog breed also drinks a lot.
These dogs love water and love swimming, they will go lay in water if the can. This dog breed might be a little difficult to train.
The females weigh about 100 to 120 pounds and the males about 130 to 150, I told you they were big. A member of my family owns a Newfoundland and last time I saw her from ear to toe she came to my waist and at the time I was around 5 feet tall.
This dog can do OK in an apartment as long as they get enough exercise, this dog does not do well in heat and is better in colder climates. Make sure cool water is always available and a nice cool place for them to relax.
Even though this is a fairly lazy dog happy to relax around the house, it still needs to go on a daily walks make sure your leading these walks by make the dog walk next to or behind you. Newfoundland's love to play and jump around in the water, as well.
This dog can live 9-15 years although the average is 10.
Grooming this dog takes a little more work then some other breeds, bushing daily to weekly is important to this breeds long coat. Don't bathe unless its absolutely necessary because this will strip the coat the oils it needs, as an alternative dry shampoo now and then. This dog has two periods in which it sheds in the spring and fall, during these time it need a little more help. It sheds more in spring.
This dog does not have many health problems: they can be prone to a hereditary heart disease known as SAS or subaortic stenosis, and hip dysplasia. Be careful not to let this dog breed get fat.
The nanny dog, did you know that nana from Peter Pan was a Newfoundland? Interesting stuff...
MUST HAVE!
Hehe... Invisible dog leash, so evil.
Chinese Shar-Pei
If the Chinese Shar-Pei meets with kids, cats, and other animals while young the dog is going to be much more likely to get along with them. Usually after that, they don't have a problem with them. But you must introduce them consistently. These dogs make good watchdogs and need a fair amount on exercise. Fun loving but tend not to like the water and want to avoid it.
The Shar-Pei needs a strong confident leader, if you are meek or mild this dog will take over as boss, that can cause behavior issues. But you have to be gentle but firm with this dog, that's very important. The Chinese Shar-Pei must be taught that all humans are above them in the pecking order.
This dog needs firm obedience training to help establish you as the leader. They may not take commands from other members of the family who have not established this.
This is a fairly clean dog, and will most likely be one of the easier breeds to housebreak.
This dog can weigh from 40 to 55 pounds.
The Shar-Pei can do ok in apartment life as long as it gets enough exercise. Its fairly active indoors and would do pretty good without a yard. This dog is sensitive to warm weather, because of the wrinkles on its head the tend to hold in heat, so on hot days make sure there is always shade for them. And water should be provided at all times. If they get enough exercise they should be pretty peaceful indoors.
This dog needs a considerable amount of exercise, daily walks are a good way to start. But if its a warm day don't over do it, that would be horrible for your dog.
The Shar-Pei can live up to about 10 year old.
This dog should be brushed regularly and their coat should never be trimmed. This breed does not have an undercoat. This dog sheds a tiny bit year round. This dog is not recommended for people with allergies.
This dog is prone to kidney failure, which causes a fever and swollen hocks syndrome. Shar-Pei's do have skin problems, although not because of their wrinkles. It is a hereditary condition, and can be helped if you find a good breeder, who is breeding for the dogs health.
This is a loving, loyal and cute dog. The Shar-Pei is a wrinkly piece of cuteness!
