Dog Car Sickness

Dog car sickness is certainly not fun. Our dogs ride so much with us in the car and, unfortunately, most of the time they are just not feeling very well. Dogs, like humans, get car sick. It's a fact, but it does not mean that they cannot comfortably ride in the car. There are tricks and remedies that will help.

One of my dogs could not go around the corner without getting sick. I tried all the tricks I could think of to alleviate the dog car sickness. I finally found a natural remedy that worked for him, and he's a happy passenger now. (And I'm happy, too!)

I figured there's gotta be someone else out there who has the same problem with their dogs. So I posted this lens in the hope that it also helps others. Please let me know if it helps you with your situation.dog car sickness

Symptoms of Dog Car Sickness

What to look for in your dog.

We all love to take our dogs in the car and go for rides, but it is certainly not fun when our dogs get car sick. It's not fun for us, and it's not fun for the dog. Fortunately, there is hope.

There is a really awesome natural remedy that can help alleviate the dog car sickness in your dog. There are also some tricks that you can try that may help.

First of all let's briefly discuss what the initial dog car sickness may look like while in the car:dog car sickness
  • Your dog may begin to salivate or drool excessively

  • Your dog may begin to "look" sick or lethargic

  • Your dog may suddenly begin to act differently

  • Your dog may start licking its lips excessively

  • Your dog may begin to shake or tremor

  • Your dog may begin to pant heavily

Be warned that some dogs exhibit absolutely no unusual behavior before getting sick. Just remember to keep the towels handy.

Causes of Dog Car Sickness

Anxiety? Or Motion Sickness?

Dog Car SicknessAssess whether or not your dog is truly motion sick or suffering from anxiety or stress. How many trips do you take with your dog? Do the trips all involve going to the Vet? Dogs (especially puppies) can associate riding in the car with going to the Vet or some other fearful location and become very anxious and sick. If this is the case, go on shorter trips with your dog to fun places like dog parks so that your dog can associate riding in the car with something fun. Give your dog lots of praises while riding in the car and talk to your dog frequently in a happy tone. Your dog will soon learn that car trips are not always associated with negative experiences and your dog car sickness may go away.

Rescue dogs are particularly prone to dog car sickness since they might have come from unpleasant circumstances.
.

Combine that with the fact that every time they are in the car, they are probably being shuffled around to temporary homes or to the Vet. For these dogs it is very important to teach them that car rides can be fun. It would be good for you to appear very happy and excited as you walk towards the car. Start with very short car trips and lots of praises and happy uplifting conversation. Give treats and lots of hugs after the car ride.

Tips and Tricks

Simple tips and tricks you can use to help with dog car sickness.

If the dog car sickness is truly related to motion, there are several tricks that you can try. First, remember that when we humans get car sick, we like the windows down and the air blowing all around. The same goes for your dog. Do not, however, allow your dog to stick its entire head all the way out of the window because when the car is in motion, small objects can fly at incredible speeds at your dog's head, possibly causing injury or even take out an eye.

Another thing to remember is to drive smoothly and avoid making sharp or hurried turns. Allow your dog to look out the window to watch the scenery go by. Sometimes the sights outside the window are enough to keep the dog distracted so they are not thinking about the nausea. Always remember to keep the seat covered with a towel "just in case" and bring along one or two extra towels.

Natural Remedies

Remedies to alleviate the dog car sickness.

If the dog car sickness does not go away, try this all-natural remedy that is very effective for motion sickness as well as calming distressed dogs. It's called Pet Alive and it comes in little pleasant-tasting granules. I keep mine in the glove box and just sprinkle about a pinch of it on my dog's tongue. It's that easy! It gets rapidly absorbed in the mouth, and you will notice a difference right away.

AIR TRAVEL: Dogs who travel by air will also greatly benefit with having a few of these granules sprinkled on their tongues prior to their flight. It would be wise to stock up now before the flight.

Dog Car Sickness Natural Remedy

Another all-natural product is Bach Rescue Remedy. It is not specifically designed for motion sickness, but it will calm your dog which should help an agitated dog with its dog car sickness. This is very good for rescue dogs. Order Your Bach Rescue Remedy Here.

Use this for Vet visits, stress caused by loud noises, excessive barking, after a shock, fright, or mistreatment, separation anxiety, or adapting to new surroundings.

Other Suggestions

Suggested remedies that may also work.

Someone suggested giving the dog bits of liver before a car trip to help alleviate the dog car sickness. I, however, always avoid giving my dogs anything to eat or drink at least an hour prior to our trip. Keep in mind that if they are going to get sick, they will get sick whether or not there is anything in their stomach. I find that not feeding them before a car trip definitely helps.

Other people have tried giving their dog Dramamine--the same drug humans take to ward off car sickness. Dramamine can also work for pets. This is not a natural remedy and dosage should be monitored. Medium to large dogs should be given 25 to 50 milligrams of Dramamine at least an hour before traveling. Cats and small dogs should get about 12.5 milligrams. Warning: Since Dramamine is not a natural remedy, please be sure to check with your Vet before giving this or any medicinal product to your pet. Repeated use is not recommended.

Don't Worry, Be Happy

Time for you and your dog to get out and enjoy!

If your dog is happy and very comfortable riding in the car and does not associate the car trip with going some place unpleasant or frightening, you should have no problem with dog car sickness. But if you, like me, have a dog that is prone to motion sickness, then you will need to get creative and find out what works best for your dog.

Hopefully, these remedies and tips worked well for you and your dog, and your dog car sickness is a thing of the past. It worked for me! So I'm just passing along a useful tip.

Mani is a cutie pie. Thanks for pointing out that dogs should not ride in the car with their heads out the window. It scares me to death when I see that. I enjoyed reading your lens which was loaded with good information. Thankfully my dogs do not get sick because they won't let you leave the house without them.

I LOVE rescue remedy. This applies to people as well. When my daughter was fussy and crying as an infant for over an hour on an airplane, the sweet lady in front of me asked if she could rub some rescue remedy on her feet. I was shocked when she settled down and went to sleep within 10 minutes! Great lens!!

What a CUTE pooch! Love the oversized ears! Anyhow, one thing that worked well for a dog we took care of (our own dog never has gotten car-sick) was peppermint. We'd give him a peppermint candy just before the ride, and he'd be fine. Well ... I still don't think he was thrilled to be in the car, but he never lost his cookies when he had peppermint beforehand.

What a cute little pup!!! I luckily do not have this problem with my dog. I did have it years ago when I was in college with my cats. I would bring them home with me from my apartment at school (an hour away.) I had all types of things I would need to do to keep them from getting sick. I looked pretty funny driving down the road with my three cats sitting in the back window! :-) 5*'s! BTW, I found you on tweetdeck doing a search for Squidoo.
